quote:
I am not of the Gingrich moonies in any way shape or form. Nor am I an advocate of colonialism or imperialism in any way shape or form, our good friends the English have pretty much exhausted the research on that one and found the thing wanting. We need to keep our eye on the ball here, get this right, then we can cast our eyes heavenword. We will NEVER get it right! That is the problem. We (by which I mean the whole mass of humanity) can't even agree on what "right" is, much less how to achieve it. Can we make things better than they are? Sure... but we will never have perfection (the perfect is the enemy of the good), especially if people continue to falsely believe that we can legislate our way to utopia. We can't. No social/economic system devised by people will ever achieve perfection because those systems are designed by people. The problem lies in human nature, the human heart. Weren't you paying attention when the Lord of the Flies was laying it all out for Simon? "I'm part of you! Close ! Close! Close!" Until (if) humanity evolves enough so that we overcome our tribal outlook (us good, them bad), or rather, until we can look upon all humanity as our tribe... we will continue much the same way we have - badly. Despite that we have shown an ability to dare mighty deeds and I see no reason why we should not. Even if we do not reach our destinations at first, the journey itself will yeild its own rewards. Perhaps we will even learn something new - about ourselves or the nature of reality - that will help us improve as a species. Settling for the status quo while imagining some heaven on earth is awaiting us (once we get the "right" people elected and the "right" laws passed ) will get us nowhere. But some people are bound and determind to have things their way. As I see it, not only is the "let's solve our problems here first," attitude unimaginative, it is also selfish ("I must be satisfied before anyone else can dream") and arrogant ("look how wonderfully moral I am"). Patooie!
