Dear Members of the Georgetown Community:

There is a legitimate question of public policy before our nation today. In the effort to address the problem of the nearly fifty million Americans who lack health insurance, our lawmakers enacted legislation that seeks to increase access to health care. In recent weeks, a question regarding the breadth of services that will be covered has focused significant public attention on the issue of contraceptive coverage. Many, including the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, have offered important perspectives on this issue.

In recent days, a law student of Georgetown, Sandra Fluke, offered her testimony regarding the proposed regulations by the Department of Health and Human Services before a group of members of Congress. She was respectful, sincere, and spoke with conviction. She provided a model of civil discourse. This expression of conscience was in the tradition of the deepest values we share as a people. One need not agree with her substantive position to support her right to respectful free expression. And yet, some of those who disagreed with her position – including Rush Limbaugh and commentators throughout the blogosphere and in various other media channels – responded with behavior that can only be described as misogynistic, vitriolic, and a misrepresentation of the position of our student.

In our vibrant and diverse society, there always are important differences that need to be debated, with strong and legitimate beliefs held on all sides of challenging issues. The greatest contribution of the American project is the recognition that together, we can rely on civil discourse to engage the tensions that characterize these difficult issues, and work towards resolutions that balance deeply held and different perspectives. We have learned through painful experience that we must respect one another and we acknowledge that the best way to confront our differences is through constructive public debate. At times, the exercise of one person’s freedom may conflict with another’s. As Americans, we accept that the only answer to our differences is further engagement.

In an earlier time, St. Augustine captured the sense of what is required in civil discourse: "Let us, on both sides, lay aside all arrogance. Let us not, on either side, claim that we have already discovered the truth. Let us seek it together as something which is known to neither of us. For then only may we seek it, lovingly and tranquilly, if there be no bold presumption that it is already discovered and possessed."

If we, instead, allow coarseness, anger – even hatred – to stand for civil discourse in America, we violate the sacred trust that has been handed down through the generations beginning with our Founders. The values that hold us together as a people require nothing less than eternal vigilance. This is our moment to stand for the values of civility in our engagement with one another.

Sincerely,

John J. DeGioia
President
Georgetown University

My, my, my. Such outrage from the left after one, ONE, conservative media person calls a Pelosi (if not Obama) PLANT something untoward. Where was the left's outrage when virtually every liberal media person was calling Sarah Palin and her daughter every untoward thing in the book? Lefty hypocrites, one and all.

Any evidence that someone would spend 3 years in law school as a "plant" and that the person involved was clairvoyant enough to see this debate coming at this particular time?

If she can see that far into the future, I better give her a ring and ask for some lottery numbers.

There's another possibility.

Your post is just ASSWIPE.

It's unimaginable how stupid the media thinks some people are to print this stuff and expect that anyone that doesn't have to be reminded to breathe will buy it.

I prefer "false equivilency" to "hypocrite" - as in:

A member of my group hacked 5 people to death with a meat cleaver - but what about that person of your group who got a ticket for driving 60 MPH in a 35 MPH zone?

Your person is just as bad - why aren't you criticizing your guy for speeding instead of criticizing my guy for hacked 5 people to death with a meat cleaver?

There appears to be evidence though that she said that while G-town's law school is no doubt one of the finest in the country she specifically chose to go there so she could pick this fight. That certainly doesn't make her a plant but it makes her an activist with an axe to grind. Wrong? Of course not. However, let's not portray her as some innocent, doe-eyed girl that got caught up in a media frenzy that doesn't have her licking her lips at the thought of all the attention she is getting. This will translate into big dollars for her.

Now, none of that excuses what Limbaugh said about her but let's be accurate. She was spoiling for a fight and she got one. I have less empathy for her than I did, initially.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Ah. She should just take being villified by a lying tosspot through a mass media outlet and maybe if she's a good girl and doesn't go whining about it afterwards, he'll throw her a fivespot for her trouble?

Again, Michael, to have been a plant, she would have to have known about 4 years in advance (1 year of application process and 3 years of school) that this battle was going to heat up at this time.

Now you portray her as an activist with an ax to grind. That may be true. A LOT of people enter law school seeing themselves as an "Activist for Justice". Personally, I don't have a hell of a lot of sympathy for any lawyer past, present or future.

My only point was that there are a lot of people who believe she was Pelosi's 'plant' and that begs the question.

Is the young lady clairvoyant or are those who believe that conspiracy tale unimaginably stupid?

I see those 2 as the only possibilities.

mnottertail -> RE: Does Mitt Romney Have A Pair.... THIS is where we find out (3/6/2012 12:17:12 PM)

Uh, the reason people go to law school at Georgetown it is because it is one of if not the Premiere University for a law degree.  Sneaking in the fucking joint in the middle of Ws second term  (being prescient about the outcome a year or two down the road, and having the foresight to get lined up for a senate hearing) so that she could be vilified by some drooling imbecilic lout and his ass suckers is probably giving this ignorant and promiscuous slut more credit than she is due, well hell, even the birther conspiracists aren't given that sort of credit.

May I take that as a vote for "the conspiracy theorists who believe she is Pelosi's plant are unimaginably stupid" ?

No, Hill. Ms. Fluke said that she reviewed the coverage materials and went to G-Town to pick a fight. She's been leading this charge (on that campus) since she got there.

The fact that there's a governmental over-lap (over-flap?) is sort of coincidental. These are her admissions (from sources in other threads). Again; I'm not saying she's a plant. I'm saying she had an agenda and while I'm sure she wasn't looking forward to being called a slut and a prostitute, the attention is her dream come true.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I would have been more mordant in my description of those detrious souls, but your phrase is succint, and I can accept that as an approximation of my opinion on the matter.

Lawyers from big name schools are (by definition) attention whores. That would make the students wannabe attention whores.

Actually, I'll even go so far as to add Med schools and graduate schools. When you enter grad school, you are "By God gonna make a NAME for yourself."
If you don't have that attitude, you really don't have much business there in the first place.

Sometimes, it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Bottom line is that a guy who takes his Gulfstream, a pocketfull of viagra and a few buds down the the DR aka Bangkok of the Carribean (home of plentiful 12-year-old prostitutes) doesn't have much business talking about another person's alleged sex life.

ETA. Ya think he did "A Clinton" with one of his famous cigars? At least Lewinsky was of legal age.

For those who feel Romney need not say anything. Fine.

In the fall when people start asking him questions like "Do you support the Congressional hearing process"? "Do you support a citizen's right to testify before a hearing?" "Do you support a democratic public debate about issues" Romney is going to look a tad foolish. If he can't answer these questions now, what makes anyone think he can answer them convincingly this fall. And I think these are extremely relevant questions to be asking a Presidential candidate.

Sweety, those are incredibly relevant questions.

But "shouldn't Romney (essentially) apologize for Rush Limbaugh's lack of any sense of brain cells....because he's like....equivalent to a one cell organism" is NOT a relevant question.....NOR is it important for Romney to be a participant in.

(Nor is it reasonable for YOU to go to your local paper and denounce the asshole that lives 3 houses down from you because....he's an asshole).

EVERYONE WITHIN 16 BLOCKS ALREADY KNOWS...........he's an ASSHOLE!!!!!!

If you say NOTHING AT ALL.....NO ONE (with a brain) will think YOU'RE AN ASSHOLE BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T SAY "HE'S AN ASSHOLE".

Ya know why?

Because everyone already knows he's an asshole!

To assume everyone knows that rush is an ass-hat is lazy.

To assume Rush Limbaugh is an asshat proves you're capable of constructing full sentences and have the ability to parallel park at minimum.

If you can do neither....you might assume otherwise.

That ain't lazy.

Look at his numbers (before) and watch them (after)....they'll rise again.

There are a LOT of folks out there who will never make it past the "First name?" part of the MENSA test.

I fundamentally disagree with this. Knowing who the bully is in the playground does NOT mean that someone is actually willing to stand up to him. Yes we all know who the bully is. And we all know who the bully represents. No one is disputing that. The question is, which one of the presidential candidates is man enough to stand up to him and the policies he represents.

President Obama has already spoken up and showed he has both balls and class. As Romney is likely to be the Republican candidate I think he needs to stand up to the bully (Limbaugh and the religious right). His failure to do so means he is deferring to the bully. Wow, how presidential of him that he can't even take on Limbaugh. Seriously?

Some years back, I did a fair bit of reading about school bullies for a work project. One of the things I learned is that bullying thrives on silence. If the bully's peers do not chime in, he or she is much more likely to persist in and repeat the attack.
