Well, my credit card company decided to send me a new card with a new credit limit, so I bit the bullet and ordered a Kindle Touch for myself. Scanning the selection of free books is what made me cave. There appears to be a great selection of historical writings like the life of a slave, the life of a homesteader woman, biographies, etc., those always intrigue me. I got the free trial of Amazon Prime, we'll see how that goes.

I managed to drag my eyes away from the pretty colors of the Fire, lol. It might be a lot more than I really need or would use. We'll see how the Touch works out and maybe I'll get the Fire for Christmas :)

Thanks to all who offered me advice and suggestions about the Fire! Can't wait for Saturday when the Touch arrives now!!!

I just found a great link.

http://kindlefirereloaded.themoneyclubsite.com/uncategorized/kindle-fire-new/

After reading that, I think I will get a clapper lamp... hehe... and a touch kindle.

Haha! A clapper light and a Craftmatic adjustable bed! Sounds like heaven!!! [:D]

I have been having the most fun messing with my amazon wishlist!! So many books to look for this spring!! And there is a Kindle with a keyboard! So of course I had to add it, so I can do all kinds of reading about it before not buying it. [:D] I was the same way with the netbooks before I got my android phone.

I indulged in some pre-owned betsey johnson shoes on ebay, too! Summer is only four months away, people!!

I decided on the one without the keyboard because I don't see me using it often enough, (and if I need a keyboard, a virtual one shows up on the touch) I'm glad I got the touch because I can forget I'm not reading a regular book.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/22/2012 6:43:52 PM)

I feel all obsessed now! But I don't understand the price difference between the keyboard ones. I wouldn't want it unless I could also email with it, I don't think.

xxblushesxx -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/22/2012 6:57:11 PM)

Ah. I've got wifi enabled so I can order books through it, but the little bit of internet (please read up on the reviews) the one you're looking at offers, is just not enough for me. I'd rather use my laptop (or blackberry) for internet, and my reader for reading books.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/22/2012 7:48:12 PM)

I'll probably decide the same. It's the battery life that's alluring, plus the memory. I read ebooks but I don't want to suck up my phone memory with Dostoevsky.

Fantasy shopping I am good at it!

MistressDarkArt -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/22/2012 7:55:31 PM)

Just an FYI to those who may be interested:

My library uses Overdrive for downloading of audio and e-books. I just found out they have their own free app for reading or audio book listening on just about any device. So that's on the phone now as well as the laptop, and the Kindle app isn't even necessary. Nifty.

xxblushesxx -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/22/2012 8:06:27 PM)

E-readers haven't been necessary in years. (or ever) I have a Nintendo DS I got a few years ago, and knew I could turn it into an e-reader. (same with my blackberry) I got my Kindle as a stand alone reading device for several reasons. I didn't want to look at a little bitty screen to read my books, and I didn't want anything that was back-lit (so I could easily read outside.) I wanted something comfortable to read so I could "lose myself" in the books.
If you're comfortable reading on those screens, there is no reason to buy something else. I just wanted something a bit bigger and more "book-like". [:)]

Easy tip for improving battery life on any reading device (especially smartphones which are notorious for sucking current): black background, white lettering (think, Fet ;-). Also really nice at night when the bright light from the phone might disturb others around you.

What appeals to me about the kindle is the potential for large font! I can't read onmy phone screen without my serious glasses. And I jjust found gutenberg press!

MistressDarkArt -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/22/2012 9:21:29 PM)

Ahhh, yes...Gutenberg!! [sm=cheering.gif] It's amazing we ever sleep with all this portable digital goodness around us!!

Easy perhaps, but ineffective for most devices. The color displayed actually has no significant influence on power draw for LCD displays. Switching a pixel to black doesn't turn off the light behind the pixel; what happens instead is that liquid crystals twist to block the light, a bit like shutters closing over a window. The light transmission is blocked, so the pixel appears dark, but the light source itself is still very much on and consuming the same power as if the pixel were completely white (or any other color). If you like white on black, by all means go for it – but an attempt to improve battery life with the color scheme will be misguided. Turning down the backlight, on the other hand, can actually save battery life, albeit at the cost of reduced contrast.

E Ink screens wouldn't benefit from the tip, either. OLED displays, which are used in a few phones, would see an improvement in battery life, though.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/23/2012 1:59:48 PM)

I am still most interested in the keyboard 3G one... the Fire looks interesting because of streaming video. WHICH I WOULD NEVER USE! It's purely sad, when it comes to what I actually purchase I am totally trailing edge, but I want the shiniest thing with the most fancy accoutrement.

Meh. Both are on my wish list, so I can look at them and compare and contrast. I'm gonna go blind reading on my phone!

subrob1967 -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/23/2012 2:49:15 PM)

We have a Fire, a Nook, an Asus Iconia Tablet, and an iPod Touch... Karen uses the Fire religiously, while I use the Iconia... Both are really good ereaders. The Nook is just collecting dust, Holly prefers her Optimus phone over the Nook.

If you want a reader that does more, like Collarme, or email, look into a tablet, or the Fire, if it's strictly for reading, any old Kindle will do.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/23/2012 3:37:42 PM)

I am probably going to go with the keyboard kindle if I can access the ebook websites from it. Someone can tell me alll about that stuff. (so useful to have people to ask questions of!)

slvemike4u -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/25/2012 8:13:07 PM)

Well,with it being my birthday,and with me being real talented at dropping pointed hints,I am the proud owner of a Kindle Fire.
Now I need to rush thru this Clancy thriller so I can enjoy the new Vince Flynn thriller(anyone notice the decided right wing tilt to my reading pleasures....lol,and me a flaming liberal....lol)The Kill Shot that I have already purchased for my "Fire"

AttitudyJudy -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/25/2012 8:26:05 PM)

Happy Birthday, that's a great present! Let me know how you like it, because if my new Touch and I play nicely together (and so far, we are!) then I might get a Fire for Christmas! [:)]

I got the free one-month trial of Amazon Prime, so I'm going through all the free books right now. I haven't decided if I'm going to cancel it or not yet.

slvemike4u -> RE: E-readers....need help (2/25/2012 8:31:23 PM)

What is the "Amazon Prime"?
