...I think everyone can agree it's time we have someone in the White House who can unite us again as one proud country.

Well, it's obvious where you come in! So - are you a sock puppet or a Teabagger, or what? Lord, give me strength!

Hey guys can we cool it with the inflammatory post titles here? President Reagan brought this country together

In answer to your first question, NO

In answer to your followup statement, Are you fucking KIDDING me?

Reagan was the one who sold the sould of the Republican party to the religious right. Remember the so-called "moral majority" They were neither. Reagan began the process that has led to the massive divide between the 2 parties in this country.

Gimme a break. You're 35. That means you were about 3 years old when Reagan took office. What would you know about the country before Reagan except what you have been told?

By the way, I work in business too as I own one.

No, he did not.

Reagan was eternally dividing the country with his race and class dog whistles.

Think you'd better check your math, guy. Actually I voted for Reagan and attended a very chic affair the night he creamed Mondale.

I think that's super and I am in no way trying to diminish the accomplishments of small business owners. One of the best things about Republican administrations is how friendly they are to guys trying to get their foot in the door and start a little business. When I talk about the "business community" though I am referring to guys like me who are capable of leveraging some mondo assets at the drop of a hat.

You folk's been hornswoggled.
Read JVP's profile-he's doing a pretty damn fine Patrick Bateman impersonation.
The Wall Street/Reagan comments are part of the masque.

Oh look! Ken is applying the latest and greatest new liberal code phrase retroactively (we have always been at war with Eastasia, dontcha know).

"Dog whistling," for those who don't get the talking points emails, or try to stay abreast of the great liberal slur machine, means, "we can't put our finger on anything that is specifically offensive, but we don't like the sound of it, or that it might resonate with people, and will respond by calling it racist anyway."

It's a bit like that "new racism" they invented a little while back, where people who bought into the Hope and Change promises, but have decided they were sold a bill of goods, are now racists, because they have changed their minds about supporting Obama for another round.

Yep. It was all just the hidden messages that gave Reagan his stunning landslide re-election. A booming economy, and a groundswell of national pride and optimism had nothing to do with it.

His math is fine. Your profile claims you're 35. Now, your integrity has already been called into question, but let's assume this number is accurate for math's sake.

Today we're in 2012. Not sure you're clear on that, so just making sure. The Mondale/Reagan election happened in 1984. That was a long time ago! Let me get the calculator out so I'm sure I don't make a mistake...OK, 28 years ago. That makes you seven, maybe eight (depending on when your birthday falls) for that election.

Now, maybe your parents took you to their party. Maybe your school had a mock election. But as for voting for Reagan--no, you didn't.

Ah, no. You wish. Nothing about you jives with "successful businessman who knows his field and colleagues well" (<--my quotes, to show character type). For one, they don't say vague things--or stupid things. It's part of what makes them successful. Businessman are interested in reality, not bluster.

Or, of course, maybe you're lying about your age. It would hardly be the first untruth you've told. That would make you at least 46....sorry, that's 18, plus 28...that's 46. Perhaps you believe you look 11 years younger. Good luck with that. It doesn't usually end well.

What fact did I rewrite, Lucy? That the economy was coming back in a big and booming way when Americans went to the polls November of '84? That national pride and optimism were way up? That Reagan won the election in a landslide?

Europe kinda lost confidence in America when you elected a cowboy actor and not even a real good one.
In another thread someone asked where did we change our view on America?
Right about there, Reagan.
Since then we look on american elections as a show instead of a debate.

Cool - thanks for the new author tip. First library I checked had 5 novels available, but not, alas, American Psycho.

Bullshit, Lucy. You made an accusation, I referenced what I had said to begin with, and asked you to clarify. Maybe, since you can't figure out what you were talking about, you should just accuse me of "dog whistling?"

The economy point is debatable to the extent that we bought it.

Federal spending: $851.85 billion
Federal debt: $1564.7 billion

Quadrupling the national debt in eight years creates jobs -- but at a cost and a philosophy we're still paying for dearly,
eight years that turned the largest creditor nation in the world into the largest debtor nation in the world,
and saw ownership of 24% of U.S. assets pass into foreign hands.

Real net exports fell like a stone--from $140 billion to negative (!) $100 billion, a $240 billion fall and a tremendous trade deficit,
Setting up the fall of "made in America" that has continued until recent years.

We also had higher real interest rates, with short term rates reaching 10.5% and long term interest rates reaching 11.8%.

But yes, GNP rose. By definition, a recovery.

To compare, GNP has risen steady since March 2009, and continues to do so.
Yet the economy is considered to be so great.
Unemployment is even lower now than at this point in Reagan's term.

Interestingly, Obama's popularity mirrors Reagan's very closely.
