I think you're predicting the republican ticket here, Newton Gingrich / Yusuf Islam in 2012.

noble..nope, I do it because Ive been there. It is quite simple. That you have to belittle it, is just what I expected.
Solving our problems here IS helping people. Jobs, healthcare, housing, mending infastructure. It all benefits people, but its boring and doesnt give people a hard on.
Ive been accused of being nothing but a dreamer, an idealogue. I get laughed at for trying to make a difference. Derision from you is water off a ducks back.
Take the piss all you want.. ignoring problems by fantasising is how we got into this shit mess in the first place

You expected that from me?  How disappointing.  I thought you knew me better than that.  I am NOT belittleing helping people (on the contrary I fully believe in getting actively involved in local charities like food pantries and clothes closets, etc).  What I belittle is the notion far too many people have that just by saying something in any way helps (other than to give themselves an ego stroke).  Its well and fine to say that we should help people but unless you're down in the trenches... it is meangingless.

I agree 100%  What I don't understand is the notion that we can't improve such things and still dare mighty deeds.  Why are the two considered mutually exclusive?  Are we really that limited as a species?

Who hasn't?  I seem to recall getting accused of being a dreamer a little earlier in this thread.  It kind of got my dander up which is why I responded in kind (I never exempt myself from being human).

Cool and refreshing?  I seriously doubt that.  I think you more likely found it to be insulting and it got your dander up.  I am sorry I belittled you but geeze, give me a little credit in return, will ya?

How we got into this mess in the first place is by being human.  Space exploration is not a fantasy.  It is a real possibility with the potential for long lasting benefits for humanity.  What we lack is the will.  I simply do not see how restricting ourselves, our quest for knowledge, will benefit us.  We tried that once before and the result was the Dark Ages (Christianity... now that's a fucking fantasy!).

I'd be all for an international space agency with the goal of returning us to the Moon and from there onto Mars... but, alas, I'm just a dreamer.

What purpose would that serve, besides wasting money?
Unless either could be colonised (which is a long fucking way off, however much Robert Heinlein Gringrich has read) there's no point going.

Colonization would be the goal.  As for what purpose it would serve... jobs, advances in technology, international co-operation (perhaps if humanity were engaged in such a venture we'd be less likely to kill each other), advances in our knowledge (of the solar system, its origins, the origins of the universe, etc).  Mostly, though, the advantage would be in being something better than we are.  We can sit on this planet and stagnate or we can reach for something more.

Colonisation is not a goal any government is going to spring for, I'm afraid. You're talking about centuries of work before anybody can live up there without regular supply runs.

Centuries of work?  That's debatable, but even so, what's wrong with that.  One of humanities problems is its inability to pursue long term goals.  The key is to go in small steps.  First permanante orbital stations, followed by a small base on the moon which can be expanded.  More bases can be added.  Mining and energy production can help offset cost (maybe even turn a profit).  Once we've established ourselves there and a trip to the moon is as routine as a flight across the ocean then we can start looking toward Mars, building the ships we need in orbit.  Again we start out small, establishing a few outposts, making them as independent as possible, expanding them, etc.

Mining and energy production is pretty much the only justification for such a programme that can be found at the moment, rather than a cost offset, I'd have thought.
The problem with a long term goal that's going to take over a single lifetime is (as you say) human nature.

What?  Are we looking to mine gold on the moon to go back on the standard when Ron Paul has to take over cuz Newt can only do the two terms?

If so, then I might still be against it.

The moon is rich in gold deposits (which I'm sure HG Wells would find very amusing), but as that's value is defined by its scarcity, The Conspiracy probably wouldn't want too much of it importing. The other minerals the moon's supposed to be rich in could be handy, though. They reckon there's probably a lot of copper and aluminium up there, for a start. That'd be handy as the price of copper has been rising steeply and it's only going to get harder to mine in future.

Actually, Helium-3 is the most likely substance to be mined on the moon. The Chinese, Indians and Russkies are aparently in the planning stages.
