And this is (partially) why there is an obesity epidemic. The idea of challenging one person to eat more food than the 7 of you could consume appalls me.

"The Comfy Cow Sundae contains fifteen scoops of ice-cream – that’s over 5 ½ lbs!"

3 1/2 lbs is the new 5 1/2 lbs.....no big.

Now...THIS is where life gets good!:  http://foodinsurance.com/store/a-la-carte-food/ice-cream-sandwich.html?SID=98c8c98a56202bc807d67d1f9dc93ca6

I love my ice cream, don't get me wrong, but I limit myself to a certain bowl size.

The problem with that theory is....to date, I've yet to find a manufacturer that sells ice cream in (for me) that large of a size.

I do think eating contests (other than the pie eating at the fair type) are a horrible misuse of food, but how fun for a birthday!!

Was it good ice cream?

(There's bad ice cream?)

I'm sorry you were appalled kalikshama. This is something my daughter has wanted to do (and planned for) as a birthday celebration for over a year. It was a fun happy time. They were kids having fun and something they will remember and talk about for a long time. A ONCE IN A LIFETIME birthday celebration is very far from what is causing obesity in this country. I guarantee that. You've already railed against holiday goodies (both getting and giving) so I know how you feel about these types of things. I don't feel the same. You'd be really appalled at the yummy gifts I make (and send out as gifts) every year around this time. Luckily, we don't all have to agree.

I think you misunderstood me - or perhaps I misunderstood you. I thought the 7 of you tried (and failed) to eat one that you shared. I don't see anything wrong with that.

I think you've also confused me with someone else - or perhaps you can point me towards my posts "railing" against holiday goodies. I do recall making one about rampant consumerism - totally different than the homemade goodies I do intend to make and receive with pleasure.

I did condemn using pepper spray against fellow Black Friday shoppers.

NOW everything makes soooooo much more sense to me!!!!!!

I always try to shop midweek (largely because I have fewer meetings then), but occasionally I've shopped on Fridays (some Saturdays....they never seemed quite as full as compared to Fridays...now I know why).

Sooo....black people shop on Fridays.

I get it now....that's why it's always so damned busy.

(GAWDDD I'm glad I stop in here occasionally).

Kalika, that isnt causing the obesity problem... the inability to stop eating is. A business offering a massive size desert is not the problem... nor is it designed to have people come back week after week after week to try again

I put the "partially" disclaimer in for you Taz :)

Before I get off on a Super Size Me tangent I want to agree with Lilly:

You have poor, inner-city people who can buy an automatic firearm with more ease than a tomato, who basically exist on highly processed foods.

I live near Brockton, MA, where many people don't have cars or supermarkets within walking distance, but they can walk to pizza or McDonalds or convenience store hot dogs [:'(]

I've known about this intellectually, but it's different actually witnessing it.

The really ironic thing is that the towns outside Brockton are filled with farmers and farmstands - but all their customers drive.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 5:21:28 PM)

There is indeed bad ice cream!! And I refuse to feed my plushness with it!

There used to be an ice cream place called Farrell's that has this big sundae called "the trough", with eight scoops of ice cream, etc. Some of the boys could actually eat it all!

Yep! There was a Farrel's out here in (East Brunswick) New Jersey, when I first moved out (1979). My New Jersey friends would tell me about it and we went there a few times but I had learned my lesson about challenges.

I don't know if it was a sales pitch but, when I mentioned to one of the waitresses about Jahn's, she told me that Farrel's used Jahn's ice cream. I never did find out if it was true or not but the ice cream was delicious in both places.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Definitely. I've never had good ice cream at a sushi buffet. (R always got some and at new places I would have a bite to confirm the low quality.)

I think Häagen-Daz and Ben & Jerry's have the right idea about ice cream - full fat/full sugar. I bought some Friendlys ice cream recently because they declared bankruptcy, and the seasonal-only peppermint stick was on sale. I didn't like it nearly as much. It has less than half the fat.

We didn't plan ahead at Thanksgiving and the selection at the convenience store was limited so we ended up with Hoods.

Häagen-DazVanilla Bean Ingredients: CREAM, SKIM MILK, SUGAR, EGG YOLKS, NATURAL FLAVOR, GROUND VANILLA BEANS.

Hood Golden Vanilla Ingredients: MILKFAT AND NONFAT MILK, BUTTERMILK, SUGAR, CORN SYRUP, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, WHEY, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, MONO & DIGLYCERIDES, GUAR GUM, LOCUST BEAN GUM, POLYSORBATE 80, CARRAGEENAN AND ANNATTO (FOR COLOR).

I'm not anti ice-cream - I'm pro quality ingredients and portion control.

ShaharThorne -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 5:35:26 PM)

Haagen Daas is ebil...so is Blue Bell.  All of that creaminess...

One note...WTH does McDonalds put whipped cream and a cherry on their milkshakes now?  Trying to make it look like a latte or something?

I'm not 100% sure but I think it's because the Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins outlets started doing it and Burger King started doing it and ...

I recently went into a Burger King to get a couple of chicken sandwiches and I figured: what the hell, I'll have a chocolate shake. The young lady asked me if I wanted whipped cream and a cherry and I swear, it took me a full 5 seconds to process the information. They're also using newly designed tops with giant holes in them.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

This place is the epitome of ice cream. It's like Hagendaz (I know the spelling is wrong) when it first started out. This place is incredible.

xxblushesxx -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 5:51:14 PM)

Unfortunately we didn't save it because it kind of all melted together and really it was just for the *wow* factor, and not for the let's see how much we can possibly eat factor. *g*

Years ago, when I lived in New York, there was an Ice Cream shoppe called "Jahn's" (Maybe 2 "H"s?). They had something called "The Kitchen Sink (corrected)" which was something like 5 pints (?) of ice cream. It was huge and the rules were only one person could take the challenge. When I was younger (12 years old), my guardians would always tease me about trying to finish one.

The deal was: if you finished one, you got another one, free (had to be consumed at that time. It could not be taken home in a "doggie bag"). I think the thing cost $9.99 in 1976 dollars (That's when I was 12). Even then, I couldn't understand the point but, the feeling of a challenge over-came me and I did it on my birthday. I was sick as a dog for a couple of days, afterwards.

About 2 years ago, my youngest son (then 21) was living with me. A new ice cream parlor opened up, nearby and they had a similar challenge. The only differences were you could have up to three people, helping you eat 2 gallons of ice cream and you had to accomplish it in less than an hour.

My son, the twisted little masochist that he is, kept insisting that he wanted to try it and that I should help him. I related my "Jahn's story" to him but he was unmoved.

Finally, for his birthday, I figured: what the hell! I approached it from a different point of view and did not eat enough to make myself sick but my son was not quite as lucky. We didn't complete the challenge. We needed one more person and we would have done it.

Was it fun? Sure! Would I do it, again? I guess I could be convinced in a similar manner to how my son convinced me (which is why my grandson and I have never driven by the place).

Peace and comfort,

Michael

OMG! YOU SO ROCK! HM's mom, (he and they are from New York) talked about this just yesterday when I told her about this. Thank you for mentioning it. : )

tazzygirl -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 6:00:12 PM)

This one is huge too...

[image]http://www.ibetyouwont.com/images/california/thekitchensinkchallenge.jpg[/image]

Here is the challenge that was featured on last nights episode of Man v. Food, The Kitchen Sink! Adam demolished this huge tub of ice cream to become the 5th person to ever do so alone. Normally made for up to 6 people, the kitchen sink is about 2 gallons worth of ice cream plus toppings. This is definitely not for the lactose intolerant (or the faint of heart).

xxblushesxx -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 6:20:12 PM)

Is two gallons more or less than five pounds? I guess it may depend on how much air is in the ice cream. At comfy cow, there is not much air at all. It is "premium" ice cream, which means it's full of fat and fun!

tazzygirl -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 6:22:08 PM)

If we get there, you can lead the way. [:D]

xxblushesxx -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 6:25:03 PM)

Kalik, I apologize, I had you confused with another poster.
I'm still not happy that you compared the fun day we had with people who fill their children with fat every day, but I did think you were someone else.

kalikshama -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 6:34:07 PM)

Apology accepted and I am sorry I wasn't clear and feel like I'm continuing to fail to convey what I meant - was not meant as an attack on your group - will try again tomorrow.

According to MY scale (the morning after) two gallons is easily 5 lbs.
