Kirata -> The Good, the Bad, and the Money (3/26/2012 3:12:01 PM)

First, the police information supporting the decision not to arrest:
Police: Zimmerman says Trayvon decked him with one blow then began hammering his head

With a single punch, Trayvon Martin decked the Neighborhood Watch volunteer who eventually shot and killed the unarmed 17-year-old, then Trayvon climbed on top of George Zimmerman and slammed his head into the sidewalk, leaving him bloody and battered, law enforcement authorities have revealed to the Orlando Sentinel.

That is the account Zimmerman gave police, and much of it has been corroborated by witnesses...

Zimmerman has not spoken publicly about what happened Feb. 26. But that night, and in later meetings, he described and re-enacted for police what he says took place...

On Feb. 26, when Zimmerman first spotted Trayvon, he called police and reported a suspicious person, describing Trayvon as black, acting strangely and perhaps on drugs.

Zimmerman got out of his SUV to follow Trayvon on foot. When a dispatch employee asked Zimmerman if he was following the 17-year-old, Zimmerman said yes. The dispatcher told Zimmerman he did not need to do that.

There is about a one-minute gap during which police say they're not sure what happened.

Zimmerman told them he lost sight of Trayvon and was walking back to his SUV when Trayvon approached him from the left rear, and they exchanged words.

Trayvon asked Zimmerman if he had a problem. Zimmerman said no and reached for his cell phone, he told police. Trayvon then said, "Well, you do now" or something similar and punched Zimmerman in the nose, according to the account he gave police.

Zimmerman fell to the ground and Trayvon got on top of him and began slamming his head into the sidewalk, he told police.

    Zimmerman began yelling for help.

Several witnesses heard those cries, and there's been a dispute about whether they came from Zimmerman or Trayvon.

Lawyers for Trayvon's family say it was Trayvon, but police say their evidence indicates it was Zimmerman.

One witness, who has since talked to local television news reporters, told police he saw Zimmerman on the ground with Trayvon on top, pounding him — and was unequivocal that it was Zimmerman who was crying for help.
Next, the other shoe drops...
Multiple suspensions paint complicated portrait of Trayvon Martin

Miami Gardens teenager Trayvon Martin was suspended from school in October in an incident in which he was found in possession of women’s jewelry and a screwdriver that a schools security staffer described as a “burglary tool,” The Miami Herald has learned.

Trayvon, who claimed that an unnamed friend had given him the jewelry, was not disciplined because of the discovery, but was instead suspended for graffiti, according to a Miami-Dade Schools Police report obtained by The Miami Herald...

According to the report, on Oct. 21 staffers monitoring a security camera at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School spotted Trayvon and two other students writing “W.T.F.,” an acronym for “What the f---,” on a hallway locker, according to schools police. The security employee, who knew Trayvon, confronted the teen and looked through his bag for the graffiti marker.

Trayvon’s backpack contained 12 pieces of jewelry, in addition to a watch and a large flathead screwdriver, according to the report, which described the screwdriver as a burglary tool.

Trayvon was asked if the jewelry, which was mostly women’s rings and earrings, belonged to his family or a girlfriend.

“Martin replied it’s not mine. A friend gave it to me,” according to the report. Trayvon declined to name the friend.

School police impounded the jewelry and sent photos of the items to detectives at Miami-Dade police for further investigation...

That suspension was followed four months later by another one, in February, in which Trayvon was caught with an empty plastic bag with traces of marijuana in it, the boy’s family’s attorney has confirmed. A schools police report obtained by The Miami Herald specifies two items: a bag with marijuana residue and a “marijuana pipe.”

The suspension was the third for the teen. On Monday, the family also acknowledged Trayvon had earlier been suspended for tardiness and truancy...

Sharpton said he warned the family from the start that anything negative about Trayvon would be dragged out in an effort to make him out to be a “junkie and a thief.” He knew that would happen, he said, because it’s occurred in every similar case he has ever been involved in...
Got that right. There's a clue.
Former NAACP leader accuses Sharpton and Jackson of ‘exploiting’ Trayvon Martin

Former NAACP leader C.L. Bryant is accusing Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton of “exploiting” the Trayvon Martin tragedy to “racially divide this country.”

“His family should be outraged at the fact that they’re using this child as the bait to inflame racial passions,” Rev. C.L. Bryant said in a Monday interview with The Daily Caller.

The conservative black pastor who was once the chapter president of the Garland, Texas NAACP called Jackson and Sharpton “race hustlers” and said they are “acting as though they are buzzards circling the carcass of this young boy...”

“Why not be angry about the wholesale murder that goes on in the streets of Newark and Chicago?” he asked. “Why isn’t somebody angry about that six-year-old girl who was killed on her steps last weekend in a cross fire when two gang members in Chicago start shooting at each other? Why is there no outrage about that?”
But Trayvon's mother isn't outraged. Instead she's busy.
    Mother Seeks Trayvon Martin Trademarks

The mother of Trayvon Martin has filed two applications to secure trademarks containing her late son’s name, records show.

Sabrina Fulton is seeking marks for the phrases “I Am Trayvon” and “Justice for Trayvon,” according to filings made last week with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In both instances, Fulton is seeking the trademarks for use on “Digital materials, namely, CDs and DVDs featuring Trayvon Martin,” and other products
You just can't make this shit up.

So, because the young man wasn't perfect it was legal to hunt and kill him?

Owner59 -> RE: The Good, the Bad, and the Money (3/26/2012 3:48:23 PM)

If someone was chasing me down.....sorry.....getting punched at is going to be a risk......

MrBukani -> RE: The Good, the Bad, and the Money (3/26/2012 3:53:21 PM)

You know how many fights I had here with others.
Police
Drunks
Junks
Molesters
Thieves
Pickpockets?

If a civil guard beat me or cuffed me and had reasonable defense I would stand down in court and admit I was perhaps past promille.[:D]

I am past[:D] fourty and a hundred fights.

No guns
No knives
Only once I had a knife on me.

Owner59 -> RE: The Good, the Bad, and the Money (3/26/2012 4:00:38 PM)

Now we`re hearing about the kid getting suspended for pot, basically attacking the kids character.......I guess the OP missed "and the ugly"

DaddySatyr -> RE: The Good, the Bad, and the Money (3/26/2012 4:22:58 PM)

Of course you're going to hear about every little detail of what Trayvon Martin did "wrong". That's what comes from a month of his parents, the press, The race baitor and Fat Albert painting him as an angel.

Any time you put anyone on a pedastal, they're bound to fall off. It's called: "Being human".

You had to know that this kid was a teen-ager and, as such, had probably had some kind of experimentation with weed or whatever but ...

The "discovery" of the jewelry and the screw driver adds an interesting wrinkle. It would seem our friend Trayvon is no stranger to skulking through back yards and looking through windows. I wish I could do a decent "Arte Johnson" voice.

Then, we find out that the jewelry was discovered because he was seen (that's pronounced: "caught" for those of you in Poughkeepsie), vandalizing school property. It would appear, from this article, that at least the school security guard was happy with doing a little CYOA and making sure that he had an answer for the spray paint but, didn't particularly care about the suspicious jewelry, given to Trayvon by an accom ... errrr ... friend. The jewelry should have been turned over to the police, when it happened. It wasn't. I smell a conspiracy to keep young Trayvon out of the legal system.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I'm chagrined to say I haven't followed this story as closely as I probably should have.

I did wonder about the aptness of the Till comparisons when I heard them yesterday.

A question for those of you who have followed the events: Any idea why key parts of the story are only breaking now?

Because, like any other similar situation; it doesn't benefit either "side" to have the negative aspects come out. There's nothing nefarious (necessarily) about the details coming out, slowly.

Obviously, there was nothing good for Zimmerman, having his past, thrust into the spotlight.

Apparently, it wasn't in the Martin family's best interest for Trayvon's possible mis-behavior to be public knowledge because it could be used as "evidence" in Zimmerman's defense.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

dcnovice -> RE: The Good, the Bad, and the Money (3/26/2012 5:59:41 PM)

Good points, Michael. Thanks!

Marini -> RE: The Good, the Bad, and the Money (3/26/2012 6:20:55 PM)

I am curious, who/what/where is "The Good" here?

Are you implying George Zimmerman, by playing wanna be cop, chasing and going out of his way to harass Treyvon, than shooting him, is a good guy?

kdsub -> RE: The Good, the Bad, and the Money (3/26/2012 6:33:27 PM)

If the version you are posting is the truth or close to the truth then where are all the facts everyone is talking about to support Zimmerman's being a racists murderer?

Even in this thread what you just stated has been ignored rather than confronted with opposing evidence.

I don't see or can gain from the evidence presented a clear picture of what truly happened let alone who is guilty.

There is enough doubt that we should all wait for the investigation to reach a conclusion rather than be picking sides and calling anyone racists.

I wonder why people can't see where by accusing Zimmerman of murder they are doing exactly the same thing Zimmerman may have done...by presuming guilt.

Kirata, I'm a long way from seeing this as anything but a situation that was created by an asshole with issues, that ended as badly as it possibly could.

That said, what the mother is doing is pretty disgusting.

Owner59 -> RE: The Good, the Bad, and the Money (3/26/2012 6:46:48 PM)

So is demonizing a woman who just lost a child.......and a family who just lost a child.......

Guess one has to be as innocent as the baby Jesus to get justice......as clean as the driven snow......or connected.

Hiya Rich!

Can you tell me what the good is here in this story?
I am waiting for someone to splain the good here.

TheHeretic -> RE: The Good, the Bad, and the Money (3/26/2012 7:06:22 PM)

Hey, Mari!

I have no idea where "the good," might be in this mess, and I'm generally a silver lining kind of guy. It's an awful, stupid tragedy, and the exploitation of it only makes it worse.

I really don't care about the pot. How many 17 year old kids haven't done pot (or some other drug) at least once.

But then, I'm all for the total legalization of pot (along with a few "street" drugs).

tj444 -> RE: The Good, the Bad, and the Money (3/26/2012 7:25:29 PM)

yeah.. and Zimmerman assaulted a cop.. amoung other things.. Zimmerman was a wannabe cop but the closest he could get was to be a harassing NW and call 911 about anyone that he didnt think lived there..

He chased the kid when he was told not to, he caught up to and confronted the kid... Zimmerman has his account but Martins girlfriends account differs, that Martin was shoved cuz his headphones fell off and then the phone went dead.. So does Martins girlfriend have skeletons in her closet that can be used to discredit her also? thats next for them to do, isnt it? and she is just a kid anyway, who would believe a 16 year old? Did Zimmerman have his gun out when he confronted Martin? Was it Martin that feared for his life when watched, stalked, chased, stopped and confronted by an armed man? What would you do in Martins shoes?

Imo, Zimmerman had delusions of grandeur of catching a bad guy and becoming the local hero, his photo in the paper and glowing write-ups about him, parades held in his honor, the key to the city and all that.. you get the idea.. He was an attention seeker and it never occured to him that he would ever get this kind of negative attention he is getting now..

That is why he didnt do what a NW should do and wait for the cops and let them investigate and do the job they are paid to do.. He wanted his name in the paper.. so he was going to chase the kid and subdue him and show everyone what a big man he was, and make his daddy proud.. and his gun made him extra aggressive, much more than a sane person would be...

There are a lot of unanswered questions but it was Zimmerman that was the aggressor with the gun and its the kid thats dead..

I said a while ago that I think Zimmerman will get away with this killing.. he shouldnt, imo, but he will.. [8|]

and rightly or wrongly, it puts a bad light on NW as well..

Sounds like something rush-ass would say.
