Some have said the US "owns the web". No matter how true, or not true, that statement is... someone will build a better mouse trap.

...the internet blackout did nothing

On that I'd disagree... when MAJOR sites went black (or emphasized the issue), I think it did a TON for exposing the issue to millions who knew NOTHING about the legislation?!!

I don't personally know what the right answer is... I mean, the owners of various intellectual property certainly have rights too, but not at the expense of having another's site immediately shutdown because Person/Business X merely alleges theft by Person/Business Y.  Like anything other legal matter, I feel it should decided by the Courts on a case-by-case basis.

Lucylastic -> RE: It's gonna be NASTY. (1/21/2012 2:10:56 PM)

Thats why so many " joined" in the protest.
Megauploads was just shut down
simply because they have servers in virginia.
even tho its based in NewZealand.
Why is SOPA needed when it just did what it did to MegaUploads???.
Not that I am justifying what megauplaoads was doing. Just a point to respond with:)

so then what is your solution, surely you don't think the agenda changes, only it's visibility, the internet blackout did nothing but increase the urgency that SOPA's continued push towards legality be hidden, and it has, the next vote on it will occur sometime in the near future, and the protest had no notable effect on PIPA (you know, the one that will effectively kill youtube and facebook as well as making the government capable of taking away the DNS address of a website worldwide) they aren't listening, they're just finding another way to wriggle it out of the public eye until it's too late to do anything about.

SOPA is dead...

PIPA is with it

Congress is looking for alternatives

Amazing how just 24 hours of protest from the internet made a whole Congressional membership sit up and take notice.

look at the details of what happened on any news outlet that isn't owned by one of the six major media corporations that control the majority of the published widely read news in the united states and you'll get what actually happened instead of sensationalism and smoke screen, if you'd like here are some links that can help you better understand why those statements just gave me a headache.

When you have the proof to debunk it... we will talk, until then have fun

I love the a priori nature of this write-up (everything listed is inherently good). It's almost as if things like, "Managed TARP", "Launched Piracy Crackdown" and "Imposed Sanctions" are a good thing.

There are many other things on this list that are patently ridiculous: "Re-establish the United States' standing in the world", "Helped stabilize Somalia with an executive order, "Imposed limits on lobbyists access to White House", "Unveiled initiatives to make men better fathers." This is all preposterous. Abominations like the Dodd/Frank Act and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act have not helped the economy either, and I haven't even addressed those.

However, if you like bills/actions like: The National Defense Authorization Act, the Patriot Act, keeping GITMO open, and Obama's willingness to invade more countries, then I'm sure Obama is making you proud!

Postponed indefinitely is a nice way of saying... Yep, we fucked up and that one will never see the light of day again.

Without backing for a majority vote, they wont even attempt it.

Trismagistus -> RE: It's gonna be NASTY. (1/21/2012 2:15:23 PM)

it's already been postponed indefinitely twice -_- I've been watching this since it began, nothing has changed other than the when.

Owner59 -> RE: It's gonna be NASTY. (1/21/2012 2:16:11 PM)

I think straight up law enforcement with police and the justice system is the way to go.

They won`t get every pirate every time....arrrrrrg!.[:D]....but at least we don`t have to deal with this new law/power over us.

outhere69 -> RE: It's gonna be NASTY. (1/21/2012 2:19:48 PM)

FR:
Since refinery operations and the laws of supply and demand often have more to do with gas prices than the price of crude, and the price of crude can swing due to market speculation by large trading firms, exactly how does a president have total control over gas prices?  No matter how hopeful folks may be, a president's approval of any offshore/arctic drilling would take years, if not a decade, to bring oil in.

To be honest, Owner, that was my major objection to this bill... the far reaching powers without due process.

you're still splitting hairs though, Obama, Bush, you can toss around names of politicians all you want, but you're just ignoring the elephant in the room, my point wasn't that Obama is a piece of shit or that all of our problems were caused by him, if anyone is attempting to strawman anyone else in this little scenario you've cooked up it's you, you're standing in the throne room of Oz talking to the giant green floating head like it means something when the only way to resolve the issue is to grab the guy behind the curtains and beat him to a pulp.
I tend to agree that some "unpleasantness" might be the only way to end the terminally corrupt inverted totalitarian state we are hostage to.

I disagree that the 2 parties are 2 sides of the same coin, however. Whilst they both are beholden to the 1%, the Dems will try to enact legislation which benefits the middle class and the poor. There is no such attempt at all by the NeoReps to address any of the problems the 99% face. In fact, they are contemptuous of the middle class, and completely hostile to the poor.

I would vote for a Green before I would vote for a Dem; that would be an affirming vote. And I will vote for a Dem before I will vote for a Rep. That is what I consider a negating vote; i.e., the lesser of two evils. I will never again vote for a Rep; I will not support a party that does not support me.

Just read that the cons are preparing for a possible open convention and plan on the primary going on till may.

[sm=popcorn.gif]

And just yesterday we had Mitt accusing newt of attacking free enterprise/capitalism itself........and used the phony "class warfare" charge against newt for dressing Mitt down about his abuses of our free market system.

Meanwhile loser Mitt is hoping no one notices that he`s the antithesis of capitalism and free markets.

Mitt is actually calling newty a OWSer and drawing a line claiming that he represents the 1%.

Newt is a multi-millionaire.. so yes, by defninition that qualifies him as one of the dreaded 1%...

Moonhead -> RE: It's gonna be NASTY. (1/22/2012 11:24:11 AM)

I thought that all of the nominees wanted to represent the 1%? That seems to be the biggest problem with state of the current GOP right there, frankly.

Owner59 -> RE: It's gonna be NASTY. (1/22/2012 11:32:37 AM)

True,though he is a 1%,newt`s using OWS arguements.

I should have been clearer that Mitt was talking about himself.

He now is pretending to be free enterprise's`s champion claiming that he`s not elected,we`ll decline further.

In a big way,the next election will be between the callous,abusive ,anti-capitalist/anti-free market wealthy and their duped minions and folks who want to get back to the post Great Depression regulated,fair and honest form of capitalism and prudent stewardship of our economy that built it to one of the greatest in history.
