Whatever happened to walking the plank ??

Not something that was ever done historically in the first place, sadly. It seems to have been invented for an Erroll Flynn flick...

But the phrase far predates motion pictures:

The earliest known use of the phrase is the latter half of the 18th century. Some writers in the 20th century speculated that walking the plank may be a myth created by cinema; however, the phrase "walking the plank" is recorded in English writer Francis Grose's "Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue",[1] which was published in 1788 (first published in 1785).

Historical instances of plank walking

In 1769, mutineer George Wood confessed to his chaplain at Newgate Prison that he and his fellow mutineers had sent their officers to walk the plank.[2]

In July 1822, William Smith, captain of the British sloop Blessing, was forced to walk the plank by the Spanish pirate crew of the schooner Emanuel in the West Indies.

The Times reported on February 14, 1829 that the packet Redpole (Bullock, master) was captured by the pirate schooner President and sunk. The commander was shot and the crew were made to walk the plank.[3]

In 1829, pirates intercepted the Dutch brig Vhan Fredericka in the Leeward Passage between the Virgin Islands, and murdered most of the crew by making them walk the plank with cannonballs tied to their feet[4].

My mistake. They did do that, then.
(How do you tie a cannonball to somebody?)

Now, THIS usage......

....I'd walk my plank up that.......

Musicmystery -> RE: This is how Russian Sailors handle pirates. (1/15/2012 1:10:22 PM)

Maybe we should all use this thread as an object lesson about how carefully edited video can be used to inflame emotions in people.

Remember. When you see something on the net or in the news, your first thought shouldn't be "How awesome" or "How Awful".

Your first thought should be "What do those who presented this WANT want me to think?"
Secondly, give it the 'sniff test' and turn on your "bullshit detector".
Just because someone agrees with you idealogically doesn't mean they aren't lying to you and it's embarassing as hell when you repeat their lies and get caught in it.
Likewise. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they aren't being 100% truthful.

Learn to read (or watch) critically.

I largely agree with your viewpoint although I think it is largely impossible to truly switch off one's initial reactions as people come to material with a lot of preconceived ideas so it may be more fruitful to critically analyse this stuff subsequently. Personally I thought the video was designed to excite a sort of macho booyah response.

I think we agree, we just dont realize it LOL.

The first time I watched the vid, my initial reaction was "YEAH, kick some pirate ASSS". then I looked at some replies so I looked at again like a coach (as I used to be) watching game film and saw inconsistencies.
Wakes, quality of marksmanship, people on boat now vs people on boat when shooting was underway and a lot of other stuff. I looked it like a coach looking at a game film and things started to stink.
The conclusion I drew, which may be wrong please feel free to disagree, is that the Russkies captured a bunch of pirates and then used the boat for target practice (WE do that as well). Someone took the raw video and carefully edited it in such a way as to inflame emotions. It worked too.

Yeah I was agreeing with your perspective rather than that of Rogers when I replied to you initially, and we have the same view on what probably happened versus what is presented in the vid – it does seem that a lot of editing was done for effect.

Here's a less exciting video: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=040_1273842916

When the Russians and Somalis speak to each other they use English O_o

Still looking for the backstory behind the 6/4/10 vid - not sure if that's May or June.

http://blog.usni.org/2010/05/16/video-of-russian-navy-boarding-and-sinking-somali-pirate-ship/

Captured pirates are set free in a single skiff or whaler with enough supplies to reach land, and the rest of the boats are ‘disabled’.

On the English being used, it *is* the international maritime language, so it is presumed that any sailor understands rudimentary English – especially when spoken behind an assault rifle.

It is noted elsewhere, but the captured ‘pirates’ don’t all look very Somali. This may mean that the Russians also ‘rescued’ a crew who themselves had been hijacked and whose ship had been used as a mothership (a favorite Somali tactic), or the pirate business has started to attract some international entrepreneurs.

am i the only one who finds it a little ironic that russians are confiscating kalashnikovs? a bit of a conflict of interest there.

Moonhead -> RE: This is how Russian Sailors handle pirates. (1/17/2012 5:04:15 AM)

There's been a few cases recently of non Somali outsiders moving in on the lucrative pirate business, believe it or not. The chimp's muslim mate Al has even been mentioned in reference to this.

They weld a chain to it and padlock it to the ankle.

I don't know...remember we dropped an atomic bomb on a city knowing there was an American prisoner of war camp...damn hypocritical democratic president gave the ok.

Do you ever think before you post?

But that aside we have been very fair with our encounters with pirates don't you think?

No I do not think we have been fair in all of our encounters with the somali pirates.

True, we did but our military has tried for decades to absolutely minimize collateral damage

I think we have but if you listen to some little girl from Australia they are all murdering thugs. And I'll bet many here would argue with you...They believe we are indiscriminate world bullies. I guess it is the price we pay when we try to fulfill our duty as the worlds preeminent power.

Butch

How exactly does the constution define the duties of the worlds preeminent power?

I vaguely remember a saying in No-Mans Nam...........something about "Waste 'em all and let god sort out the good ones" ..........It worked admirably there. The land behind us was always peaceful and friendly.

Obviously you were never in viet nam.

Butch

Mongrels???Ain't you just the little pc biggot.

Tweak, what's with the melodramatics, "MURDER?"
It's not "murder" that's the "penalty" they pay for being pirates. Don't you think they're aware of that?
"They" got caught so it was *they* who had to pay the point.
Boy, you do know that if you were in the U.S. during the Barbary Pirate days and you expressed sympathy for pirates you'd be hung from a tree, right?

Are you saying that the constitution did not apply to citizens of the u.s.???You know due process and freedom of speech.
Do you ever think before you shoot your mouth off?

I don't know what it is about the leftists, they always seem to show sympathy for the *bad guys.*

Kinda like haley barbour huh?

Also, pirates have killed plenty of people, was it last year or the year before that two German or French couples were "murdered" on their pleasure boat?
And on plenty of Merchantmen as well.

Any idea why they are pirates? No of course not, you would rather wave your dick than actually educate yourself.

In 1822 just how did they weld these cannon balls to the chain? Did they use an arc welder???if so how did they power it?
Did they use oxy-acetylene? Where did they get the acetylene?

Moonhead -> RE: This is how Russian Sailors handle pirates. (1/17/2012 2:14:31 PM)

I was wondering that myself.
