nah...this white boy, half native american, will just pass ...it's just a good thing I'm not black however or the comment would have been against tos.

That's probably sensible. Lt. was in the 62nd Engineers (Land Clearing). He did almost 3 tours. This was him:
"In mid-April 1970, Rome Plows led American and Vietnamese units into Cambodia. The dozers opened roads, cleared airfields and bases, and uncovered enemy camps and facilities on both sides of the border. When President Nixon ordered their withdrawal on June 30, Rome Plows had already cleared 1,700 acres of jungle, performed numerous mine-clearing operations, and destroyed more than 1,000 VC structures."
http://www.military.com/HomePage/UnitPageHistory/1,13506,701430%7C700254,00.html

He became a Harley-riding Hippie when he got discharged in D.C. He's a bit more right-wing these days.

I have nothing but respect for those guys.. what a dangerous job that is and was. I’ll bet however your brother may have burned a flag in protest but he didn’t call his brothers in arms baby killers…That is why I kicked ass when I was called that by a bunch of flag burning assholes…and I wasn’t alone.

As I’ve been saying it is not the flag burning…but the reason for it that makes it disrespectful… Like your brother I fought for anyone’s right to protest as they please but that does not mean I have to respect them for it.

He says he burned one down at the Pentagon but I'm fairly sure he was talkin' trash.

Over the past couple years he's been telling me some of the shit he saw/did... some of the firefights (the real ones, not the ones his guys staged for the press embeds), clearing tunnels, having 12 kills that he knows of, and so on. He says it was the best time of his life. He loved being in the Shit.
Once he got separated from his convoy near a village they had just razed. Dirt road, rice paddies all around; all he had was his sidearm. Six shots, he said; five for Charlie, one for himself. He took off his shirt, put his shades on, took his sidearm in hand, and started walking down the road away from the burned down village, singing "Here Comes the Sun" at the top of his voice. He says it was at that time that he realized that death had no meaning. He lost what little fear of dying he had. He's that way to this day. No fear at all.
He's got some wild stories.

Had they caught up with me and sent me over there, I'm confident I would have been the same way. But I made a promise to my grandmother when I was 17 that I wouldn't go to war. She saw most of her familie and friends in Berlin killed during WWII.

US Flag Code. TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > Sec. 8(k). It states:
"The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning"

Now you other little huffy archie bunker types, who when you got those little hand held flags for waving at a parade or meeting, thoughtlessly threw it in the trash, or gave it to your kid to toy around with,  or the matchbooks with the american flag imprint on them you thoughtlessly pitched out the window,  or the envelopes with the amerian flag stamp on them you thoughtlessly sent to the dump to lay in a pile of rotting food, plastic bags and other debris (and more) are sitting in judgement on two people who thoughtfully considered that it wasnt a symbol  that was a fitting emblem for display because we've lost what it stands for and then burnt it are to be villified, seems to me I see the thoughtless destroyers of america and its symbols are howling the loudest.

You cant burn a flag in protest, but you can cut it up, wrap it around your body, get suntan lotion all over it, and that is perfectly fine.

Well, it what it is wrapped around and what it symbolizes.........

Now if it was say, Alan Greenspan wearing that outfit, I think I would have a considerably different view of it.

I could be wrong, but I am guessing no one used a real flag to make that outfit.

So, you're claiming that no flags were harmed in the making of that cheesecake?

§8. Respect for flag
No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.

The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.

The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.

The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning

So... in franking these, never mind the transient nature of a stamp, and its discardability in violation of the code..........  Boy, W is at it still and again......

I hope all you archie bunker types are threatening your congressment about this, and telling them they need to get this fuckin thing fixed, and looking into the actions of the lawless republican goons and thugs that prohibit the burning of the flag, local fucking unpatriotic ordinance or no.

I know all about the rules for respecting a flag. But as I pointed out. We were discussing a bikini that was made from a roll of printed fabric. Not a flag.

Not allowed

Not allowed.

Guess what is allowed?

Burning.

When people start complaining about the many varied ways the flag is disrespected, and do something about it, then they can bitch about the burning of a flag in political protest.

Remember we are not bitching about the flag...or it's burning...just the assholes doing it...There is a difference even if you continue to ignore it.
