Or a lack of caring what the 'audience' thinks about them. When in doubt, I try to assume neither.

If an audience knows you only through prose, and you can't even be arsed to make an effort to try to get that right, then a certain disdain from people who can be arsed to make the effort is only natural, though.
(And there's quite a difference between that and somebody who starts throwing a histrionic shitfit about typos or split infinitives after every other attampt to shoot somebody they don't like down has failed. The way the two are being run together in this thread is a bit depressing, really.)

Interestingly English grammar or even the spoken and written words used in the United States have absolutely nothing at all to do with communication and achieving desired result when negotiating with three or four people speaking a different language. Limiting ones self to a single language is where the ignorance comes in.

I had an English teacher in the tenth grade give me a book reading and writing assignment, I responded with the first two pages written in Italian, the next two pages in the Shoshone language and the final eleven pages written separately in Comanche, Kiowa, Apache and Caddo. She ask me what is this, I ask her, are you to ignorant to read it and on my way home after getting kicked out of school stopped by the BIA office to share my little tale with the dumb Indians working there. The dumb Indians that taught me their language.

Seriously, I don't recall seeing this mistake so much in the past as I have in the last few years. Anyone else notice it seems to be a fairly recent phenomenon?


Yet the majority on these boards, according to Jello, are at least high school graduates and should know better.

You are right. I would rather err on the side of caution. For many, especially here, the desire to communicate gets all wrapped up in the emotions. Trying to express yourself when new to a lifestyle that is considered "deviant" is very daunting initially.

You actually sit there, read a post, and count the number of split infinitives they have? Wow, I need to hide my dangling participles.

An English writing assignment should be written in English. I bet those wise old Indians knew that. After all, if they had not taken the trouble to learn English (or some other language you knew), they could not have taught you anything. What if you had turned in a Shoshone writing assignment in Italian, then called that teacher ignorant and been kicked out? Would you think that was clever too?
