WTF? It caused her great fear and anxiety? Shit if it were me I would have thought it romantic and sweet. Maybe I'm naive and don't see the inherent danger of his having tracked her down?

The part that I was a bit confused with was him "tracking her down".
Um..did she not hand her DL to him when he pulled her over?
Mind you, I think it's unprofessional and inappropriate, but not quite stalking and terrorizing ffs.

I heard about this. There is a strong case for invasion of privacy and his "overuse" of powers, I believe they called it.

It would actually be impossible for a cop to find me.. my PO Box is on my license and the other address that might be in their database is way old and i am not there anymore..

Since cops can do background checks, I dont believe a cop could resist doing that behind my back which is one reason why i wont date cops in the first place..

It is stalkerish, a cop is privy to info that an average guy doesnt have so for him to do that.. well,... I would be upset also.. I wonder if there is more to the story like her telling him no and him not accepting that?

Using the DMV computers for "personal reasons" is a nono for any cop I've ever known and I've been told it can be grounds for termination but a 'talking to and note in your file' is much more likely.
This qualifies.

Having a guy that you know for sure is armed and has certain powers over the general public track you down out of the blue and pursue you sexually would probably squick a lot of women.

Abuse of power. Stalking behavior. Invasion of privacy.

While it might have been a sweet notion, he was way out of line. As someone who has actually been stalked before, yes, someone using a DMV database to find out where I lived going to said place and leaving a note on my car would absolutely cause me stress.

If he had all that info at his fingertips, he should have just picked up the phone and called her. It would have been less "stalky" than that. She doesn't know him from Adam. Now he knows where she lives and what she drives. I'm all for romance, but that's a bit creepy.

I have a friend, female, did some shopping at a nameless big box warehouse store (Hint-they sell electronics and their initials are BB) and the guy at the counter flirted with her a bit while she paid with her credit card.
Imagine her shock when, hours later at home, she got a call from the guy asking her out-the kid had tracked her down using her credit card info to access her account data online from the store, including her address and digits (She had previously had stuff shipped from said store)
Yeah, he was sooooooo fired the second she complained and they were damn lucky they didn't get sued.

On the flip side one of my sisters bought a little sports car one day, and the first time she drove it she wanted to see how fast it would go so she wound it out (She was young, shrugs,what can I say-kids do stupid shit, even otherwise sensible ones.) and got pulled over by a cop. She pulled every trick in the book, new car, batted lashes, fake tears and the idiot still gave her a ticket.
Then he asked her out.
Big mistake.
She tore him a new asshole chewing him out on the side of the road-I wish I'd been there to see it.
What kinda idiot gives the ticket, then asks for the date?

Dude, give her a break, score some points, then go for the gratitude date.

oh i suppose he could get a warrant for my arrest issued and hope i was stopped but that would get not only him in deep do-do but the police dept sued for false arrest as well... other than that, i dont see how.. likely he would go after easier to find prey..

Exactly. While it was unprofessional and inappropriate I don't see it as the nefarious plot some here see it as. He didn't do it for the purposes of stalking her, he did it simply to ask her out. My guess is that he wouldn't be wearing his gun on that date lol.

Just called a friend who is a cop, ran this scenario by him. He said that in the post Patriot Act world, as long as the agencies involved are playing nicely and sharing according to Hoyle, a cop should be able to circumvent this and track someones real address pretty quickly...unless the person is really taking effort to live underground, no property in their name or registered to fake addys, no vehicles, taxes filed to false addresses etc...

As citizens, we are asked to trust our law officials to handle our personal information with integrity. If it starts becoming OK for any cop out there to look up anyone's information on their databases for personal reasons, well where is the integrity there? Where is the line drawn? Because I thought the line was drawn at "for legal purposes only."

As for not doing it for the purpose of stalking her...did she know that? I mean, the man who was stalking me didn't think he was actually stalking me. He just thought he was being nice.

There are good and valid reasons our privacy should be protected. There are reasons women don't give their addresses out to men they don't know.
