kalikshama -> English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/17/2012 3:23:09 PM)

To: English Wikipedia Readers and Community
From: Sue Gardner, Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director
Date: January 16, 2012

Today, the Wikipedia community announced its decision to black out the English-language Wikipedia for 24 hours, worldwide, beginning at 05:00 UTC on Wednesday, January 18 (you can read the statement from the Wikimedia Foundation here). The blackout is a protest against proposed legislation in the United States — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate — that, if passed, would seriously damage the free and open Internet, including Wikipedia.

This will be the first time the English Wikipedia has ever staged a public protest of this nature, and it’s a decision that wasn’t lightly made. Here’s how it’s been described by the three Wikipedia administrators who formally facilitated the community’s discussion. From the public statement, signed by User:NuclearWarfare, User:Risker and User:Billinghurst:

It is the opinion of the English Wikipedia community that both of these bills, if passed, would be devastating to the free and open web.

Over the course of the past 72 hours, over 1800 Wikipedians have joined together to discuss proposed actions that the community might wish to take against SOPA and PIPA. This is by far the largest level of participation in a community discussion ever seen on Wikipedia, which illustrates the level of concern that Wikipedians feel about this proposed legislation. The overwhelming majority of participants support community action to encourage greater public action in response to these two bills. Of the proposals considered by Wikipedians, those that would result in a “blackout” of the English Wikipedia, in concert with similar blackouts on other websites opposed to SOPA and PIPA, received the strongest support.

On careful review of this discussion, the closing administrators note the broad-based support for action from Wikipedians around the world, not just from within the United States. The primary objection to a global blackout came from those who preferred that the blackout be limited to readers from the United States, with the rest of the world seeing a simple banner notice instead. We also noted that roughly 55% of those supporting a blackout preferred that it be a global one, with many pointing to concerns about similar legislation in other nations.

In making this decision, Wikipedians will be criticized for seeming to abandon neutrality to take a political position. That’s a real, legitimate issue. We want people to trust Wikipedia, not worry that it is trying to propagandize them.

But although Wikipedia’s articles are neutral, its existence is not. As Wikimedia Foundation board member Kat Walsh wrote on one of our mailing lists recently,

We depend on a legal infrastructure that makes it possible for us to operate. And we depend on a legal infrastructure that also allows other sites to host user-contributed material, both information and expression. For the most part, Wikimedia projects are organizing and summarizing and collecting the world’s knowledge. We’re putting it in context, and showing people how to make to sense of it.

But that knowledge has to be published somewhere for anyone to find and use it. Where it can be censored without due process, it hurts the speaker, the public, and Wikimedia. Where you can only speak if you have sufficient resources to fight legal challenges, or if your views are pre-approved by someone who does, the same narrow set of ideas already popular will continue to be all anyone has meaningful access to.

SOPA and PIPA will have a global effect - websites outside of the U.S. would be impacted by legislation that hurts the free and open web. And, other jurisdictions are grappling with similar issues, and may choose paths similar to SOPA and PIPA.

my sites will be down in solidarity.
ANything the US does to censor the internet will fuck it up for the rest of the world
damn right Im against it.
Could be a quiet day work wise!!!

Musicmystery -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/18/2012 6:55:26 AM)

If by free and open web, with free speech, we mean the right to freely steal copyrighted material, shut it down.

And freely steal is the rule out there.

Sorry. Not with you on this.

Lucylastic -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/18/2012 7:06:13 AM)

With respect MM Its not the piracy alone thats the issue
you are entitled to feel how you feel.
You dont have to be sorry:) [;)]

Musicmystery -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/18/2012 7:13:57 AM)

No...it's the enforcement of piracy laws.

It's overdue. Long overdue.

We are a culture that largely feels theft of content is a god-given right, whether audio, video, or text. It's not. With better control of this, several people -- including me -- wouldn't have left artistic work as a source of income.

Lucylastic -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/18/2012 7:23:11 AM)

I have my source of income to protect too and SOPA and PIPA is not just about Piracy

Musicmystery -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/18/2012 7:27:31 AM)

So people keep saying. Yet to support that, only wild projections about police states shutting them down.

No, it's not about just piracy--it's about enforcing piracy laws in an environment that is without any control.

An outcry from a citizenry feeling downloading copyrighted music, movies, even entire articles and books without the artists/authors consent as their rights is not exactly a base that has my sympathy when they justify this theft as "free speech."

This bill is overdue. I hope it *does* change things. They need changing.

kdsub -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/18/2012 7:43:59 AM)

Lucy I want a free and open internet as well...but I read the summary of the bill and could not see where it was doing anything but protecting copyrights.

I think the problem has always been the inability by law to control foreign sites that steal information and services and sell them for profit without recourse for the copyright holder. This bill will have no power over these foreign piracy sites but will require internet sites and services in the US to shut them out.

I'm not seeing anything wrong with that but if you have more information I really do want to hear it and understand why you are so against it.

This could help individuals as well as small and large businesses whose hard work is pirated

I think a better written law is long overdue. Laws like this can too easily ooze beyond the original intent.

When the income tax was originally proposed in the US, an opponent claimed that pressures to spend would eventually push the tax rate as high as 10%. He was laughed at.

I also left a creative business due to my inability to protect my content. Absolutely, we need copyright protection laws that encourage new content. But my trust in any government keeping within the original intent of the law is quite low. I would much prefer a more specific law that was a bit less capable of abuse.

or dont
your opinion is not one I trust or care to listen too
control and greed is what it is all about

kdsub -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/18/2012 8:03:28 AM)

Opinion is not the point...facts are...all I ask is why you are against it... what part of the bill affects you.

Yeah, like the greed I exhibited when I walked away from three internationally selling albums and a fourth in process because the majority of copies--yes, the majority--were pirated, while I was just covering my expenses.

Oh, excuse me...."just recycled."

Lucylastic -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/18/2012 8:09:04 AM)

then tell me what you dont understand.

I have come to dislike Obama and I still think this bill is disgusting.

kalikshama -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/18/2012 8:30:31 AM)

The natural conclusion of a SOPA discussion elsewhere: What if the internet was a real place?

Musicmystery -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/18/2012 8:31:11 AM)

Good for you. Excellent example of careful reasoning.
