I also had a coworker who believed that Satan planted the fossils, Marc! What the hell!

My "favorite" self delusion:

Parents who still believe that if they get their children vaccinated for childhood diseases, their children will "get" autism - even though the scientist who claimed this has been proven to be a fraud and the study he published has been conclusively proven to be faked.

But if you try to tell them, they react like an atheist would if they were presented concrete proof there is a God - or a religious person would if they were presented concrete proof there isn't any God.

A couple years ago, on Darwin's 150th birthday, Ray Comfort's organization passed out special editions of the Origin of the Species for free on college campuses.  They contained a special introduction by Comfort, discrediting Darwin and the theory of evolution.  My son was at UW at the time, and managed to score me one, at great personal cost to himself, since he had to talk to some dumb bastard to get one.  It is truly hilarious.  Here is the link:

I remember hearing about this. Someone suggested handing out Bibles with scientific disclaimers in the front. I wonder if they went through with it.

Ray "The Banana Man" Comfort.

ETA: Ah, it was the awesomely beautiful and intelligent ZOMGitscriss that suggested the prefaced Bible.

They change their minds?

I had a guy pull over while I was out jogging to explain that to me.

[SIDEBAR]: Years ago I had a Christian Fundamentalist co-worker who was quite convinced that fossils were buried by satan himself as part of his plan to ensnare our souls. Whenever I think about it I imagine satan wearing a pith helmet and carrying a shovel, a couple of demons with sacks of fossils following behind. "Hmmm... this looks like a good spot to put that archeopteryx. Boy, this will really fool them, huh?"

They change their minds?

No - they would claim that the evidence is somehow tainted - because to change their minds would be admitting they were wrong, and they have invested so much of their life convincing themselves they are right. If somehow God materialized in front of an atheist and shook hands with him - the atheist would still claim it was some form of a magic trick and not real.

Atheists, in most cases, aren't much different than theists - they believe what they believe (or, if you prefer, they don't believe what they don't believe) and they have invested so much of their self-image into their belief/non-belief that they will hold on to their belief/non-belief as long as they can.

I've got no idea which kind of atheists you're talking about, the skeptics and methodological naturalists that I'm familiar with change their opinions as new evidence becomes available, that's kind of the whole point of those positions.

I think atheists tend to get a bad rap because they generally have taken the time to study the arguments out there so when they're presented for the hundredth time with a faulty proof that was refuted 200 years ago they aren't swayed by it.

Sure the guy presenting that turd sandwich of a proof can end up thinking that the atheist is pigheadedly closing his mind to reality but keep in mind that's the same sort of conclusion anti-vaxers would tend to reach if they were talking to oh say you.

Some of the atheists I have encountered on-line and in person are what I jokingly refer to as "Evangelical Fundamentalist Atheists" – a most annoying minority of atheists to be sure. Just as "Evangelical Fundamentalist Protestant Christians" are a most annoying minority of Christians – annoying to Christians like me as well as they must be annoying to non-Christians.

My all-time favorite "Evangelical Fundamentalist Atheist" was the one who pontificated that if anyone expressed a belief in a God, Goddess or Gods, it was ipso facto proof of insanity and mental illness and that all theists should be involuntarily placed in secure mental institutions until they had been "cured" of their theism. His rhetoric was so similar to an "Evangelical Fundamentalist Protestant Christians'" rhetoric (just from a different angle) I almost couldn’t believe it. The worst of it was that he was using a bullhorn standing across the street from a church in Denver during Christmas Eve religious services. A most tolerant atheist...

I am a non-denominational Christian myself. As far as I am concerned, my theism is my own business, just as an atheist's atheism is their business. Oddly enough, that means I get proselytized by Christians who belong to specific denominations (especially Southern Baptists) because in their minds you can’t be a “true” Christian if you do not belong to their specific denomination - and I get proselytized by atheists trying to "save" me from my theism. Atheists don’t go door-to-door like Mormons or Jehovah’s Witnesses, but there are some atheists who feel compelled to "convert" me to atheism as soon as they find out I am a Christian.

Why not? He was using the same logic you were using a couple posts ago.

I'm talking to a christian in another thread who's ranting delusionally and has started talking about the voices in his head. If we plug that experience into your idea that the actions of some can be turned into a blanket statement about an ism the quoted position above is the result.

So I'd be careful about throwing such stones if I were you because it's a good way to convince others to throw them back.
