OK, I had a thought, and immediately my "sexist warning," went off. Then I figured, "What the heck, the politics boards could use more arguments..." (evil grin).
So here is my thought:
Men will always outnumber women in the military because men don't care what they wear, and find uniforms to be handy since we don't have to worry about matching. Meanwhile women care a lot about choosing outfits, will find a uniform stifling of their creativity and detrimental to their ability to use looks to attract men. Besides, women hate to wear the same outfit as other women.
What do you all think? Am I right or wrong? Also, am I sexist or is this an acceptable question?

I purpose giving women the option of choosing outfits. Clearly they couldn't wear what they want as no one would know who their enemy was but how about allowing women to wear close fitting leather as an alternative? It is a durable material and more importantly looks good... [;)]

Im thinking you are going to take a lot of slapping over this.

Wrong. I know men who are clothes horses, and women who are very much at home in a t-shirt and jeans.

Sexist.. but hey, you got the right to ask it. [8D]

I don't see the problem, myself. Military women can still wear different make up and scents to each other. They could even wear arse-hugging lycra fatigues, possibly in subtly different shades. Also, I don't see why it's impossible for inventors to come up with really rugged, Goretex-lined 'field-stilettos' or 'combat-strappy-sandals', either. Sorted.

You're wrong (IMO) and your generalization of what women will and will not enjoy wearing gives us the answer to your next question: "You're not sexist because of one thought but this is asked in a sexist manner"

Actually no, not only are uniforms rigidly defined, with only a few acceptable choices. Men just have one choice, women can have a standard length skirt or pants, and are allowed to either wear a specific type of earrings or not wear that one type of earrings (pearl for officers, gold for enlisted). Makeup is allowed, but must be subdued. Footwear is uniform as well.

I served, I served with some women who were smoking hot when not in uniform too! In uniform they don't look as good...sigh.

Would you say there are more male clothes-horses or female clothes-horses? Would you say there are more males who don't care what they wear or females who don't care what they wear?

I think when taking a career that requires a uniform most of both sexes wont care.

I think when going out to party/dates/events most of both sexes do care.

Ok, where to start. For one, you can ask pretty much anything you please, this is still, on paper anyhow, a free country. Your question, as it stands, yes definitely has sexist overtones.

I disagree that there 'will always be more men than women in the military'. There are some fairly obvious social reasons why, at this time and in this country, men outnumber women in the military. Those social standards are changing however, and the ratio of males to females in the military, and in almost every other traditionally male dominated career fields is changing. I wouldn't be too surprised if, in the next 50 years or so the ratio of men to women in the armed services is equal, or even slightly tipped in favor of women.

As far as why someone chooses to serve in the military, that's generally a highly personal thing. And I'm certain that at least occasionally that reason boils down to getting to wear a sexy uniform. (Yes, I find military uniforms to be incredibly sexy, on men or women. Yum!)

I'm female, and I'm not a clothes horse. I'm perfectly happy wearing the same outfit day after day for weeks on end, or wearing nothing at all when it's warm enough and I can. I have 3 pairs of shoes, and none of them are high heels. Master is more of a clothes horse than I am, but only because he prefers a bit more variety in what he wears.

I would say men care way more about what they wear than women. Women are much likely to accept something they don't care for but wear it anyway. Take the group of men who claim they don't care about clothes and hand them a pink frilly shirt to wear. I can almost guarantee they will refuse to wear it. They may prefer jeans and a t-shirt but they definitely care about what they wear.

I'll probably get shit over my comments, but only because I made them. [8D]

I agree there will probably always be more men in the military than women. However, I disagree on why. I don't believe people go into the military because of the uniform. Uniform might have some small sway in which branch of the military one chooses, but I doubt someone is going to choose to go into the military because of the uniform. Who can't go out and buy camo-gear? Head to Cabela's, Gander Mountain, or Bass Pro and you'll be greeted with plenty (no intent to leave any other shops out, just that those are the 3 that come to mind because they are in the area). The dress uniforms might be difficult to gather outside the military, but how often do they wear their dress uni's?

Social norms have a much greater bearing on gender in the military than uniform. Social norms are changing, but girls are still pushed towards stereotypical "girly" and boys are still pushed towards stereotypical "boy" things. The push isn't as strict for the girls as it once was, but I'm not sure the push for the boys has changed much at all. This is what I believe is driving the changing gender demographic in the military.

men ARE in fact caring more for what they wear.

if you look closely women are more in for the obvious differences like shape and colour, things that attract from far.
but men, while looking from the far all alike, DO care for the material and cut of their shoes, by example. they care about the fine differences.

so to say it in a bit overexaggerated way:
while women would buy plastic shoes if they look good and are from a well known designer, men would instead rather buy shoes that just look like shoes, but are hand sewn and made of spanish horse leather... men are just as picky.
