I call myself a follower of Christ. I was raised Lutheran, but don't believe every single thing they believe.
I also believe that if you find love in this world, in whatever way you do, then you're WAY ahead of the game.
In other words, not all people who believe in God, believe that love between people of the same sex is wrong.

Just an article that raises the question.

I don't know Tazzy, a conservative opinion piece pointing a finger at the USSR. Seems more like a smear piece than one which raises legitimate questions.

And why couldnt an atheist be homophobic?

I didn't say that we couldn't be, we're influenced by societal pressure like everyone else, what I said was that largely we aren't. You made a claim and I'm genuinely interested to see if you have any data to back it up because of how LGBT friendly the atheist/skeptic/free thinker community in general is.

Does that acceptance include the gays who are also religious? Or are they still idiots who believe in fairy tails?

I'm of the understanding that there is a spectrum of positions among Lutheranism and that even the bigoted end is at least Godhatesfags-lite. It's really great the Lutheranism has come so far in terms of rejecting Martin Luther's teachings.

Listen Steel, I really can't speak for Lutherans. It's how I was raised, but not exactly what I believe.
I haven't studied their ideas/beliefs enough to speculate on that.
What I can say is that there are people who are religious and/or followers of Christ (or another leader) who aren't prejudiced against same sex love. (or marriage)

Im sorry thats all you took from that piece. The point of the article was "dont ask, dont tell". That doesnt negate the ideas and facts he proposed.

Unless I am mistaken, the Soviet Union is one of the few to become a state atheistic society. The only point I am making is that atheism does not necessarily mean someone embraces the acceptance of homosexuality. Anymore than saying the acceptance of Christianity means someone has to denounce homosexuality.

Absolutely, there are also forms of Lutheranism with homosexual clergy.

Well it was atheist in the sense that the State took the place of God in it's crazy religion. But it's outlawing of other religions and belief systems had nothing to do with the sort of things that the atheist community is promoting.

It's like using the KKK as an example of Christianity, ie. good luck convincing the Christian that it's an applicable example.

However, my big issue with using the USSR instead of modern data is that a lot has changed. All sorts of misinformation about homosexuality has been debunked for instance it's no longer commonly considered a curable mental disease.

You keep trying to push this point, I never disagreed with you on it and I think I already mentioned that I agree with you on it.

You don't have to go farther than the atheist PR thread to find evidence that atheists are far more accepting of theists than debating them on the internet would lead you to believe.

"People are willing to hire an atheist for a job that is perceived as low trust, for instance as a waitress," said Gervais."But when hiring for a high-trust job like daycare worker, they were like, nope, not going to hire an atheist for that job."The antipathy does not seem to run both ways, though. Atheists are indifferent to religious belief when it comes to deciding who is trustworthy."Atheists don't necessarily favour other atheists over Christians or anyone else," he said. "They seem to think that religion is not an important signal for who you can trust."

http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2011/12/05/church-reverses-ban-on-interracial-marriages/
CNN)–Two weeks ago, Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church in Pike County, Kentucky, voted 9-6 to ban couples in interracial marriages from attending or participating in the church. But on Sunday, the small church reversed its course.
