I'm watching one of the precincts in Iowa count the votes as I type this and what is on my screen right now:

Romney - 1st - 34%
Santorum - 2nd - 24%
Paul - 3rd - 15%

The rest are clumped very close together with very few votes and none of those reach the required 15% to garner a delegate.

Just one count out of the masses .. so will see how it all goes!

eta: %

3rd precinct

Santorum - 1st
Paul - 2nd
Romney 3rd

No one else has enough votes in this precinct to garner themselves a single delegate.

Roland Jennings quipped that after months of hearing Republican strategists and consultants speak of the significence of Iowa we will see a 180 should Paul win......Iowa is actually insignificant.....lol.

Nobody likes Romney.  The rest of the field is worse.  Beats me how the GOP can get forty candidates, and this is the caliber.

I'm trying to think of the implications.

Romney is the big loser (aside from the below-third-placers).  He's supposed to be the frontrunner and he's in a dead heat.

Paul is a winner.  He's hanging with the big boys.

Santorum is the blockbuster winner.  He's well positioned to present himself as the conservative alternative to Romney.  His game plan is to squeeze out Perry and Bachmann and get their support.

Romney's hope now is to gain momentum with a big win in NH.  Santorum will try to hold major fundraisers leveraging his newfound credibility and get enough cash to mount an offensive in NH.  Paul's going to be the wild card because his independent style should play well in NH.

Gingrich, Bachmann, Perry, and Huntsman now have to reassess.  I think that Newt is cooked, but the others can hope to make another run in four (or eight) years.

This spectacle ain't gonna be pretty.  All the GOP candidates will shred each other while Obama can count on the Dem nomination.  The lack of vicious attacks is a huge advantage for an incumbent, and the system needs to be rejiggered to avoid that.

Okay.. another live count update:

This one goes:

Paul - 1st
Santorum - 2nd
Romney - 3rd

Again, the rest did not garner enough votes to earn a delegate.

(Cain got one vote which was one more than Huntsman!)

Considering how little support that Perry and Bachmann got in Iowa, I'm not sure it's going to be anywhere close to enough. He's spent, literally, all his time and effort (and most of his money) in Iowa and pretty much ignored all the other states. He is known there. Is he going to be as known in SC or NH? Probably not. Time will tell. He'll probably get a bit of momentum but not if he keeps putting his foot in his mouth.

The thing I find interesting is that we hear all this talk about how the Radicals figure to let Obama take the heat for the economy, then come in '12 to claim the prize when he's done the heavy lifting, which is why the current crop of candidates are from the looney-tunes fringe of the party - only if that's the case, just WHO are the 'real' leaders sitting this one out who will supposedly step up later? Inquiring minds want to know.

The two that come to mind immediately are Christie and Jindel.

Now, Mike.. you know that having a chance (or not!) never stopped someone from running!

I forgot about Rubio cute little spin meister that he is but, yep, I'd add him to the list for 2016 as well. Might even get another Bush in there to boot.
