I don't hate rich people per se but I do "hate" it when they influence our govt. and laws using their riches like for all those rotten "free-trade" deals.

You do realize that wealthy people, mostly men, have been 'influencing' our government since our country's inception don't you?

People who slurp at the government (taxpayer paid) trough influence is way more. Have you noticed just how many now slurp?

This made me giggle.

What i am about to write has nothing to do with him being a rap artist (i detest it), being black (ha.), or whatever.

#1, he came from the projects. its not that he "likes" poor people, he was one of them.

#2, the hospital accommodated them. who should you really be mad at here? hospitals don't have to do that.

#3, him and his wife are famous. you sir, are not. have you seen how vicious paparazzi can be? why the heck would you want to risk tons of people flashing bulbs in your newborn's face after your wife just gave birth? tmz and tabloids don't have common courtesy.

#4, while you may have a point about him donating money from the shirts, but people bought them under their own free will. And nowhere did he or company reps say they would donate the money. So people bought those shirts knowing that no donations would be made for the movement. Again, who should you be mad at here? Even if he did donate 100% of the profits, he would get a VERY nice tax break that may rival the profit he would have pocketed from the shirts.

Your hatred seems to be a bit misguided.

I don't hate rich people...in fact, we should be encouraging people to be rich...what I do hate are rich-politicians--the kennedys/the kerrys--pretending to be for the middle class when they hide their taxes with loopholes when they vote to raise their own taxes. And, I always hate rich politicians pandering down to me that I need their help--through raising taxes which ultimately leads to higher unemployment. And I also hate rich politicians who encourage people to be lazy and collect "benefits" when they should be encouraging them to succeed in their own American dream. And I especially hate rich people like Jay-Z who claim to like poor people when he shuts down the entire wing of a hospital just because he wants to see his own child and not allow others to see theirs. And, I especially hate rich people like Jay-Z who prints and sell "Occupy" T-shirts without donating any of the profits to the people he claims to represent. And I despise rich politicians who claim they are for the middle class when they bail out rich banks, Wall Street, and their union buddies at the expense of real "working" people. Do I need go on?

ETA: List of charities that Jay Z is involved in on a regular basis:

Artists for Peace and Justice
Boys' and Girls' Clubs of America
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS
Grammy Foundation
Music for Relief
PlayPumps
Red Cross: made a $1 Million donation to victims of hurricane Katrina. Yeah...he really hates poor people.

When wealth can be evidenced to influence politics, it's easy to hate on those who have it. Since the masses don't have a lot of disposable income or accumulated wealth sitting in Swiss Banks, I understand the sentiment. Anger is a pretty good disguise for jealousy and envy and I'm sure that 'is' a part of it for some people but there are those who are feeling disenfranchised and that can lead to feeling demoralized, especially if you haven't had a job for several months or even a couple of years.

The question shouldn't be about hating on the rich. That's understandable and somewhat inevitable and, of course, Obama doesn't hate on the rich at all. He is rich and despite what the USA is going through, still the single most powerful man on the planet with the largest cache of weapons at his disposal and the means to deploy them. Paul asked a gnat question. Eh, it's cool that he asked it. It's just as cool to walk up to someone on the opposite side of the fence and ask them..

"Do you hate all the poor, or just the ones you can't control?"

You were closer than you thought, Bita.

"I have a question, a question for the president: Do you hate all rich people, or just rich people who don't contribute to your campaign?" Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said at CPAC today.

"Do you hate poor people or do you just hate poor people with jobs?" Paul also asked.

There but by the grace of......but no. MOST of us are in the life situations we are in because of the choices we've made.

I don't envy or hate those that made good choices that led to their riches and I don't often feel sorry for those that made poor choices that led to them being in dire straights.

And exactly what is 'flaunting it' to you?

Before the last 5 years, I would have agreed with you. Many are now in the positions they are in through no fault of their own. They got up, went to work, did their jobs, came home, saved money, educated their kids... ect ect ect. Many of whom lost those jobs, and subsequently their savings, along with their retirements in some cases, due to nothing more than the greed of others.

Maybe yes, and other times maybe no. How I would feel about any one situation is going to depend entirely on that situation.

Example....."Oh no I am upside down in my mortgage and now I cannot afford my house, nor sell it." There are a lot of choices that may not have been good choices that led up to that situation.

There are a lot of choices that may not have been good choices that led up to that situation.

People's choice at the voting booth of politicians who subsequently deregulated the financial industry into near economic oblivion of the country not least among them.

Not everyone who lost such significant home value and deterioration of retirement funds fell into that situation from direct choices, the phenomenal job of the media in propagating that myth notwithstanding.

In that vein, we could say that someone who's choice to build or buy a house in a historically tornado free zone is at fault (indeed, made an 'irresponsible choice') for the resulting damage if a tornado (against all expert predictions, based on professional advice) in fact comes along and destroys the house. The analogy is not perfect, being as that in the case of the economic event resulting in the destruction at issue the cause was not natural but man-made, an exogenous event called 'financial innovation.'

I should have read the link.. or maybe not. The first question is a gnat question.

To ask Obama the second question though, to me, is intellectually dishonest. How he can believe that Obama is the 'socialist' and then ask if he hates the poor or only the working poor does not compute. Those two concepts rather contradict one another.

this is going to be just as counterproductive as a means of attacking obama as it was when it was used to attack clinton. both clinton and obama loved rich people. both are running dog imperialists and yellow bellied capitalists to the core. both make hypocritical noises about class warfare but then govern in favor of the banks and the upper middle class. when republicans started going after clinton for being a "class warrior" it backfired.

people who live and die by the bottom line are really good at knowing who is actually governing in their best interest and who is not. they may talk shit about social issues, and they may get a sour taste in their mouths when they vote for neoliberals, but they also know that the democratic party is as much on their side as the republicans are. other than some cosmetic changes (protip: much as some bankers whine now it will only be a matter of months before they find workarounds for the bans on prop trading and fancy derivatives) obama has been just as investment bank friendly as gwb or clinton before him (protip: ignore the rhetoric from both sides, look at the appointments he has made to, er, "regulate" the industry). obama jerks off thinking about drone strikes on underdeveloped nations and he has jacked up defense spending enough to make ronnie reagan (a man obama says he admires) grin from the grave. the people who are actually benefiting from obama's policies know they're benefiting, and though they make look for leverage to bleed everybody even drier and make a lot of noise in the media, they're happy with how things are going. if you have any doubts, follow the campaign contributions in the next cycle and note that the banks will be throwing just as much cash at obama as they will at romney (spoiler warning romney will be the nominee).

some of the sad suck-offs who are trying to screw up the cognitive dissonance to convince themselves obama really gives a shit about poor people so they can vote for him hear this rhetoric and they start to believe it. they think if the republicans are attacking obama harshly for being a "class warrior" then he must be doing something right. they need to believe in obama as something other than a corporatist shitbird with social stances that are maybe ten degrees left of center if the wind is north by northwest. they need to believe he is really on the side of the little guy, and rhetoric like this helps assuage their consciences.

basically accusing obama of being a class warrior does not cost him any support and may gain him a little traction among the more naive elements of the left who really want to think of themselves as leftists but want to vote for what is a center right democratic party. rhetoric like this helps people who already hate obama stroke their hate boners but who gives a fuck? if you want to really get these people in a lather, just drop some racist dog whistling and really slather on the homophobia and jesus bullshit.

of course for rand paul personally it's all about getting namechecks and head shots on the political shows and airtime on talk radio. he's bright enough to know the window on his political "relevancy" is closing fast but if he makes the most of the time he has in the spotlight he can ride the fringe-of-respectability gravy train for decades with speaker fees, guest courses at expensive and terrible conservative colleges, and posh jobs at right wing think tanks.

Not one bit. It'll be ignored. Just like any other question of it's caliber. For instance questions like: "When will you set the Greylians at area 51 free?".

What I truly CAN'T believe is that it didn't directly trigger an audience-wide walkout. I would be completely insulted if I attended a party rally and it got that dumb and petty.

Remember when Obama was still running for the democratic nomination and there was an influx of videos asking middle america what they thought of him?

It was made VERY clear that nobody knew what socialism was.

For reference:

Market Socialism: The Debate Among Socialists
, by Schweickart, David; Lawler, James; Ticktin, Hillel; Ollman, Bertell. 1998.

From "The Difference Between Marxism and Market Socialism" (P.61-63):

"More fundamentally, a socialist society must be one in which the economy is run on the principle of the direct satisfaction of human needs...Exchange-value, prices and so money are goals in themselves in a capitalist society or in any market. There is no necessary connection between the accumulation of capital or sums of money and human welfare. Under conditions of backwardness, the spur of money and the accumulation of wealth has led to a massive growth in industry and technology ... It seems an odd argument to say that a capitalist will only be efficient in producing use-value of a good quality when trying to make more money than the next capitalist. It would seem easier to rely on the planning of use-values in a rational way, which because there is no duplication, would be produced more cheaply and be of a higher quality."

I agree, which is why I said many and not all. I have no sympathy for people who lost money on paper and are complaining their homes are no longer worth the amount as before, while sipping their 5 o'clock beverage and gazing at their stock portfolios.
