Kalik, I apologize, I had you confused with another poster.
I'm still not happy that you compared the fun day we had with people who fill their children with fat every day, but I did think you were someone else.

There is indeed bad ice cream!! And I refuse to feed my plushness with it!

There used to be an ice cream place called Farrell's that has this big sundae called "the trough", with eight scoops of ice cream, etc. Some of the boys could actually eat it all!

I'm so glad you mentioned that, that was in the 70s, long before the obesity "epidemic"...it was really just part of being a kid. No reason to read anything more into it. And such a fun place.

Kalika, that isnt causing the obesity problem... the inability to stop eating is.

I'm kind of surprised you'd say that.  I believe research is showing that it has much more to do with high fructose corn syrup.  While I'm sure there are some people who simply over eat to the point of obesity, it seems that what people are eating has more of an impact.

Haagen Daas is ebil...so is Blue Bell.  All of that creaminess...

One note...WTH does McDonalds put whipped cream and a cherry on their milkshakes now?  Trying to make it look like a latte or something?

I needed to get some brew and some hard cider last night, and there's a Kroger right there, and they had BLue Bell 2/$7.00 so I bought 4 - 3 Spiced Pumpkin/Pecan and 1 No sugar vanilla. I had some of the Pumpkin for breakfast. Good stuff.

We had obesity before HFCS, Treasure. When research comes up with a definitive cause, then others can point fingers.

I see... so in the meantime you'll simply ignore the research and blame obese people for just being pigs.   [8|]

What on earth does that have to do with it?  [&:]  Aren't you able to just admit that you made a dubious statement?

When I make a dumbass statement, I will admit to it, Treasure.

Years ago, when I lived in New York, there was an Ice Cream shoppe called "Jahn's" (Maybe 2 "H"s?). They had something called "The Kitchen Sink (corrected)" which was something like 5 pints (?) of ice cream. It was huge and the rules were only one person could take the challenge. When I was younger (12 years old), my guardians would always tease me about trying to finish one.

The deal was: if you finished one, you got another one, free (had to be consumed at that time. It could not be taken home in a "doggie bag"). I think the thing cost $9.99 in 1976 dollars (That's when I was 12). Even then, I couldn't understand the point but, the feeling of a challenge over-came me and I did it on my birthday. I was sick as a dog for a couple of days, afterwards.

About 2 years ago, my youngest son (then 21) was living with me. A new ice cream parlor opened up, nearby and they had a similar challenge. The only differences were you could have up to three people, helping you eat 2 gallons of ice cream and you had to accomplish it in less than an hour.

My son, the twisted little masochist that he is, kept insisting that he wanted to try it and that I should help him. I related my "Jahn's story" to him but he was unmoved.

Finally, for his birthday, I figured: what the hell! I approached it from a different point of view and did not eat enough to make myself sick but my son was not quite as lucky. We didn't complete the challenge. We needed one more person and we would have done it.

Was it fun? Sure! Would I do it, again? I guess I could be convinced in a similar manner to how my son convinced me (which is why my grandson and I have never driven by the place).

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Ahhh, memories. Jahn's in Teaneck NJ was the only place to be for the cast/crew after a HS play or choral concert. That locations version of the Kitchen Sink was a huge banana split iirc. There was only one guy I saw eat the whole thing and 1/2 of the free one...a football player appropriately named Joe Taste.

I think most of it is due to the sedentary lifestyle that has spread from the executive suite to Main Street, and starts so young now. In the suburbs it is much more unusual to see pick up games in whatever sport than it used to be. Parks used to be full, with people waiting for a field/court. Now they are nearly empty.

DesFIP -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 8:10:01 PM)

I grew up with a Jahn's about a half mile away in Queens. Thanks for the memory.

There's a diner in Hyde Park called the Ever Ready where we go occasionally if around there. Took my teen a few years ago when he was about 15 and he ordered a brownie sundae. Bear in mind that this is an adolescent who eats everything and while doing sports, was hungry every two hours. It was so huge, after his burger, that he could only eat less than half. The Man and I then ate some of it and there was still nearly half left over. Probably the only time this child didn't eat all of dessert. He's about 5'11 1/2" and maybe 150 pounds.

DaddySatyr -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 8:12:53 PM)

I believe the one in Queens (I think it was Ozone Park {No. It's in Jackson Heights 81–04 37th Avenue} but I could double check) is the only Jahn's still in operation.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

P.S.; How do people do the text with the line through it thingy?

DesFIP -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 8:18:52 PM)

This was out in Bayside and it closed years ago.
The best ice cream around here is Jane's Ice Cream. The little cafe that had every single flavor was a luncheonette in Kingston NY run by Jane's sister Amy and her husband. Unfortunately they closed a while back. But various places carry some of the flavors.

DaddySatyr -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 8:22:42 PM)

If Jackson Heights wasn't a freakin' war zone, I might be tempted to head out there for some ice cream.

DesFIP -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 8:35:13 PM)

Too true. But it wouldn't be the same.

Like going to City Island for a lobster. Something we did all the time when I was a kid, today it just wouldn't be as great.

DaddySatyr -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 8:37:23 PM)

You're probably right although, if it's still owned by one of the founder's children ...

A friend of mine who is slim and (get this bit) stops eating when she is no longer hungry went to america a few years ago. When she only ate less than half the massive portion served to her a couple of waitresses were actually angry that she had left so much food. Most of them were confused and wouldn't accept that there was nothing wrong with the food, and one even got the chef out to apologise! Unbelievable

Bullshit. Waitresses here dont care why you didnt finish everything. We box it up and send it home.

Absolutely.
I'm European, I eat only half portions at restaurants, and I've never heard anybody complain about it.
Hell my husband usually doesn't even finish his meal (he's American) and nobody says anything about that either.

What they WILL do is ask if you enjoyed and bring a box to take the leftovers home with you.

tazzygirl -> RE: We Took The Comfy Cow Challenge (12/11/2011 9:09:15 PM)

I probably should have said waitresses dont care unless the customer has a complaint. [:)] I have been known to wrap up edamame and give a lesson to a table about how to heat them back up.
