Well.........fuckin happy worship Adolf Hitler dead and rotting ass day to you too, cupcake!!!!!

Would you care to explain what Adolf has to do with me? Even my parents weren't born during his life-time, and if I'm not wrong (in this part of the world we do have history) his birthday and or date of his demise aren't anywhere near this time of year. Personally I find Nazis a bit loathsome, so I won't see anymore of your posts, have a nice day, year, life, whatever, sunshine.

I honestly don't think that was directed at you. He just posted after you and the default on CM is (in reply to "username") How you react to it is your business but I think you took it out of context.

Don't take this as rude but.......If you were to polite to respond to her in the way you wanted to than why rant about it? If it had been me I would have more than likely said bright blessings, or blessed be(you know a lot of old religous people think you are being nice when you say that) You could have just said happy sunday or, in your case, happy thursday. Or you could have done the really polite thing of smile, nod, and repeat whatever they say back to them. After all humoring someone to avoid confict is most likely the oldest tradition out there. If someone responds badly that is on them, not you. You can always walk away.

*haveing said that* Bad fluffy bunny, being all non-hippie hug a tree and hold handsish, go stand in a corner for being just as intolerant as everyone else. Do it or I'll pull your hair and make you sing ave marie while slapping you in the cock and telling you how worthless you are(oh, hey, where did that religous humiliation thread go)

A rant is often used to relieve stress, I guess I could have just wanked but that's like taking a local anesthetic when you need to be knocked out... it helps, but the pain doesn't really go away.

I could have responded in kind to her, but I chose not to; I don't say "Merry Christmas" and haven't in years.  I seldom say "Blessed Be" unless I know or suspect I am dealing with someone on my level.

It's been years since I claimed to be a tolerant person without a caveat.  I am tolerant of you and yours until you get into my way.  I am all about me, except for when relating to specific people or in a few cases, specific subgroups of people.  Nor am I a nice man, being nice means you lie.  Being nice is when someone shows you a picture of the love of their life, who happens to be attempting a monopoly on the ugly stick market, you tell them how beautiful or handsome they are.  Instead I smile and hope they move on beyond that point of the conversation.  That's not to say that I am (always) deliberately mean or cruel, sometimes the kindest thing to do is to keep my mouth shut; and I recognize that.

But, I come here to an open forum in order to let off a little steam because even though I can show restraint and even a certain level of kindness, she fucking pissed me off; and I needed to vent.  I did it here, because I knew it had a chance of sparking a colorful and intelligent conversation.  So I think my ranting has had a constructive result, I felt better and apparently many of you do too.

LL - all holidays are "made up." There's no deep biological reason for any of them. It sounds like your issue with Kwanza is because an activist made it up - but religions are forms of activism, too. I don't celebrate Kwannza (and think it's funny when someone looks at me and assumes I do haha) but some people do and it's meaningful to them. Being dismissive of that isnn't called for, IMO.

Well, certainly not "biological" reasons, but there are deep historical reasons for the others.  They are a celebration of a particular historical event for that particular faith.  That is true for Winter Solstice (although slightly different because it is a celebration of something that continues to occur every year), Christmas, Hanukka and Ramadan.

It isn't simply that Kwaanza was thought up by an activist, but the fact that it was thought up for the specific purpose of attempting to get black people to abandon whatever religious practices they had.  In the end, it didn't work and many people have "adjusted" the meaning of Kwaanza from what the activist first thought.

The same thing with Festivus.  There is no history, it is something that was brought to the puplic eye as an event that would bring laughs on a sitcom.

Yes, I have more respect for holidays that are deeply rooted in history with deep, reverent meaning.  Kwaanza has now been around for what?  Coming up on fifty years.  It still hasn't "taken off" and I don't believe it ever will.  It intentionally attempts to separate people, and that is not a good thing, regardless of wanting to be true to your culture.  Same thing with Festivus.  People have heard of it for less than twenty years.  It has no historical roots other than television.

I don't run around telling people they shouldn't celebrate these events, that's their business to do so.  Do you realize the number of people who actually believe that Kwaanza is an African celebration, not and African American celebration?  If you don't know the history of the holiday you are celebrating, well, really, you are just following for the sake of following.

Festivus is the same thing.  It is based on being utterly politically correct and not offending anyone.

I respect the OP's celebration, and I do wish that he has a wonderful Winter Solstice.  But if I know more about the "holiday" someone is celebrating than they do?  Not so much.

Isn't it Kwanzaa?  Prolly why you don't celebrate it.  Kwanza and/or Kwannza are not on any calendar, and that may be what is leading people to look at you out of the side of their faces, the spelling.......... n'est ces pas?

Or it could be that Christianity is already well represented everywhere else this time of year, and they were trying to present a different point of view to their students. That's part of education.
In any case, blowing up at someone ( in the OP's case) or posting nasty things on my Facebook wall about non Christians ruining "their" holiday ( which is what happened to me) is hardly likely to win converts. I don't believe in Christian myths and I am not going to pretend like I do. How is saying " Happy Holidays" an assault on anyone's religion?
In fact, with everything going on in the world today, I wonder how simple minded some people must be if this is the kind of shit that they worry about.

If an educational institution is going to teach children about religions, it has to include ALL religions, regardless of whether or not Christmas appears to be everywhere.  There is no getting around the fact that it was intentionally left out.  Children can't learn to accept differences when one thing is omitted for whatever reason.

The people who posted on Facebook did not specifically post to your wall.  You had them listed as friends and when they posted to their own wall, it showed up on yours.  It is a subtle difference.  It still doesn't make it right, and I delete those kinds of posts if they show up on my wall.  I do believe in those "myths," but I honestly don't care for people ranting like that about it.  Honestly though, it is not all that much different from you calling those beliefs "myths" when it comes to being insulting.  You want people to respect your beliefs, you might try offering a little respect in return.

I tend to ignore it, mostly, but I do enjoy the Yule concept. You should just start wishing people a happy yule-tide. Most will assume you mean christmas anyway since the Catholics co-opted yule so long ago, and you can inwardly smirk at them, which is the second best kind of smirking all things considered.

You misunderstand.  I don't really care whether people "respect" my beliefs or not. I am not demanding people NOT say "merry christmas" to me, or that all religious displays be removed because they might offend me.   Nor am I seeking converts to my way of thinking.  I don't go door to door handing out pamphlets about atheism, for example.  My response to one of the offending facebook posts was one of the rare times that I have publicly announced that I even am an atheist.  By the way, it shows up on my wall, it was intended to show up on my wall, how is it not a wall posting?  I posted on another thread about mentioning my dad was an atheist in a facebook post about planning his funeral, and getting a response from some chick that "he wasn't an atheist now that he had met jesus".  I didn't feel the need to tell her what a tasteless, bullshit thing that was to say, even though it was.  As I recall, I responded rather politely by sending her the beautiful eulogy we read at his funeral.
In any case, I am not necessarily asking for respect for my beliefs, I just wish people would shut the fuck up about theirs.  I am certainly happy to do the same.  Like I said, I am not seeking converts and I don't feel the need to proselytize.  Regardless of your personal beliefs, I find Christian myths (or deeply held beliefs, depending on your point of view) no more credible than tales of Zeus, Hera and Mars.  I don't believe them at all and I want to hear about them even less.
You are probably right about the holiday program blushes, or whoever it was,  was talking about.  Excluding Christianity, while including other religions' myths, was probably not well balanced, if nothing else.  It isn't like Christianity is something to be frightened of.

I say Merry Christmas because I live in a very small town.  Goddess forbid if I want to celebrate by going to see my pagan friends, jump naked into the hot tub with a cup of mulled mead and enjoy the energy and power being raised.

I do send off Christmas cards because Walmart does not carry the Solstice ones.  Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings yes, they carry them.

Rant over...got a winecooler calling my name.
