You prep it, I'll cook it!

When I was in the boonies of Costa Rica, sometimes the bi-weekly grocery truck would not show up and I'd have to forage to gather lunch ingredients. Green papaya salad, anyone?

You're on! Wait, I love cooking. Can't I help you with that too?

Ooooh, one of my fortes is identifying, harvesting, and preparing wild plants for food and medicine. Can I come on your foraging forays and ride shotgun?

Most of what I know about medicinal plants I learned from the Clan of the Cave Bear series, so I don't know how practical that is

Mmmmm...can't say I know anthing about the series to which you refer. All my stuff is self taught, the old fashioned way, by hauling the butt out to fields, forests, glens, swamps, etc., learning to I.D. stuff, then taking it home for cleaning, drying, tincturing, preparation, cooking, storing, etc. Real basic footwork...nothing too romantic.

I've played around with wild mushrooms, for food, and that's a lot of fun. Much yummy stuff there!

What kind of plant stuff have you learned from that series? How about a couple of examples?

From her list, plants I can both identify and use are are willow, yarrow, and marigold.

I know medicinal uses of others but am not confident of my ability to identify them in the wild.

I can identify foxglove and know it's used for the heart, but wouldn't.

I can identify others but don't have the uses memorized, like horsetail fern for lice.

Ah Kali, those you mentioned, plus the ones on the url, are ALL my good friends, and I know them well. The only two I have not personally used, herbally/medicinally, is the foxglove (Digitalis; tho' I do have the homeopathic remedy), and the Ceanothus (aka Red root).

Just saying... some of us don't appreciate attaching pics of bloody butchering to a thread, particularly at random. I've seen enough blood and guts not to desire any reminders about it at any point in my life if I can avoid it. Takes the 'civil' out of me real good for days at a time. So, like the pictures themselves, I won't be seeing any reply you make on account of the "hide" function, a rather unique distinction.

Some people will squick at a roman shower, some at butchered animals, some at maggot-eaten babies, and some at roasted cuntlets.

It's a good idea to put potentially squicky images of any sort on image shack or the like, and link to them, rather than reinforce the perception that it was a good idea the way the board used to be (i.e. disallowing inline images entirely). The change hasn't added much so far, and this is the third time it's had me reevaluating my participation on the board, with the conclusion remaining that a handful of posters still make it worthwhile to stay, though huge chunks of the payoff are eaten up by events like this one.

Thank you for your honesty, and please forgive my thoughtlessness, as it was never my intent to be insensitive to, disturb or offend anyone. I see I am at great fault for forgetting others are not as comfortable with such things as I am. I truly regret the negative effect those pics have had on you, or anyone else, have posted the Moderator requesting they be removed, and offer you all my sincerest apologies.

You have suggested something about using image shack, or linking to them, but I do not know how. Would you, or someone else, be good enough to advise me how to do that?

Pictures didn't bother me although I agree hiding questionable stuff is the civil thing to do.

There's many sites that will host images for free; googling image upload will bring up many (I use imageshack personally). You simply go to them and click the buttons to upload and they'll give you a link to your image. Some of them require a free account be set up first.

I have no intention of having kids, and I have rarely ever even considered it an option in the past. So I wouldn't do anything different from what I'm already doing.

I see where you are coming from, and scrolled past the images quickly myself, and am glad they were removed, but -

The bloodless, skinless, Styrofoam backed and cellophane wrapped meat in a grocery store reduces an animal's sacrifice to a neat chunk of protein, robbing the eater of a connection to the animal and the land (or feedlot) on which it was raised. This disconnect encourages wastefulness and unhealthy overconsumption of meat.

Diverse agroecosystems, which have reintroduced animals in balance with crops are the best models for young farmers to emulate, but managing these systems requires a knowledge of animal husbandry.

And to bring this back to the OP - animal husbandry is an essential post-apocalyptical skill.

Yeah, they forget to tellyas a few things. One member started it because they said instead of drilling into someone "verbally" they would just say "bless your heart". Sometimes things like just stick for some reason, like telling an actor to break a leg.

Personally I liked the pictures but really out here in public you should upload them somewhere, provide a link, AND NOT FORGET A WARNING !

Everybody doesn't necessarily like blood and guts just because they.........never mind :-)
