I don't see things getting better in my state. Boeing Aircraft recently announced they are closing the Wichita KS manufacturing plant. That's going to put quite a few people out of work. Hopefully the over 2,000 workers will be able to find other employment, even if it only pays a third of their former union based salaries.

Virtually all of the corporate world is in the business of eliminating jobs. In fact as recently as 2010 IBM announced a record quarterly profit of $3.3 billion and then celebrated that achievement by also announcing a layoff of 8000 people.

So much for the corporation being a good corporate citizen and serving society...it is not and does not.

Actually, if you look at the differences between November and December numbers, there isnt much difference from this year to prior years in comparison.

http://portalseven.com/employment/unemployment_rate.jsp

http://portalseven.com/employment/unemployment_rate_u6.jsp

U6 numbers reflect the same. 2007, and increase in unemployment, 2008, increase, 2009, steady, 2010 and 2011 decrease.

Price of fuel seems certain to go up as tensions increase re Iran.

Just as a personal observation of available parking at truck stops and furl pumps (which I think is as reliable as any other indicator)... trucking is at the very best stagnant.

Rumor is the plant I haul for closes in Mar... one hears a lot of rumors, of course; but their only product is housing related; and that aint comin back for years if not decades.

Another indicator is the Baltic Dry Index. Not looking so good.

I admit I am not familiar with that.

So marginal increases in demand can push the index higher quickly, and marginal demand decreases can cause the index to fall rapidly.

Does that mean small changes can cause huge fluctuations?

Yes, as "The supply of cargo ships is generally both tight and inelastic ... small fleet changes and logistical matters can crash rates..."[6] The index indirectly measures global supply and demand for the commodities shipped aboard dry bulk carriers, such as building materials, coal, metallic ores, and grains."

Here is a perspective worth checking out.

Look at the 5yr BDI chart. Ultimately (at least in my opinion) the BDI is not showing the recovery as touted.

Yeah, but I wonder if that is corrected for the massive buildup of chinese shipping, which is gonna skew those numbers.  is it, do you know?

Here's some anecdotal evidence.
Last night on the way back from the gym I passed (another) pretty young girl hitchiking (16,18?)
I've noticed this more and more over the last year or so.
Where are the jobs for young people who would like to work?
So, if you like young girls who want to go into the adult entertainment industry then I guess things are getting better for you.

Actually popeye, I'd like to see some young people who WOULD like to work!

I was looking for kids to work for me for the longest time...and simply gave up!

I offered pay above minimum wage, a very flexible schedule so they could continue their sports teams/ summer classes, paid breaks with refreshments I furnished, an hour for lunch, and a bonus at Christmas. I was looking for house sitters, yard and garden help, and some occasional housecleaning when I was going to entertain. Nothing difficult. And I couldn't find ONE person that would apply. I even called the school counselors.

Many (NOT ALL) of today's kids are so used to having things handed to them, given to them, they have no interest in working. I see kids hanging out in parking lots and on street corners in the city, who'd rather complain about being bored out of their minds than get their hands dirty.

So please don't tell me there are no jobs for young people that want to work.

I agree. There is always work.

One might have to go looking for it, and to actually do it once it's found.

Opportunities are built, not distributed.

Yes....

A couple good indicators.

Just after bush`s recession started, folks all over the country started cashing in their coins.Piggy banks, the huge bottles folks fill up with coins etc. were being put back into the economy. Those coins collected at banks were eventually back at the federal reserve bank, piling up to the point where they stopped minting new coins.

They just started minting again indicating that folks are spending more money and using more money.

Another good indicator is the existing home inventory is finally going DOWN after 3 years of only going up.With thousands and thousands MORE homes than usual going into the market because of the massive foreclosures, that drove the price of all existing homes down and made it almost impossible for new home building to be economical or profitable.

Added:

I think anecdotally, someone`s mind is in the gutter.Good wank fodder tho.......

My understanding is that changes in the shipping fleet are accounted for. Now you say there is / has been a massive buildup of Chinese tonnage available. Would you please source that?

Interesting article about the upcoming budget fight in the house.

http://news.yahoo.com/tea-party-may-rebuffed-tax-cut-showdown-060351009.html

Here is an excerpt talking about their priorities.

"Now, with Democratic and Republican negotiators preparing for a new round of talks in the coming days to extend the payroll tax cut for the rest of the year, Republican leaders are anxious to move quickly to get a deal, aides said.

Party leaders fear another battle could distract from the more important task at hand - ousting President Barack Obama from the White House and winning majority control of the Senate in the November elections. They also want to neutralize an issue that Democrats already are using to their advantage in the presidential and congressional campaigns."

It shows that the priorities of the Republican party are NOT fixing the mess we're in but "Getting rid of Obama"

They don't give a shit what happens to us as long as they win this fall.

Whatever happened to the GOP I grew up with?
