Many of my coworkers are ESL and they appreciate my corrections, which I offer in the spirit above.

I let a coworker who irritated me use "cue" for "queue" for a long time before I finally told her.

That word "queue" is a horrid word! As someone who studied French, starting (Maybe I should have spent more time, studying English?) in fifth grade, I can tell you that that is a horrible word to try an pronounce.

The idiomatic expression: "Faire la queue" is from whence the Brits got their "I'm going to queue up for the movie, now". It means the same thing but that is not how the word is pronounced in French. It is a horrible word that the froggies should strike from their language or they should agree to make it easier on the rest of us and pronounce it the way we English speakers do!

(Sorry. I've been waiting to get that off my chest since the fifth grade)

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Since we are now officially being kinder and more gentle to the compositionally challenged amongst us... is the verb dominate now interchangeable with the noun dominant around these parts?

I won't even contact sellers on Craigslist whose ads are poorly written no matter how much I'd like to purchase the item. Huge. Red. Flag.

I have found that someone who identifies as a "dominate" usually comes from somewhere below the Mason-Dixon wall or parts of Arkansas.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

The desire, even need, to view other people as less intelligent stems from the human ego.  It feels good to "know" that you are more intelligent that someone else, particularly if that person just happens to be on the other side of your political/religious/philosophical views, since it apparently validates your own posistion:  "They're an idiot therefore they are wrong and I am right... as usual."

Amen to this.  I am always a bit perplexed though, at just how much energy is spent criticizing the way people write.  There are all sorts of reasons people might not write well - who am I to determine what is acceptable and what is not (as far as reasoning goes)?  Everyone is in whatever place they are in, with whatever education they received, and with whatever motivations they carry.  Learning to change a tire is no more a priority to me than Joe Blow's decision to not prioritize the need to write well.  To each their own.

We're all ignorant in something.  Apparently we only accept those ignorances which are our own, eh?

This one bug's hell out of me too. And for some reason it seem's much more prevalent these day's. So Kali, dear, would you please go feed the horse's, dog's and cat's?

My Daddy writes like this.  He misspells an occasional word now and then, but he throws those apostrophes in everywhere. I figure he never learned about apostrophes and has been too busy working two jobs and raising a daughter to research it.  Since his jobs do not require much in the way of writing skills, apostrophes have not been his focus.

What I do know is that I am glad I looked beyond that in our initial online interactions (and I did notice them, and they did bug me a little) so I could become involved with one of the wisest, compassionate, hardest working, loving, logical, ethical men I've ever known.  Fortunately the poor schooling he received in the economically depressed city he grew up in did not impair his character.

I wonder - - we (generality) revere our sports heroes.  Do we think the ones who don't write well are idiots?  We throw our money at them by going to games, buying team merchandise, tuning in our TV's...so we're OK with supporting idiots, then?  We just don't want to read them?

I am a huge sports fan. I don't go to a whole lot of games, anymore and the channel that carries my team comes with my basic cable package so, I don't support them very much.

I have been saying for years that I love watching some guys play the game (Troy Palamalu and I'm not a Pittsburgh fan) but I wish they would STFU on social issues and they should all be banned from Twitter!

I don't even like the hair shampoo commercials that Troy is doing because he looks like a fool. He's not even smart enough to realize that he looks silly (while he's cashing that six-figure check).

Peace and comfort,

Michael

The Alabama-LSU game had 24.2 million viewers. The New Orleans/Detroit game had over 31 million viewers. Large viewers equals more money for advertisements, more visibility and popularity (of the players) and therefore more sponsorship, more opportunity to star in commercials, magazine ads, late night talk shows, etc., which means more money in their pockets.

So, by simply being a viewer, you are supporting them.

ETA:  My point is that everyone is talented in something, and everyone is ignorant in something.  Some ignorances are overlooked by the general populace when their talent is a popular one.

Paul McCartney, Lindsey Buckingham, Hans Zimmer, Jimi Hendrix are just a handful of musicians who couldn't/can't read music.  Yet their talents far outweigh that missing skill.  I wouldn't exactly call them musical idiots.

Why do people assume someone's ability to write, type, spell, use punctuation, ect, are indicative of intelligence?

Could it be that people can be smart yet not write very well?

In answer to your question......Yes,I am damm near half a genus(my son completed the trip,he is a full fledged genius....lol)...but I cant write, punctuate nor spell so good

LOL

Im very glad to see someone else own up to it. Sometimes I am just too lazy. I try to catch spelling errors, but often I could care less about things like apostrophes.

With me some spelling errors are not in fact spelling errors, they are nothing more than typing errors.....and though I try to remind myself to check read prior to submitting, there are times the football game or the telephone call, crossword puzzle or whatever else I am doing distracts me.In other words I rarely, extremely rarely devote all my attention to doing this.
Shit sometimes I am simply chewing gum

If all you have to judge someone by is their written words then you must judge their written words.

It's easy to judge.

Not so easy to judge well though,as you have often demonstrated

Well now I am of course going there,so before I do care to tell me whether or not this thread was inspired by a certain poster referring to me and some others as stupid ,ignorant and guilty of a multitude of punctuation errors ?
'Cause when I saw this ,and who started it that was my first thought(runaway ego eh?)

If the Alabama or LSU players made any money on that game, they're in a lot of trouble with the NCAA. Anyway, you're right but someone that stays home and watches 'Bama and LSU (Roll fuckin' TIDE!) on ESPN which is part of a basic cable package is not doing as much supporting as someone who goes to games, eats the food, buys the merchandise, etc. (Okay. I do own an Alabama ballcap or three).

I was just giving that as my "resumé" as far as how little I support any sports endeavors.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Yeah, I got a man who would vigorously disagree with you! (And, yes, dammit, I had to use spell check for that!)
