So it should have been, "yes we can, but I don't know how?" How quickly we forget who had control of the White House, and both chambers of Congress for two years.

How quickly who forgets?

Yet, you seem to forget how many Blue Dogs were around way back when. I didnt say Republicans in Congress, I said Congress.

One was started... it was not completed.

Lucylastic -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (12/27/2011 10:12:37 AM)

why hasnt it been completed?

tazzygirl -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (12/27/2011 10:36:40 AM)

It was called the Pan American Railway. The intention was to connect Victoria Texas with Rio de Janeiro in the 1890's. They made it from Victoria to the Guadalupe River, at which time Victoria refused to put up any more money. It was then abandoned.

http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/eqp01

There is much not discussed about the railway system in the US. James Blaine, Secretary of State, was pushing for an intercontinental railway. There was a conference in DC during late 1889 to discuss the

convened on October 2, 1889 in Washington, DC for a six month session, 27 delegates from thirteen nations assembled to consider ways to reduce tariffs and promote trade in the Americas. Advocating the construction of a railroad in far away Ecuador was likely the last thing on their minds. "A lot of historians dismiss this conference as a major failure because it didn't produce a customs union customs union
...

But what is ignored are all of the other accomplishments, which can be credited to a large degree to the efforts of the US Secretary of State at the time, James Blaine. He saw Latin American markets as being key to the development of the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , and he believed that what would make that possible was the building of an intercontinental railroad."
...

In light of the prominence that railways enjoyed at that time, it's not surprising that many historians now consider the conference's most important accomplishment to have been the creation of the Intercontinental Railroad Commission. Enthused by Secretary Blaine's passion for an intercontinental system of rails that would link the US to the most distant points in South America South America, fourth largest continent (1991 est. pop. 299,150,000), c.6,880,000 sq mi (17,819,000 sq km), the southern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. , the commission set the plan in motion by designating the Guayaquil-Quito line as the first segment to be undertaken.

This was, in essence, the beginning of the Organization of American States - OAS

On the eve of the upcoming Summit of the Americas, John Sanbrailo marvels at the chain of events that led to today's OAS. The first inter-American gathering in Washington, DC led to creation of the International Union of American Republics which became the Pan American Union twenty years later and then, in 1948, the Organization of American States. "That was really the first Summit of the Americas," he says of the 1889-90 session, "and Eloy Alfaro was one of the earliest Pan-Americanists. He was a brilliant Ecuadoran who had this tremendous vision of how the Americas could be united in a great spirit of hemispheric solidarity. The Guayaquil-Quito Railroad was the first example of inter-American technical assistance, and without Alfaro's leadership and courage, it's doubtful that the 'Railroad in the Sky' would ever have been completed."

But, as I said, the intercontinental railway was never completed.

Same question I posed to popeye, are you really suggesting that no one in the US refused to vote for Obama becasue he is black.

As for myself, I am not bigotted against Americans, just intolerent of racists.

This.

General reply:

Nancy Pelosi`s daughter did a little indi film during the '08' prsidential campaign.

It was pretty good and even had her interveiwing Sean Hanity at one of Hanity`s side businesses,a music/political rally.

When she was down south(could have been anywhere tho, bigots abound, even in High Desert California)she ran across some guys who called President Obama the n-word and "I ain`t vote`n for no n-word" etc.

Now I sure there plenty of nice folks everywhere but I`m also sure Ms. Pelosi didn`t run into the only bigots in the area.

To be fair tho, there are people who voted for President Obama b/c of his color and people who would vote for(or against) Mitt because he is a Mormon.

It isn`t always racial/religious bigotry either. Some people vote for....or against someone, for cultural reasons so.

Most I think looked past those things and saw a man with a positive moral and calm leadership skills.me other prefference.

For sure,it`s not fair to say most republicans voted against President Obama b/c of his color. He could have been white and they would still have voted for Sarah McCainlin.

That`s just as irrational and stupid as some of President Obama`s critics whineing that they can`t criteque the president without being called racists.

There is however plenty of examples republicans making racial insults and opperating from a racial bias.

Well you sound like a racist and a bigot.
What difference does a person's race make in politics? You sound surprised that a black man could be elected to public office in the U.S.
Look at Col. Allen West the congressman from Fla.
Look at my congressman Tim Scott and plenty of others. And a LOT of people here really liked Herman Cain and don't think he should have dropped out of the race!
And what kind of a question is that?
How would *anyone* know whether someone refused to vote for Obama because he was black unless they told you so?
Sure, the KKK would.
And look at Obama, elected president. (Although he's going to be de-elected for being stupid and for ignoring the wishes of the people.)
It may be a novelty in Britain for a black person to be elected to public office but it isn't in the U.S.
And "Muslim" is not a "race" it's a practitioner of a "religion."
"Catholic" and "Lutherin," and Hindus are not "races" either, they're "religions."
Polite, did you finish high school or were you apprenticed out?

slvemike4u -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (12/27/2011 12:40:59 PM)

No Pops he doesn't seem surprised that a black man can be elected President of the US( though I for one was of the opinion that it was too soon, given how far we,the people of the US,have to go in this area) he does,on the other hand, seem genuinely surprised that there are those amongst us who would deny that it was/and is an issue.Such folks are either clueless or duplicitous.Which are you?

It isn't, as a matter of fact. There's about 30 of them in the Commons, and far more in local government posts. That's not far off 20% in the mother of parliaments and a bigger proportion outside it. Not brilliant, but things could be worse in a country with a much smaller percentage of its population black than yours.
How many blacks do you have in the senate and the congress over there?

tazzygirl -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (12/27/2011 12:52:57 PM)

Hey pops, get educated...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_slurs

http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Racism/racial_and_ethnic_slurs

The motivation for using an ethnic slur is often racism or bigotry.

Thats why in the modern era of the Senate (After Reconstruction) there have been only 4 black Senators. Note the year gaps between them.

Thanks, Tazzy. I didn't think Popeye would be up to answering that one...

tazzygirl -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (12/27/2011 1:16:49 PM)

He would ignore it because he cant answer it in a way that makes himself out to be anything more than what he is accusing others of being.
