I have a sony ereader and I really found the price to be attractive and the fact that it is open format. I can easily put research articles that I download onto it without 9 extra steps to convert it and I am not tied to amazon which I am very happy about. It isn't that I specifically have anything against amazon, I just dislike when a company tell me that I need to buy from them exclusively. The sony store, if you chose to use it, has many books for free or very cheap.
The sony ereader is generally lighter from 5.5 oz for the lightest with the heaviest being 9.6. The lightest kindle is 8.5 oz while the heaviest is 18.9.
My ereader doesn't have wifi though and from what i understand kindles do. I don't find this to be a big deal though because i download a book at home and then i don't have to worry about it again.
Not having space for an SD card on the newer kindles is an issue IMO because i like to store my books on them.
So there you have a brief look at a different product and how it stands up to the kindle. I will say though that I still enjoy having a physical book in my hands. I do about 50/50 of my reading on my ereader.

That's not hard either - you may be able to sync your library.

This is how I do it for library books as my DX does not have the needed wifi for this to be automatic:

Plug in kindle, select Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer on the window that pops up.

Browse to Documents.

Open another Windows Explorer and browse to the location where books are stored.

Copy into the kindle's Documents folder.

I'm happy you're happy with your Sony; just wanted to correct a few things.

The new light Kindle is 5.98 ounces :)

2GB on device for 1,400 books plus free cloud storage for all Amazon content so you never have to worry about running out of space

Glad to hear they made a lighter one because when you are reading for a few hours that can get heavy. To be honest, I am not up on the "cloud" and like the SD cards because I can trade and loan books with my sisters just like i do with my physical books. So it really isn't a space issue as much as a convenience issue.

Ah, you've hit upon the one major drawback of the Kindle - limited ability to lend.

yeah...what she said. [:)]

A quick derail of my own thread,I'm currently reading,in actual BOOK form,Tom Clancy's newest thriller "Locked On"in it we follow the adventures of Jack Ryan Jr.the son of the beloved Clancy character Jack Ryan.Now I like Clancy's work DESPITE his obvious right wing tilt,it is fiction,I can afford to read about the Constitution being trampled...I just don't want to actually experience such things.
Well Mr Clancy must be having an adverse reaction to the current administration for he has gone way overboard on the tilt this time...this table isn't tilted,it's flipped upside down.....lol.
Still,all in all it is ,so far,a good read...as long as you can ignore the cheap shots taken at the left,the media and so forth.....lol.

Does anyone have "Altered Carbon" or any other Richard K. Morgan epubs they can send me?

I've been holding off purchasing the ebooks because the paper books are available at my library, but Morgan's work is something I'd like in my collection.

FR

I have a MSWord to PDF converter. A Kindle will read a .pdf file. Basically, any text I want I can download from my PC to my Kindle. I can now read all kinds of filth on the train while looking like I'm doing something ever so important and professional. Fun!

Not entirely germane, but I'm a tremendous Nook advocate. I loved my First Edition for the year I used it, and now I never go anywhere without my Simple Touch in hand. If anyone has Nook questions, I'm happy to provide answers.

DesFIP -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/18/2012 11:19:31 AM)

I saw a Kobo Touch in Grand Central while waiting for my train. I liked it a lot. But I haven't seen it for sale anywhere else. The big problem with the Kindle is you can't share books unless you're on the same account. My daughter and I aren't so we occasionally swipe each other's kindle.

PeonForHer -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/18/2012 1:01:42 PM)

Got it and replied with attachments.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/18/2012 1:11:22 PM)

People should buy me stuff. Just putting that out there.

Outhere69 showed me her kindle at Calibirthday 3, and it was enchanting how much LARGER the type could get! So I didnt even need my glasses!! very exciting indeed. One of these years...I am very trailing edge so far as buying technology goes, and the library is free.

Lockit -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/18/2012 1:17:59 PM)

Knyt bought me a Kindle for V'day and I giggled all night loading books in an instant. I couldn't believe how I clicked and looked down at my Kindle and there it was! Magic! I had so much fun learning about my Kindle. A whole new world opened up to this non tech savvy older wench! [:D]

The advice here helped in a major way!

Edit... c not s! [:D]

SpiritedRadiance -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/18/2012 1:19:39 PM)

Ereaders are great.. There are many options..

First what will you be using the device for? Is it just reading? Or will you want to play games, watch movies and the like?

If its the first the 79$ kindle touch, or the 99$ nook is a good idea

However if you want it all and a bag of chips... you can spend 299 for the kindle fire or the nook.. OR...

You can go the tablet route...

you can get a decent tablet for around 150 bucks online, with the andriod platform..

You can then download the kindle app (all the free kindle books) the nook app (all the free nook books) and both allow for library lending (meaning all your librarys free books)

You get the option between a 7 or 10 inch screen (again most can come between 100 and 200 bucks) the full andriod market meaning thousands upon thousands of apps to amuse yourself....

Also they are MicroSD extenable up to usually a 32 Gig card...

Des The Kobo, Was a borders based ereader and borders went out of business... (its why i shy away from the nook because If BaN goes out of business its the same thing with the kobo...No more support, no more books, and a waste of 149 bucks or more)

IS the latest Neal Stephenson the same when you don't have a kilo of paper resting on your tummy? I THINK NOT! [;)]
