Same with Ohio, Medina has a large Amish community. They buy much of their food products from GFS. Their food business, with that company, was over 100,000 a year. I dont begrudge them that business in anyway. But, self reliance is the ability to depend only upon yourself. They are depending on the outside community for those sales.

As for self reliance. Go to any farmer's market around here. Craft show. Gift shop. Drive down the roads and see the signs. Amish made this, Amish made that. Hell, the hay auction I go to has them hauling in all sorts of things to sell. Goats, firewood (with chainsaw marks...) feed bins they've built, you name it. They are not just selling this stuff to one another.

Interesting story, actually. With increasing population dividing the same farmland, some Amish found it necessary to take outside jobs, and with little education, this meant factory work. Factories, as you can imagine, didn't gel well with Amish values, so they turned to cottage industries as a solution.

Some of these have been remarkably successful, with some businesses exceeding $500,000 in profits. This is causing new concerns that the newly wealthy will become a commercial class and become dissatisfied with traditional Amish life. More than half of Amish men now work in these non-farming industries.

That is interesting. I know that here, in Iowa City, they are marketing their building skills and the people in town buy. Someone I know, had them build a huge garden shed. They paid a ridiculously premium price for what they got. But they are happy.

Great marketing ploy. Kinda like the wood cabinets for those heaters they advertise on television.

With our dramatically increasing land prices, it's only going to become a bigger problem I think.

2) Rant? What's the problem? It's a question about the electricity, and it's been answered and supported:

No...it's about anything and everything that can be attached to them and the ways they are being ridiculed in this thread.
They may be well used to it...but as their friend, I haven't reached that point yet.

Enjoy your thread! (Smiles)

That's pretty narrow, taz. By your definition, no one could truly be self-reliant, and that's not how we use the term in common usage.

Here's one of the most famous essays on self-reliance, and a wonderful read.

Then you need a re-read.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Amish Sexting? (1/16/2012 1:10:31 PM)

The Amish here are always selling preserves, baked goods, truck farm stuff, cheeses, and of course offering construction work. Top flight work, and they aren't about to "leave town"!

Musicmystery -> RE: Amish Sexting? (1/16/2012 1:11:57 PM)

Yup. And that's self-reliance.

Solving their own problems.

Please point out the ridicule. I havent seen any. There were some jokes made, yes. Are you saying we should treat them with reverence?

Beyond the few jokes, I dont see any ridicule, open or cloaked. So I must ask that you point it out to me.

Yes, they have made the most of the opportunities offered them, and largely without compromising their values.

Christ Click, if you get a gold message for that........someone REALLY doesn't like you!

Then again, maybe you shouldn't talk about yourself that way.....[;)]

Oh my goodness! I'd have to be beyond dense not to see what you all (and the Mods) think of me and my posts! LMAO
You should see the messages I get! I get called names I've never even heard of before...no kidding!
I had to message someone just yesterday and ask them what they meant. (Too funny!)

True, it is narrow.

But isnt the word "self reliant" meaning relying upon self? Yes, they are hard workers, and they are amazing craftsmen. They are more self reliant than any other group I can think of. But, they are not an island.

These people are incredibly hard-working, and I doubt that most of you (myself included) could even begin to keep up with them doing the work they do in just one day.

Yes they are. When I was in my pre and early teens I spent a lot of time on one of the Nisly farms near Kalona. It is where I learned to butcher chickens and ride unbroke horses without killing myself. I also learned how to cut and split fire wood and cook on a wood cook stove. We used to spend all day in the gardens for days at a time.

I also had an Amish midwife when my son was born and learned a lot about acupressure from her.

You believe you know what we think. Have you asked?

As far as people messaging you. I have to wonder about people who are so spineless as to attack in a mail. If I didnt like what you are saying, I will say so on that thread.

Yes, they DO make the majority of what they own, along with many items that they sell to the rest of us. However, I don't see them using any brut force to get the nonAmish to buy their products ...(chuckling) unless of course they use different tactics during hay auctions...

Many agree with you on the work ethic, and the beauty of their products. But, I have to ask again, are they deserving of reverence?

Well, drop it in this thread, please. No one has called you any names; in fact, you came waltzing in sword swinging yourself, over nothing. If anything, you got called on factual inaccuracies.

It's an otherwise nice conversation. Pull up a chair, have a seat, and get to know a few people.

Taz, you've already been answered in the post you quote.

tazzygirl -> RE: Amish Sexting? (1/16/2012 1:26:03 PM)

LOL

I was working with a more "clinical: definition of the word. You are working with a "world" definition of the word.

Musicmystery -> RE: Amish Sexting? (1/16/2012 1:31:38 PM)

Yes. I live in the world.

;-)

Was wondering that about the rest of her posts too, frankly. Seems to have come in with a preconceived notion different that the content.

Along with wanting to be the Amish expert.

Just to clarify, I NEVER said I was an expert on the Amish! I SAID I was close friends with an Amish family, and that I couldn't wait to see what people were going to say about them throughout this thread.
They are treated so unfairly, ridiculed, endure the utmost sarcasm and disrespect, merely because they live a life that is so different from ours.
And all they want to do is live their lives as they believe and to be left alone.

I have spent time with them...physical time. I've heard the jeers they get from people driving by, seen people literally spit on the ground in front of them in disgust.
They've shared their lives with me...firsthand.

I will defend them...they are my friends.
