hold me........, that level of sheer unadulterated ignorance, and WILLFUL ignorance at that level skeeeers me, because they are out there, passing their genes on.
But at least they DO serve as a warning for the rest of us

SilverBoat -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/19/2012 6:08:23 AM)

I think SOPA, as it was written so far, had too much potential for censorship that could be abused for political purposes by authoritarian (religious, conservative, merchantile, etc) groups. And the last I read about support for the bills, Obama's admin planned to veto the current forms.

That said, I'm also of the opinion that current privacy laws don't go far enough, that current copyright laws have ridiculous provisions, and even (at risk of angering people whose creative skills rate higher in their own minds than others') that the social paradigms about earning a living via 'artistic' ideas can have an aspect of 'entitlement' that parallels the financiers' ugliness. And then there's the whole constitutional thing, and whether persons (corporations, heirs, etc) deserve 75 years of  'copyright' profits.

Maybe the whole mess should start from another basis, the street-performers' metric: People pay the performers what they think the art deserves. And as much as I've heard specious arguments that cultures 'need' art, civilizations need work too. So if people aren't buying a person's self-defined 'creative' efforts, that person should be putting in some sweat at tasks that do earn some sheckels.

Yeah, I know that might p.o. some folks, but it's a consistent point of view. How much of modern 'popular' art, music, writing, etc is herd-mentality cult-of-personality profiteering to tried-n-true formulaic promotions, and not really all that creative? Monkeys, raccoons and crows exhibit fascination with shiny noisy objects too ... Just sayin ...

...

FR

Rupert Murdoch is in favour of SOPA.

Ah well, better luck next time with any proposed policy change, then.

Opinion is not the point...facts are...all I ask is why you are against it... what part of the bill affects you.

I like being able to use youtube therefore I'm against the bill.

From what I understand and have heard youtube has very strict copyright policies...How will it affect them?...Just try to upload a video with copyrighted music and see what happens.

Butch

Lucylastic -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/19/2012 12:38:05 PM)

ermmm that doesnt mean he cannot be against the bill
have you seen how many music videos there are on you tube?

stellauk -> RE: English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout (1/19/2012 1:17:03 PM)

I see Musicmystery's point but I am against SOPA and PIPA.

Why? It's unjust and unfair.

The entire premise is as if copyright infringement doesn't happen in the US..

I'm also going by the example of Youtube who believes US copyright law applies worldwide.

It doesn't. Perhaps before trying to tackle online piracy and theft perhaps Congress needs to consider bringing US copyright laws into alignment with international copyright legislation.

Otherwise you're going to end up with cases of people using materials under legitimate fair dealing legislation being unfairly dealt with because US copyright law differs in its interpretation of what is fair dealing. Those that stand to be affected are legitimate non-profit organizations.

However I agree that greater provisions need to be made to prevent theft, distribution and unauthorized use of creative works.

It might be just a song or photo to you, but most people have no idea how much work has gone into that work...

And furthermore it is our income. We have to live too.

I'm always a bit dubious of the whole "it's ripping off the poor artists!" argument for the simple reason that the people who are always complaining about that are no slouches at ripping off artists themselves. The RIAA are a case in point, and the BPI are almost as bad. When they knock it off with this "recoupable" shit, I might be willing to entertain the idea that they have their artist's best interests at heart, rather than trying to protect the intellectual property they've screwed out of the unfortunate bastards. Apart from histrionic shitweasels like Metallica, most bands seem to feel that a bit of online piracy compensates for a few lost sales by raising their profile, and might even sell a few CDs to people who've enjoyed the mp3s they've stolen.

Not according to Viacom:

"NEW YORK – A lawyer for Viacom warned an appeals court panel Tuesday that there will be greater exploitation of copyright material on the Internet if the court lets YouTube get away with a business built on "rampant copyright infringement."" http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/story/2011-10-18/viacom-google-youtube-lawsuit/50817760/1

I have read that people that will download pirated material would never have paid for it in the first place.. So either way the artist isnt gonna get money for it.. Imo that is true..

There is lots of music i would never pay for.. and any music i would pay for i already have paid for in the form of records and cds.. but I really dont even listen to music at all and havent for years.. i spend my time watching informative vids or shows (like on HGTV) instead.. Oddly enough.. there doesnt seem to be an outcry from those that made the shows and vids about people like me that record those vids and shows..

Yeah.

If you don't find it valuable, leave it be and turn to something you do find worthwhile.
