I don't mean goth as in "Gee you're surprisingly cheerful for a gothgirl". I mean favourite piece of everything has Gone To Hell music. That one, or two songs that when the wheels are coming off your wagon, gets you back up on your feet with fight in your heart.

For me they're Veteran of the Psychic Wars by Blue Oyster Cult.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zt09A-Xd7o

and Invincible by Pat Benetar.

Anyone else want to share?

If nothing else is getting through, some Captain Beefheart will normally blow out the cobwebs. (I favour Safe As Milk over Trout Mask Replica, meself.)
The Fall are good for this as well. Few things can linger in your head for as long as the Mancunian Gollum's a list ranting. Hex Enduction Hour and Grotesque (After The Gramme) are the ones that have a bit more impact than the poppier '80s moments...

Moonhead, I'm going to have to wiki and youtube all of those, cos I didn't recognise a single one. That hasn't happened in a while. :-) Yay new musics to discover.

I forgot one though that gets this soldier up to shoot, shoot, shoot.  Indestructible by Disturbed.  I've bumped into friends on the street while I was singing that and not realising I was singing it. The usual response is something along the lines of "Fuck, is it REALLY that bad?"

Whenever I need some music to pick me up, a lot of stuff from the '80s usually works for me. Some Little Boots is great, especially Symmetry. Great track.

Tracks from the '80s that usually works are, amongst others:

Electric Dreams- Giorgio Moroder

Spit It Out- IAMX

Play God- Deathstars

Opheliac- Emelie Autumn

Twist and Shout- The Beatles

Flashlight- George Clinton

That's just some of the tunes that get me back on track.

Bob Marley - Small Axe

Labi Siffre - Something Inside So Strong

Motorhead - The Hammer

Alanis Morrisette - You Oughtta Know

A couple from Poland...(lyrics - translations added)

Perfekt - Ale W Kolo Jest Wesolo/Good To Be In The Circle

(a protest song from the times of martial law)

Komu auto, komu chate? [Who gets the car? Who gets the house?]
Komu awansowac tate? [Who gets their position from their father?]
Komu nie podawac reki? [Who don't you lend a hand to?]
Komu slowa do piosenki? [Who is this song written about?]

CHORUS
Ale w kolo jest wesolo [But it's great to be in the circle]
Czlowiek w pracy, malpa w zoo [Someone at work, monkey in a zoo]
Puste pole za stodola [Empty fields behind the barn]

Jak naprawde jest - nikt nie wie [What is really happening nobody knows]
Kornik ryje dziure w drzewie [The woodworm bites a hole in the tree]
Electronik kradnie w Tczewie [Electrician steals in Tczew]
A chlop pije - ale jazz [But the peasant drinks - how cool]

Z kim nie wolno pic, z kim gadac [Who can't you drink with, who can you talk to?]
Co w srody wolno jadac? [What are you allowed to eat on Wednesday?]
O kim milczec, o kim pisac? [Who do you keep quiet about, who do you write about?]
Kogo skarcic za Holdysa?[1] [Who gets the blame for Holdys?]

CHORUS

Kto jest winien, kto nie winien? [Who is guilty? Who is innocent?]
Kto na serce pasc powienien? [Who should die of a heart attack?]
Kto za utwor zas niniejszy [Who because of this song you're hearing]
Zespol nas uczyni mniejszym [Will cause our band to get smaller?]

CHORUS

[1] Holdys refers to Zbigniew Holdys the singer and leader of Perfekt who wrote the song.

O.N.A. (Agnieszka Chylinska - Nie To Nie/No Means No

{How about this for BDSM in a song?)

(lyrics)

Po co jestes ze mna [Why are you with me]
Kiedy kazdy z moich gest draznie Cie? [When everything I do bugs you?]
Po co jestes ze mna ]Why are you with me]
Kiedy nie pasuje Cie mojego ciala smak [When my body doesn't appeal to you?]
Po co jestes ze mna [Why are you with me?]
Skoro dawno juz przestalam bawic sie [Since for ages I haven't had fun]
Na wszystko mowisz [All you say is]
Nie [No]
Wiec jesli nie to nie [Then if no means no]
Nie [No]
Zaczynam dusic sie [I'm starting to suffocate]

Po co jestes ze mna [Why are you with me]
Gdy kazda chwile czujesz ze nienawidzisz mnie [Since you feel you hate me all the time]
Po co jestes ze mna [Why are you with me]
Kiedy juz przestales zauwazyc mnie [When you've stopped paying me attention]
Na wszystko mowisz [All you say is]
Nie [No]
Wiec jesli nie to nie [Then if no means no]
Nie [No]
Zaczynam dusic sie [I'm starting to suffocate]

Waruj u stop [Grovel at my feet]
Mam dosyc juz [I've had enough]
Ostrzegam Cie [I'm warning you]
Waruj u stop [Grovel at my feet]
Smycz krotko jest [This leash is short]
Nie szarpij sie [Don't fight yourself]

Po co jestes ze mna [Why are you with me]
Skoro dobrze wiesz ze czasem zdradzam Cie [Since you know very well that I cheat on you at times]
Po co jestes ze mna [Why are you with me]
Gdy zapomniales jak nazywam sie [When you've forgotten what I'm called]
Po co jestes ze mna [Why are you with me]
Kiedy mina oczym ze zabijasz mnie [When in your face I see you kill me with your eye]
Na wszystko mowisz [All you say is]
Nie [No]
Wiec jesli nie to nie [Then if no means no]
Nie [No]
Zaczynam dusic sie [I'm starting to suffocate]

Waruj u stop [Grovel at my feet]
Mam dosyc juz [I've had enough]
Ostrzegam Cie [I'm warning you]
Waruj u stop [Grovel at my feet]
Smycz krotko jest [This leash is short]
Nie szarpij sie [Don't fight yourself]
I grzeczny badz [And behave yourself]
Bo jesli nie [Because if you don't]
Czeka Cie kara [You will be punished]
Masz sluchac mnie [You have to listen to me]
Masz sluchac mnie [You have to listen to me]

REPEAT

I reckon Iggy's track New Values, the title track of his underrated 1979 album, is his top "I'm trying to sort myself out" themed track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=semcd13HJ-U and what a great riff!

Lick My Decals Off Baby.... great LP.

Beefheart...Moonhead, you're either old as the hills like me or retro-eclectic in your tastes!

Oh nice choices people. I spent my housework time this morning with everything in the background. The only problem is I may have developed an instant addicition to Captain Beefheart.

Nice! :-)

I asked Mistress about my "I'm having a bad day, do not fuck with me!" music and she said I missed two both by the same artist. Bif Naked.

I love myself today

and her version of...

We're not gonna take it.  (I'm such an 80's child.)

I usually think of Hendricks as a proto-goth. And not my scene, but still occassionally worth a listen to. Oh and for anyone with the inclination I just finished John Ringo's Hells Faire. And at the back of it is a soundtrack for the book, with nothing but "Oh crap we're all gonna die!" music. Lovely stuff, and a really good novel as well.

I adore Hendrix, myself. He did some amazing stuff.
One thing I would suggest is that you might be better off seeking out his second album (Axis Bold As Love), rather than Electric Ladyland or Are You Experienced. That's the one where he's showing off his songwriting. It's the one with all the ballads on it...
Castles Made Of Sand
Little Wing
His best ballad (and maybe his best song full stop) was one of the last singles and never wound up on album in his lifetime, though:
Angel
I wouldn't recommend the two live albums he did to get out of a recording contract (Band Of Gypsies and Live At The Apollo), as they're not even close to being a list Hendrix: apart from the stunning Machine Gun, both outstay their welcome. On the other hand, the current collections of stuff that he'd left in the can at his time of death (South Saturn Delta and First rays Of The New Rising Sun) are lovely. I'd also recommend Radio One (a collection of sessions the Experience did for British radio shows), which might be about the best single compilation of his stuff you can get, and Blues, which collects his bluesy songs and covers. If you're feeling down, that one can be very effective, and of course, that wonderful warm voice of his was perfectly suited to that stuff.

John Cale is another proto goth who hasn't been mentioned yet: few songs have quite as aggressive a "fuck you" swagger as this one:
Fear Is A Man's Best Friend

OMG I've been listening to that piece of music for about a year now and not knowing who it was. I actually love it. It's on three of my playlists.
