It may be controversial to say this but it does seem that after Europe's weakness subsequent to WWII, intensified with the loss of empires and with the rise of the USSR to the East, resulted in the old power-politics getting hastily swept under the carpet when it was convenient to do so. The US didn't experience a similar situation which explains the divergence today. Having said that the old politics of division is still a reality in Europe today, and has become more visible with the consensus politics of the EU breaking down... quote:
