The real problem is less a lack of independents in Congress and more a lack of any real difference between the two parties in question.

It seems to me that the amounts of money needed to enter politics and/or win elections is an additional concern. It means there is an over-representation of the wealthy in Congress, and the people who really need representation the most are effectively excluded.

For instance, I've seen estimates that Obama is going to raise and spend over a billion $ on his re-election campaign.
