Judging by what he said in the clip, he just liked it for its entertainment value rather than because it carried any sort of religious or political message...

Doesn't surprise me.  If I were a Mormon, I would LOVE Scientology.  It is the only religion around with a stranger mythology.  It is almost like the LDS church invented Scientology to make themselves look more main stream.

I like the caveat,"I`m not in favor of his "religion" by any means but ".........which pops seemed to have missed completely.

The two "religions" have striking similarities.......

Not the least being the level to which a member must comply with and defend the dogmas.

Brunch, does it make it worse?
What if President Pantload said he liked it for it's entertainment value, would (that) make it better?

er... yes surely it does? If he took the text seriously then I agree that would be cause for worry but he said it was fun science fiction while pointing out that he didn't like the religion. Hubbard's books have been turned into films, partly of course because scientologists are behind them but also because they made an OK transition to screen.

Obama wouldn't have read the fucking stupid shit.  So, he wouldn't have an opinion.

BoxwineForBrunch -> RE: romney's favorite book is battlefield earth by l ron hubbard (2/8/2012 11:53:39 AM)

it might make it a little worse, yeah. i mean it's a bloody atrocious book. if he liked it for religious reasons at least he'd have the excuse that his martian god(s) would smite him for not reading it.

sorry, bro, but i think both tribes of american politicians are full of vicious shitbirds and capitalist stooges so you can't play the "oh yeah well what about nobama rofl lol lmao *eyeroll*" game.

Oh boy, here's an L.Ron Hubbard fan. They even have the same first name.
How many flying saucers have you spotted up there in the last week?
Did I see you on t.v. at the Ron Paul rally?

Owner59 -> RE: romney's favorite book is battlefield earth by l ron hubbard (2/8/2012 11:58:46 AM)

Hey pops,if a candidate said he prefered Mad Magazine over Time or US News & World Report......that wouldn`t matter?

Is your bias that blind?

No, just saw a bit of it and thought it was crap but I rarely watch sci-fi so not much of an expert on that. Anyway any sci-fi would surely compare poorly with Earth Girls Are Easy? [:D]

I never read any of Hubbard's work. Woundn't waste my time with all the great threads to read on CM [8D] but taste in art (or whatever you want to call it, "sh-art" for example) is surely a very subjective thing.

Rons first name is Lafayette?

I did not know.

it's an amazing book. i picked up a copy in a small town grocery town when i was 15 and my family was driving up the coast to the summer place. within about 20 miles i was laughing so hard my mom was afraid i was going to have an asthma attack. reading selected passages aloud kept us all in stitches most of the way to kennebunkport.

Must check it out for its comedic value so. IMHO there is something about books or films that are so bad they actually become good...

farglebargle -> RE: romney's favorite book is battlefield earth by l ron hubbard (2/8/2012 12:13:49 PM)

It's a rough read. The author suffers from not having an editor with the balls to tell him when he's full of shit.

My first name is not L.  Other than that....epic failure.

No, "L" is an initial not a name.

Now if Mitt likes "science fiction" then surely he's read; "Earth in the Balance" by..........Al Gore!
