How about using the same level of intense government input into creating an alt-energy sourced energy-independence-mission......much like the moon mission?

We could create an enormous solar power station on the moon and beam the power back to Earth.

Green energy AND a moon colony! Win-win!

Much easier and more practical from Geocentric Earth orbit.

The moon is in a Geocentric Earth orbit.

Do you mean Geostationary?

Correct, Not enough coffee yet.

Doesn't solar power already beam to earth?

Not in a concentrated form. Also because of atmosphere and weather it is not a reliable, constant source for energy production.

And yet storing and transporting it from the moon is more efficient....

I think the inner nerd in most of us would love to see it happen.
But first , ignoring the perils of earthbound civilisation is more important and just trying to hijack the real needs for the people who need jobs n housing and healthcare and happiness with the ability to chase that dream.
Pie in the sky is a wonderful way to ignore the stench of reality

The problem with that is, if you wait until all of the social and economic problems on Earth are solved before colonizing the solar system, then we will never colonize the solar system.

So we should move out of the caves despite the social and economic problems we have here?

If we wait to solve all our problems, NOTHING would ever be accomplished.  The "we have to wait until everything is made perfect" attitude is, as far as I'm concerned, the attitude of the unrealistic, the unimaginative, the cowardly and the cynical.

I am not of the Gingrich moonies in any way shape or form.   Nor am I an advocate of colonialism or imperialism in any way shape or form, our good friends the English have pretty much exhausted the research on that one and found the thing wanting.

We need to keep our eye on the ball here, get this right, then we can cast our eyes heavenword.

dont be facetious
you dont think AMERICA has enough REAL problems with the economy and the poor underemployed and sick, to necessitate action HERE?, let alone the rest of the world.

You cant or wont fix issues in your own country but the moon thing gives you a *we can do that* hard on or a light at the end of the tunnel? talk about being unrealistic and cowardly *from your post number 47*.

We will NEVER get it right!  That is the problem.  We (by which I mean the whole mass of humanity) can't even agree on what "right" is, much less how to achieve it.  Can we make things better than they are?  Sure... but we will never have perfection (the perfect is the enemy of the good), especially if people continue to falsely believe that we can legislate our way to utopia.  We can't.  No social/economic system devised by people will ever achieve perfection because those systems are designed by people.

The problem lies in human nature, the human heart.  Weren't you paying attention when the Lord of the Flies was laying it all out for Simon?  "I'm part of you!  Close ! Close!  Close!"  Until (if) humanity evolves enough so that we overcome our tribal outlook (us good, them bad), or rather, until we can look upon all humanity as our tribe... we will continue much the same way we have - badly.

Despite that we have shown an ability to dare mighty deeds and I see no reason why we should not.  Even if we do not reach our destinations at first, the journey itself will yeild its own rewards.  Perhaps we will even learn something new - about ourselves or the nature of reality - that will help us improve as a species.  Settling for the status quo while imagining some heaven on earth is awaiting us (once we get the "right" people elected and the "right" laws passed ) will get us nowhere.

But some people are bound and determind to have things their way.  As I see it, not only is the "let's solve our problems here first," attitude unimaginative, it is also selfish ("I must be satisfied before anyone else can dream") and arrogant ("look how wonderfully moral I am").

Patooie!

I am not a utopian, and I am not lassize-faire.  Knowing human nature, we know where we got to build the fences.   We have fucked up a great deal of shit over the last 20-40 years, and seems like we are (if we actually have the will) able to clean it back up.

Okay, presume rivers flow uphill everywhere and dogs start fucking cats, oh and Newt gets elected. GOOD FUCKING LUCK WINNING A SECOND TERM NEWT!
After 4 years of Gingrich, Newt is going to NEED a 51st state to even stand a chance of being elected. And with a NASA personnel filter, he can hand select the population and guarantee a landslide in that state.
Sure it's a crazy idea. But not NEARLY as crazy as a Gingrich Presidency.

I'm not really sure what this means.

Bullshit!  I'm not the one dangling a fantasy in front of people.  You just need to watch any political debate to see that ("just elect me and things will get better").

Exactly my point!  All of our social engineering bullshit has led nowhere because reality keeps trumping us!  So while we are busy dicking around trying to figure out why this tax increase or that new regulation did not produce the result we wanted and who is to blame (it is them, of course), why not continue on and do what humans do manage to do well: explore!

The earliest humans crossed mountain ranges for a very simple reason... to see what was on the other side!  Where would we be if they hadn't done that?

If you are so bound and determined to meet the needs of the people before we dream and explore, then we should not allow government funding of anything that does not meet those needs!  No funding for the arts!  No funding for public parks!  Etc.  Is that realistic?  I don't think so but that is the logical course your "thinking" leads to.

While there might be certain benefits to spreading industry out of Earth's gravity well, it's going to be stupidly expensive.
That's a social problem that needs addressing before anything is done about this, as on past form, any US government funded moon research is not going to have any real long term effects besides wasting money.
