My point is that not every problem has a one-size-fits-all solution, and we dont need to pay bureaucrats at the federal level to run our lives.

sure it is that is why we have "statutes" and "ordinances".

as I said, the Original OP was misleading, which is why I went to the report and READ the facts.

You read it, I read it, a few others have read it, obviously Sanity has not read it.

Using the cry of "public safety" you could justify an entire police state, couldn't you

From an argument you raised starting with "no singing, no music, no talking," you want to raise the cry of what you can justify?

This is built on an initial straw man. Wherever you decide to go with it, it's still fundamentally flawed.

But to rule out public safety as a legitimate point, from there you could dismantle all laws, police, military, courts...to avoid a "police state."

No one is making it about the federal govt. but you.

And not your source either:

Yet the No. 1 recommendation of the NTSB to the states is to "ban the nonemergency use of portable electronic devices

You are missing the point he's repeated a half a dozen times. Its the first STEP in a well documented strategy of the Federal government. Speed limits are "set by the states", but try and set them differently than the Feds want you too and watch what happens.

Be thankful they are no longer controlling the speed limits.

Speed limits have traditionally been the responsibility of the states. In the mid-1970s, however, Congress established a national maximum speed limit by withholding highway funds from states that maintained speed limits greater than 55 mph. The requirement was loosened for rural interstates in 1987 and completely repealed in 1995. As of today, 35 states have speed limits of 70 mph or higher on some portion of their roadway systems.
