Remember that old chestnut: You have to learn how to abide the rules before you can break them?

It still serves.

JMO, YMMV

I'm with you.  Furthermore, these rules scream conform, conform, conform shut up, and never try to change anything.  Nothing can be further from Bill G's philosophy of life.  Not to mention the "rules" are an insult to the intelligence of my kids, and certainly many others.

hmmmm.. I didnt read it as conform, conform, conform.. i read it as work hard/smart to get ahead.. that doesnt mean they need to flip burgers, they can do what these kids did..

Interesting that none of the following words (or concepts) were visible to me in the 11 rules*:
kind(ness), honest(y), compassion, sharing, ideal(ism), love, help(ing others), respect, happy(-ness), enlightenment, understand(ing), tolerant(-ce), equal(-ity), liberty, democracy, ..... need I go on?

I'd hate for any child of mine to graduate from any school without any awareness of any of these qualities and/or concepts.

Instead we have a narrow range of narrow-minded conservative economic 'home truths' and conservative 'common sense' myths ie self-serving drivel.

From this I could conclude that the OP is all about turning children into ruthless economic automatons without any of the qualities that might make them recognisably human or (Heaven forbid! Shock! Horror!) humane. Arguably a form of child abuse.

People who think like this shouldn't be allowed within a million miles of children IMHO.

Since the list came from a book about why kids cant read, write or add, those things you complain that you dont see included in the short list are, imo, things parents should be teaching their kids, before they even go to school. Those things are not going to be something that comes from a friggin book.. imo..

popeye1250 -> RE: 11 rules your Kids did not learn in school (12/22/2011 12:58:24 AM)

Kids (are) pussys these days, Mark Twain (Samuel Clements) said he went to his first hanging before he was 12 years oldImagine if that happened today? The kids would be "traumatized" and the wimpy parents would be outraged. "Booo hoo, hoo, hoo!"
That's why they have their kids play,....."soccer" instead of football. Fuckin wimps.
And Merry Christmas, except to muslims.

Sorry, counterproductive.

You mentioned read in that post as well. This brings up one of my pet jokes, in fact an entire - well whatever......

Like you got a book on how to read. This is like the cable channel that tells you how to hook up your cable or dish, the videotape on how to hook up your VCR slash DVD on how to hook up the DVD player. It all ranks right up there with the instructions on the moon, about how to get to the moon.

T^T

Did you ever notice how none of Ayn Rand's characters have children?

That's because the moment someone who is all "We EARN IT OURSELVES" has kids, they become hypocrites as they support their entitled children who didn't EARN IT THEMSELVES.

You want to point out this hypocrisy? Ask a teabagger how they can support passing on assets via inheritance to someone who DIDN'T EARN IT THEMSELVES. If Paris Hilton is so smart, let her earn her own fortune.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: 11 rules your Kids did not learn in school (12/22/2011 6:02:19 AM)

It's not just the rules themselves, it is the condescending manner in which they were presented. Bill G was supposed to have said all this at a commencement. If I was at a graduation and someone started spouting this shit, I would walk out.

In terms of things that celebrities did not really say at graduations, I much prefer this "Wear Sunscreen" speech that was false attributed to Kurt Vonnegut. Here you go: http://www.wesselenyi.com/speech.htm

Inherited from whom and how much?

I didn't see anyone say that those were the only rules. Personally we didn't have any problems teaching our kids about both.

His dad, the rather wealthy lawyer. I think he underwrote Microsoft to a slight extent early on, and he certainly paid for the legal degree Gates dropped out of to start the company.
I'm dubious that Gates ever flipped burgers either, come to that...

That would be William Henry Gates II, and as far as how much? I dunno. K&L Gates doesn't publish revenue numbers, but they have 40 offices worldwide and 1900 attorneys, so it must be a pretty significant number...

Now, MSFT has made money, no doubt, but there wouldn't be a MSFT without Dad's Money and Dad's Connections...

Particularly since good old dad had to sue his dead dads estate (the guys who made it) get it as the guy who made it didnt want his son to have any of it cuz he thought his son was a dipshit.

So they've a long history of not earning it, and it may be that is why Ayn Rand isn't a good fit for them, and realistically not a good fit for anyone I can think of thats wealthy, cuz that aint how any of them got it.

Moonhead -> RE: 11 rules your Kids did not learn in school (12/22/2011 8:55:04 AM)

Well, Ayn probably had a bee in her bonnet about that as she didn't inherit because the commies chased her dad out of Russia and told him he couldn't own any serfs any more...

tazzygirl -> RE: 11 rules your Kids did not learn in school (12/22/2011 8:57:07 AM)

Ah, Ayn is just full our sour grapes... makes sense.

Yep.

mnottertail -> RE: 11 rules your Kids did not learn in school (12/22/2011 8:58:42 AM)

Fuckin government interventions, we had something like that one this side of the pond, the upshot of it was massive government on behalf of corporations, eventually leading to the slow undoing of american society at large, as these corporations took and took and took and took and were repeatedly appeased by people incapable of reading a newspaper, let alone governing a country.

Moonhead -> RE: 11 rules your Kids did not learn in school (12/22/2011 9:00:11 AM)

This was one of those commie federalist Democrat governments doing that, Ron?

mnottertail -> RE: 11 rules your Kids did not learn in school (12/22/2011 9:03:42 AM)

Well, no actually, it was a conglomeration of failed parties, Whigs, mud-sillers, nativists, knownothings, and they eventually became the republican party.....

As I have said before, all this talk of unfettered lassize faire Ayn Rand capitalism and a hands off government..........Lincoln and the republicans would not recognize their own party.
