I was not confused I was pointing out that you were mistaken in your statement that carrieres are named for presidents.
Now you know.

And again, what if Giffords was hit by a car?
Stennis and Vinson didn't get ships named after them because they were hit by cars, shot or stabbed by leftie maniacs did they?

They were also not in the military which you said was a requirement.
Now you know

And no, I didn't say, "silver star or purple heart, did i? Nice try.

No, I said that kerry qualified by your criteria. In the military and decorated hero.

Does not compute Dr. Smith.

That is because you are ignorant of the facts.
Now you know.

I have nothing but the highest regard for Congresswoman Giffords but getting shot like that isn't even on the same plane as someone who's been shot in combat.

Since you have never been shot at let alone hit so you have no clue.
Given your choice of fmj or the hp she got tagged with which would you choose?

Have a nice day Twisty.

So nice of you to give me a nick name after all these years...I guess I could return the favor...how bout from now on I refer to you as punk ass motherfucker...do you really want to go there?

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, still recovering from a shot through the brain, was informally awarded another Purple Heart on Wednesday.

Army veteran Al Lee said that Giffords deserves the honor.

"She was injured in the line of duty," he said.

"I wanted her to have it because of her strong support of veterans and her ability to always recognize a military servicemember such as myself," Lee said.

Lee, who was awarded the medal after being wounded in Fallujah, Iraq, in Sept. 2003, presented his Purple Heart challenge coin to Pam Simon, Giffords' community outreach director, on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — This is true: Gabe Zimmerman, community outreach director for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, was shot to death while working as a congressional aide.
This is true, too: He was not the first Capitol Hill staffer killed in the line of duty.

The marines are not part of the navy and never have been.

They get their paychecks from the Navy.

No they do not.
They get their paycheck from the department of the navy.

Yes, yes, they do.

Yes. They are called Marines.

Yes there is a difference between the navy department and the department of the navy. If you are unaware of what that difference is then perhaps you should disabuse yourself of your ignorance.

Roll call: Secretary of the Army, Secretary of the Air Force, Secretary of the Navy. . . yep! We are all here. "Where is the marines? Oh, they are with the Navy. OK then."

to expand on this:

he said the USMC is the war machine of the Navy. WHile the USMC does have the essentials for the field (i.e. medics, etc), essentially all their non-combatant support is from the Navy (i.e. mechanics/hospitals/etc etc).

So, the Navy has two overall functions, it sounds like: not only doing their OWN Naval thing, but acting as sea/land based support for the USMC.

Ahem

In the civilian leadership structure of the United States military, the Marine Corps is a component of the United States Department of the Navy, often working closely with U.S. naval forces for training, transportation, and logistic purposes; however, in the military leadership structure the Marine Corps is a separate branch.

edited again.

no, I hadn't misread.

Tazzy, apparently that is not common knowledge among the rank and file of the USMC.

I guess I can kind understand the misunderstanding, since the Marines I have dealt with in my job use either official gov't travel cards or Navy Federal cards.

United States Marine Corps

In 1834, the Marines came under the Department of the Navy. Historically, the United States Navy has had a unique relationship with the United States Marine Corps (USMC), partly because they both specialize in seaborne operations. Together the Navy and Marine Corps form the Department of the Navy and report to the Secretary of the Navy. However, the USMC is considered to be a distinct, separate service branch with its own uniformed service chief - the Commandant of the Marine Corps (CMC), a four star general.

The Navy and Marine Corps have a distinct relationship, the USMC depends on the Navy for religious support (i.e. chaplains) and medical support (i.e., dentists, medical doctors, medics known as "Corpsmen" and medical service staff); thus officers and enlisted sailors from the Navy fulfill these roles. When attached to Marine Corps units deployed to an operational environment they generally wear Marine camouflage uniforms, but otherwise they wear Navy dress uniforms unless they opt to conform to USMC grooming standards (appearance).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy#United_States_Marine_Corps

I see the Marines as being both... independent yet reliant upon others for the services they do not provide themselves (medical, religious, ect)

Greedy, please see an earlier post of mine to get a feel for how the Marines"traditionally" feel about the "service and support" the Navy supplies to the Green Machine....lol.It is a honest to god true story and an historical black mark for the U.S. Navy.

I can't get over the feeling that many of those who are objecting to the naming of the ship after Giffords regret, in the blackness of their partisan political hearts, that she survived the assassination attempt. After all, she was (and still is) a liberal Democrat and the only correct punishment (in their heart-of-hearts) for the "treason" of being a liberal Democrat should be death.

Roll call joint chiefs of staff...army,navy,airforce,coast guard, marine corps. If the marine corps was part of the navy why would the marines be on the joint chiefs?

Have you let them know this? The Marines seem to think that they got formed in 1775.

That would be the continental marines who were disbanded in 1783. No commandant of the marine corps and no marine corps from 1783 to 1798 when congress authorizes a batallion of marines for president adams.

The Commandant of the Marine Corps reports directly to the United States Secretary of the Navy.
sec nav is a civilian not a sailor.

Have you told the Marines yet? Because they really need to take that off of their sigil.

The department of the navy is not the same as the navy department. The navy (ships and sailors) are the navy deprtment. The navy department and the marine corps are co-equal branches of the department of the navy. The navy department was created by the constitution and can be disbanded only by a constitutional ammendment. The marine corps was created by an act of congress and can be disbanded by an act of congress.
The president must ask congress for permission to use the navy or the army or the airforce. The president only has to ask the commandant of the marine corps for permission to use the marine corps. The commandant of the marine corps is appointed by the president.
