Status: offline 		Conservative though my views may be, there are many, many ways to define heroism, fighting spirit and heroic acts. "Heroes" are meant to inspire others and Mrs. Gifford has certainly done that and acted as a role model - especially for veterans dealing with debilitating injuries.

I'm fine with the Navy's choice to name one of the new LCS after her.

Aylee, with all due respect, the LCS is an evolving design that will result in a fine ship for the mission intended. Both versions are far from being questionable in design and function beyond that which is true of any new class of vessel - naval or commercial. In the end their versatility will save money because they will be easily adaptable to multiple missions, eliminating the need for different classes of combatants to perform those differing missions. The Navy is working hard to accomplish that goal across the board in vessel design.

Saying someone is ignorant is not an attack any more than saying I am short is an attack. It is simply a statement that the person lacks applicable knowledge the same way that the top of my balding head lacks altitude.

Good grief, who do you think you're kidding? You have no idea what the operating parameters of active duty subs are. This isn't something you can look up in your handy copy of Jane's or on the intertubes.

Military analysts tend to have a pretty decent idea of the capabilities of active military technologies.

The titanium double hulls of the best Russian nuclear submarines can handle at least 1km operational depth, while the best guess as to the U.S. fleet places the operating depth of the deepest-going ones at about 400m max. As a rule, the crush depth margin is higher for titanium hulls, but either will have a margin of at least 2:1.

That your feet reach the ground makes you as tall as anyone in that direction. Altitude in the other direction is always optional.
