DarkSteven -> The possibility that the GOP does NOT want to face. (1/22/2012 9:11:48 AM)

All the current articles keep talking about who will end up with the majority of GOP electoral votes.  What if...

If NO candidate wins a majority of votes cast, it goes to multiple ballots.  That destroyed the Dems in 1968, and the Dems in 1968 were a lot stronger and more cohesive than the GOP is today.

The primary is damaging enough so far.  In order to attack Romney, Gingrich is turning the conventional GOP platform plank of free commerce on its ear.  He's also undermining the concept of capital gains being taxed less than ordinary income, by pointing out that Mitt pays only 15% taxes.  Ron Paul's supporters are complaining (correctly IMO) that Paul's not getting enough coverage.  Santorum's trying to establish himself as the sole true conservative and is trying to claim that a moderate would have no chance in the general.  In other words, each is peddling his peculiar brand of reality.  I expect Mitt to take off the gloves (har har) soon, and begin trashing Gingrich in negative ads.

Unless one of the Final Four withdraws, I expect Paul to pull in 10%-20%.  Santorum will pull 15%-25%.  That leaves Gingrich and Romney only 55%-75% between them, and it's not inconceivable that neither one will get the magic 50%.

I actually hope you are right...

Let's not forget that the messier this gets, the better chance that it gives birth to the independent candidacy of a disgruntled Dr.Paul....that is the real Republican nightmare .

outhere69 -> RE: The possibility that the GOP does NOT want to face. (1/22/2012 9:33:26 AM)

So far Gingrich is showing a great talent for skipping across ice floes.  He's a serial adulturer (is that a word?), which killed off Cain's run; he beats Mitt up for a 15% capital gains tax, which Newt negotiated with Clinton.  I'd think it would only be a matter of time before those things catch up with him.  You can't beat up the "liberal media" forever, even though it's been done since Agnew's time.

Yeah Newt is taking a lot of bites out of that particular apple...he did it again this morning on Meet The Press.

"Former party chairman says there’s now a 50-50 chance of a brokered GOP convention"

Michael Steele, the former Republican national chairman who oversaw the writing of the party’s nominating rules in 2010, told The Huffington Post Saturday night that the chances of an open — that is, undecided — GOP convention in Florida next August are now “50-50″ after Newt Gingrich’s victory in South Carolina.

I think Florida will tell the tale.

I'm hoping that Santorum will "see the light" and leave after not doing well there.

Right now, Romney is up in Florida, but the poll was before SC.  If Gingrich comes close to even, or wins, and Santorum doesn't reach double digits, then the momentum will stay with Newt.  Might be a long battle, with Paul as the spoiler, but after Santorum falls out, most of his support will go to Newt, I think.

There is an advantage to airing dirty laundry or candidate weaknesses this early: it gives the final winning candidate a chance to form and disseminate a response in time for the general, which is going to be dirty as hell.

What is Rick thinks that "light" is god telling him to plod on?

Lucylastic -> RE: The possibility that the GOP does NOT want to face. (1/22/2012 11:40:38 AM)

speaking of Rick
While the network news shows spend this Sunday marveling over Newtmentum in South Carolina, Rick Santorum will quietly make his first stop in Florida, site of the next primary on January 31. He'll be dropping in to see the honorary chairman of his state campaign—a Bush-connected Islamophobic pastor who says gays "make God want to vomit."

Santorum, the other conservative darling in the Republican presidential race, plans to speak from the pulpit at the Worldwide Christian Center in Pompano Beach on Sunday morning. It might seem a strange stop for a white Catholic Republican from the Northeast: While the ocean-facing side of Pompano is affluent and conservative, WWC literally sits on the wrong side of the tracks in the Collier City neighborhood—a poor, tight-knit African American district that swung strongly for Barack Obama in 2008. But WWC is different: It's run by the Rev. O'Neal Dozier, a firebrand social conservative who's tried to turn this depressed community red, and has been rewarded handsomely by Republican politicians for his efforts.

Dozier opened his church in 1985 and immediately began preaching a different kind of gospel. "We teach and preach on the cultural issues," he says in a recent video. "We also teach and preach on the war on terror. We teach and preach on the dangers of Islam and Islamic fascism here." He says he was heavily influenced by the work of the Rev. D. James Kennedy, a founding father of the Christian right who started the annual Reclaiming America for Christ political conference at his church complex just down the street in Fort Lauderdale.

Question.

As of now, does the RNC rule changes designed to extend the primary season seem like a good idea?

Multi-faceted question with no clear answer at the moment.

SilverBoat -> RE: The possibility that the GOP does NOT want to face. (1/22/2012 12:08:05 PM)

At this point, it looks like the GOP convention/nomination still has much to be decided. The mass-media (who being owned by rightwingers, aren't really leftist, but that's a whole 'nother topic) have been ordered to play up the GOP narrative, hype whatever subplot dujour they can convolute into juvenile dramatification.

The GOP sees that as pounding its !Attack-Obama! 'message in the idiot-boxeds' consciousness, aiming for long term effects. It's possible that will fade or backfire. It's also quite possible that Paul will do a Perot, Nader, etc, if they don't toss him sufficient bones at the convention.

So far, how many registered Rips have voted their preference for nominee? Less than a million, out of how many registered? Maybe 2%, and all the camps are declaring victory, momentum, etc?

Blah ... But, yeah, the scenarios are multiplex. Paul running as independent would probably settle November's results.

Until something resembling humane sanity returns to the GOP, though, their implosion might be the best thing for the nation, and for them.

I've long ago come to the conclusion that the system is so twisted that it is unlikely that it can be "fixed" through the normal political process (possible, just unlikely), and therefore - since I believe in the concepts of creative destruction - that an implosion could be the only thing that returns a chance for a better system.

Under that belief, the implosion of the GOP would give the other side the ability to run the rest of the government and society into the ground, and cause an explosive counter-reaction.

So, I win either way.  [8D]

While it's messy, and perhaps not at all what the GOP intended (other than to placate its conservatives), it *is* democracy.

True.

But it is suppose to be a Republic.

That is what we have.

A republic is a form of government in which the people, or some significant portion of them, have supreme control over the government and where offices of state are elected or chosen by elected people.
