One could say the same about the political statements made by Charlton Heston calling for the blacklisting of actors, directors and screenwriters who were public supporters of Democratic political candidates (made when he ran unsuccessfully for President of the Screen Actors' Guild in 1985, losing to Patty Duke Austin) and John Wayne who actively supported Senator Joe MCarthy's witchhunts in the 1950's and the blacklist of the 1950's. Today we have Kelsey Grammer (formerly TV's "Frasier") publically expressing his Right-wing views - so one could consider him the mirror image of Sean Penn. Of course, one can also argue that, by becoming an actor, an American does not give up his or her 1st Amendment rights to Freedom of Speech.
