I'm hoping people remember this example next time they argue against free trade.

Very true. There's a difference between "work" and "overwork", though.
I'd also wonder if anybody in the 'States is still breeding draft horses, though. It's quite possible that the Amish might be forcing horses that don't really belong in that role into it, which would explain Tigresse's concerns. The photos of the buggies I've seen, they don't have Irish drafts in front of them, put it that way.

Thank you. Somebody is, then.

The Draft breeds popular in America are Clydesdale, Belgian or Belgian Draft, Percheron, Suffolk or Suffolk Punch, and the great Shire.

Right.

Yet again, the question is....

If the Amish have cell phones and use Facebook, yet don't use electricity, something doesn't add up.

So what is it? Have times changed since people last thought they "knew" the Amish?

How that's "a rally against the Amish" I can't imagine. They're welcome to the electricity. If you don't want to stay on the topic, visit other threads.

Is it a self-sufficiency thing--for example, is windmill generated power acceptable?

Anyone know?

No Amish *I* know has had electricity, nor a cellphone. Sorry...
Also, Mennonites have long been thrown into the pile with Old Order Amish. They use electricity, drive their own vehicles, and by now probably have cellphones. (Shrugs)
But hey! Keep on ranting! It looks good on ya! LMAO

The majority of horses the Amish use are, at least part, American Standardbred. It's a tall, rangy, heavier horse that is closely related to the American Thoroughbred.

The drafts are not as frequently seen and used only for heavy work. The two breeds of draft horses I see most often are Belgian and Percheron.

1) Well then, you clearly are not up to speed:

"The Amish ... do use cellphones, and the numbers of Amish on social networking sites like Facebook are increasing."

2) Rant? What's the problem? It's a question about the electricity, and it's been answered and supported:

The Amish approach to electricity is somewhat complicated. Almost all Amish groups forgo using power from the public grid. But the Amish do rely on a variety of other sources to generate electric power.]

That's one of the amusing things about the Amish: they have a schism and a few new sects forming every time something that looks useful and/or fun is invented...

This is really uncalled for.

To be fair, that's true of Christian congregations and just about any large group...their circle is always the one true way.

Rather like those on this forum. (Smiles) Oops! Herrrre comes a golden message!

LaTigresse -> RE: Amish Sexting? (1/16/2012 12:16:04 PM)

Christ Click, if you get a gold message for that........someone REALLY doesn't like you!

Then again, maybe you shouldn't talk about yourself that way.....[;)]

Musicmystery -> RE: Amish Sexting? (1/16/2012 12:16:28 PM)

Really, you need to go back and read in context. You're seeing what you want to see instead of what's in the thread.

How so? There's an awful lot of schismatic Amish groups.

There are MANY draft horse breeders here, and efforts to preserve rare breeds. Whether farmers are using them instead of lighter breeds, I can't say. The Amish in Michigan that I have seen (LARGE Amish/Mennonite population here) are not mistreating animals, and are hard working people. My cousin who has properties up north knows a great crew of construction guys but they won't stay in a hotel so we never get to use them.

Musicmystery -> RE: Amish Sexting? (1/16/2012 12:19:17 PM)

There always have been, for centuries.

Moonhead -> RE: Amish Sexting? (1/16/2012 12:21:56 PM)

Yep. I wonder why Click thinks pointing that out is out of order.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Amish Sexting? (1/16/2012 12:22:59 PM)

Schism is what CREATED the Amish.

Moonhead -> RE: Amish Sexting? (1/16/2012 12:24:06 PM)

Yep.

Musicmystery -> RE: Amish Sexting? (1/16/2012 12:24:22 PM)

Was wondering that about the rest of her posts too, frankly. Seems to have come in with a preconceived notion different that the content.

Along with wanting to be the Amish expert.
