P.S. Aswad, is this the video you saw? Can't say that I've seen many of the videos. Incidentally, 'soldatkanalen' is widely regarded as one of the best amateurs in producing promotional and tributary(sp?) material for the Norwegian armed forces. He made the first one, which is largely based on the official archives. The pics the troops bring home tend to be more interesting, since they're usually more spontaneous. While the official media material includes an occasional lucky shot, it's often more polished. The less polished stuff is posted on forums and personal pages. If you're refering to the pic I posted, it's from the media archives. quote:
There seems to be a lot of rivalry between Norway and Sweden. There's a fair bit of rivalry between Norway, Sweden and Denmark, yes. Mostly friendly, these days. quote:
I don't believe Norway in in the E.U. correct? Yeah, we only have their laws, not a say in the decision-making process. Comes with being a member of the EEC/EFTA, while we've declined membership in the EU itself twice by general election. Course, the vote was entirely based on FUD, like most politics that get run by the general population here, so we are living to regret it. Being the "only" country on the outside isn't always beneficial, especially since we're about the only other country than Germany that could've shrugged at the economic side of things, if for another reason. quote:
You're better off, if you were you'd be supporting Greeks who think Mercedes Benzes grow on trees! We're paying for them. Everyone is. We're choosing to pay extra. It's only money. We've got plenty of that, with a solid surplus on the budget, savings in the oil fund, and so on. Spending it in the domestic market would just push the index up, so it's best spent abroad anyway. Collapsing countries is bad for business; it's got nothing to do with bailing them out and everything to do with covering our own asses. quote:
And here's another one with Norwegian women in all branches of the military. They seem to be "fully integrated" in the Norwegian military even more so than the U.S. One would hope so, given that we opened the armed forces to women in '38. Around '85, the last major restrictions outside the Navy were removed, and in '95 we removed the restrictions on submarines, with Lt. Cmdr. Krey being the first woman to command one. The infantry has been open to women more or less continuously, with several serving in front line combat roles during WW2. With the role models in place, it's a lot easier to recruit. We've also been running camps where young women can sample various aspects of life in the different branches of the armed forces, and talk to people who have made that career choice. Women who have what it takes to thrive in that environment are encouraged to enlist, and overall, about 7% of the active personell are women. I even think there were a handful of them in the video of the "To Valhalla" rally. Health, al-Aswad.
