How about giving potential investors a financial incentive to take crazy risks with their money? Say, a 15% tax rate on the ones that pay off, maybe?

How about, when the time comes, we waive the years of study and lawsuits over what impact a 10-mile runway complex is going to have on the turtles? How about the lowest priority of the engine designers is the greenhouse gas emissions?

I guess that's an artful combination of both.

Some. This thing might never work. They might never see a dime of return, or even lose the whole wad they put in. If you think you are going to get nailed with the taxes too, if it does pay off, then why? Just leave it right where it is.

How about using the same level of intense government input into creating an alt-energy sourced energy-independence-mission......much like the moon mission?


There`s many ways to become a world leader other than letting things sit as they are.

I'm not sure if we are looking at the same page, Muse. If the companies fail to make any money, or fail outright, the investors either gain nothing for their investment, or lose some to all of it. On top of that risk, should we disincentivize them further with high taxes on whatever they might get back, if a daring investment pays off?

I make no claims to knowing the tax code well enough to say you can't find a write-off somewhere in it, but if you had your whole retirement in Solyndra, you're pretty well fucked. If you had 12% there, well at least the rate is low on the municipal bonds, but we ain't going to Bermuda in February.
