I've no choice but to completely disagree with your entire gender discriminatory premise. It's not just males, it's females, too. Plenty of 30 something females take their laundry home to ma.

I too disagree; I have three sons, a daughter and an ugly little redheaded step dog that wondered into the yard about eight years ago. My home is never in disarray nor was it when my children were growing up. My wife was killed while my son’s all three were still in diapers and my daughter not long out of them. What I didn’t know about housekeeping, cooking laundry and ironing I soon learned. Sure I had help, I had a live in but my children were taught to live as a family, each doing their part and that included fending for themselves on many occasions.

When my daughter was in med school she was discussing families with two of her roommate’s, my daughter said my father is so ugly he’s ruggedly handsome but he can cook like a French Chief and my brothers are better cooks then he is. Her roommate told me that story during a Christmas holiday they spent at my home and I chuckled to myself thinking of all the time my daughter and I spent together in the kitchen.

I saw this in an article about Berlusconi in the New Yorker, which I can't copy, so here's a Newsweek link:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2011/04/17/we-are-treated-like-prosciutto.html

Other statistics reveal 95 percent of Italian men have never used a washing machine, and that Italian women spend 21 hours a week on housework while Italian men spend only four.

The worls is full of spoiled brats. ....male ad female. They live all over the world. I just do my best to avoid them.

Yepper!! And many younger Italians are NOT getting married because the women don't want to be washerwomen! Seriously--they are not interested in taking care of men who are fucking clueless at doing any damn thing around the house. Grown men take their stuff to their moms! Appliances like we have here in the states are not super common either, laundry has to be hung to dry. And remember IRONING? They still do it in Italy!

Hib, Dago.

Is that because Italiam men are better orginized and get done in four hours what it takes Italiam women twnety one hours to do? I know something about Italian men, been one for a very long time.

Then you understand that they need to take long afternoon naps while the women prep the dinner, eh?

DesFIP -> RE: do american men have a hard time growing up? (12/19/2011 3:17:07 PM)

It's the lack of positive male role models.

I have to admit, my son sees no reason to move out yet. He's going to community college and yes, I still do his wash. I'm doing it now to be honest. On the other hand, he's the first to be there for any physical labor whether it's log splitting or driveway repair.

LaT, how can the grand girls be a pain? You have horses, girls and horses are a perfect match. Set them to grooming and stall cleaning in exchange for riding.

I think they're too dinky yet, Des!

Awareness -> RE: do american men have a hard time growing up? (12/19/2011 9:05:49 PM)

  Some are, yes.

There's a couple of things I pin it on.  One is the absence of male role models and far too many dudes growing up without a father.  You can be the greatest single mother in the world but you haven't a snowflake's chance in hell of teaching your son to be a man.

The second is the absence in our society of rites of manhood.  In most tribal societies there was a social gathering of men in which a boy had the clear cut expectation put upon him that he was now a man.  Sometimes this involved suffering, a test of will or some other feat.  This is important because as a child you're often protected from the world by your parents - as a man you have to accept that life contains pain and you must be prepared to master it.

An example of this approach is here:  http://bit.ly/15nQls

This is the Satere Mawe tribe of the Amazon.  This rite involves young men wearing gloves laced with a hundred or so angry bullet ants which secrete an incredibly painful neurotoxin.  To be considered a man, the initiate must wear the gloves for 10 minutes.  After removing them, the pain only increases and it takes 24 hours for the neurotoxin to dissipate.

There's just one catch.  They have to do it 20 times.

Many men in Western societies are soft, indecisive and unfit to lead.  This is why so many women complain about them.  There's a lack of personal ethics, standards and goals which make them a pale shadow of their forebears.  Not everyone has the desire to be a captain of industry, but every man can have a code of ethics, some goals in his life and the stones to accept personal responsibility for outcomes.

These milksops you describe have none of these.

Cool. Then you agree with me that those who have made the wrong carreer choices should be left out on the ice. Nobody deserves any compassion. Fukum all. Any muthafucker ain't got the bread is dead. Like a poker game.

Y'know a poker game is dog eat dog, no question. You know that going in and you could get killed. But normal people in normal life are a different story.

Hmmm, I was going to say that you don't take the kids to the poker game but I know people who have, and they never got killed, or their kids either. Actually usually there is no trouble. It's just that when there is there are bags of bodies coming out. But that was then. We are not as serious anymore.

Shoot the horse, shoot the dog. When the time comes it is the humane thing to do, so have the kid do it. That's right.

Kill a critter by eight or it's too late.

are we a generation of man-children?

a close female friend of mine recently expressed her concern about the state of american males and their unwillingness to grow up. specifically, she launched into a long, expletive saturated tirade (filled with so many profanities that it began to sound like richard nixon gettingn blueballed on prom night) the gist of which was: too many dudes in their 30s still refuse to grow up and most of these guys pretty much want a mother more than a girlfriend. now this is a complaint i hear frequently from women i'm close to and i'd like to hear some feedback on it from internet strangers.

when it comes to kinky people, does this vary from doms to subs do you think? like, how common is it for sub dudes to basically be looking for momdage (TM)? have sub women also run into dom type dudes who also basically just want a mommy, or who refuse to grow up?

in the interest of full disclosure, i should note that i personally exhibit some man-childish tendencies: i belong to a basketball and indoor soccer league, i spend too much money on shoes, i still play video games, i'm reluctant to make relationship commitments, etc. in other ways, i grew up pretty young and i tend to work long hours, be extremely loyal, cook well, clean up after myself, know how to use a semicolon, say what's on my mind, etc. my best guess is that most guys are like me, and that the "man-childish" aspect gets played up when things in a relationship start to go sour and resentment is naturally high; but i am interested in knowing how others view the American Male in the 21st Century!

I personally plan on never growing up.

Where's the fun in that?

I think men on the whole, mature more slowly than women. I also think that a large percentage of men, do a really shitty job of teaching their sons how to be honourable responsible men. Especially the fathers that are divorced from the child's mother.

That depends on what you mean by maturity.

I have yet to be with a woman who is able to support herself.

Maybe I just have bad taste in women.

I would say that must be more about your choice of women. Just checked your profile. Is that typical of Cleveland, Ohio? Is that a lower socio-economic area with  less job opportunities? (I have no idea never having been to the US)

I believe it may have been your taste in women.

Somehow, 20+ years ago, I managed to support not only myself, but two small children. I didn't even have a legitimate high school degree. I just had to work. Granted, I will admit that I paid my mother and younger siblings to babysit and they cost me less than a day care. But I still paid them to do it.
