It takes under 10 mins to cut mine (what there is of it) so that comes to $50/hour plus a tip.

I pay $130 for cut, color and highlights, including tip. I don't consider myself nuts - I take pride in my hair and I'm often complimented on it. I pay for product (I prefer Aveda - it doesn't irritate my skin like others do), her expertise, the overall services she offers (as in remembering my little quirks and preferences, etc.), and for a color that doesn't look like it came out of a box.

My hair (look, texture, etc.) looks much different these days than it used to. I much prefer it, and I'm willing to pay for it. For me, it's just another way of taking care of myself. I'm kind of self indulgent that way. [:)]

My haircuts at cheaper places are just that hair cuts. I prefer to have someone who's trained in styling hair to style cut mine. I have a few hair issues so I need someone who will be accepting/understanding of then, plus actually know how to cut around my God awful cowlick at the front.

And anyway, theres few things more relaxing than being at the hairdresser being pampered for 2-3 hours.

Oh, I know. My salon has a separate room for color. It's on a hillside with an ocean/sunset view. They have music playing, they serve wine, coffee, tea, water, and soda. They constantly pamper me and even finish up with a scalp and neck massage before I head out for my cut. It's so relaxing to just sit back, read, and have a glass of wine while I get pampered.

For sure, re: the pampering. A hand massage and glass of wine while waiting for the color to set. Stylist did her training in NY, Paris and London. She knows exactly what colors and styles would work best on me, and what does not. I can walk in and say "Do your thing!" and not have to worry about it. She is amazing, and I don't mind paying for amazing.

I cant sit to easily for 2-3 hours. Sitting that long causes some serious back pain flareups . So I wouldn't enjoy a 2-3 hour pampering were it a sit down pampering. However a lay down massage then get up to stretch out then lay down again? Id be in heaven.

Absolutely! I have a set of highlights that you can't even tell that they're not from just being out in the sun. She does an amazing job.

oh yeah! A nice scalp massage with a shampoo and cut, hands and shoulders being massaged while you wait for your pedi to dry, a glass of wine or a cocktail to relax while you're waiting for the color to set and looking out on the harbor with the sun shining....I think I need to make an appointment again soon lol.

One thing you could do is go to a high end salon to get the initial style. A cheaper place ***should*** be able to maintain it.

I would consider paying like 32 dollars, provided the service was great, but no more than that.


Super cuts will cut my hair for free if i cut off 2 feet of hair and donate it to locks of love.

I've had inexpensive haircuts and they generally were bad cuts. I can't figure any way I could cut it myself. It's medium length and I have enough trouble trimming my bangs when I'm desperate.

My latest cheap haircut got me a huge layer taken off the back. Looked a bit weird, for sure. I'm still growing it out!

I'm curious if those of you who regularly pay larger amounts for your hair live in larger cities? (Or the outskirts of.)

While I'm technically commuting distance to Boston, where I live is considered "rural." I can't imagine anyone getting away with charging those kinds of prices here.

What I look for is someone who has hair similar to mine. That has seemed to really be the defining factor as to whether I'm going to be happy with the cut or not. I'll admit to once or twice taking a drive and trying a more expensive place to see if there really is a difference, but...I just don't see it. Perhaps my hair hides flaws well. (It does. I've taken scissors to it myself more than once with no harm done.) I also don't color, though I've tried it in the past twice. If I colored, maybe I would be shelling it out a little more easily.

Kaliko: There are 2 cities either side of a river where I live. For the whole region, it has a combined population of approximately 100,000. For the most part the good salons would charge $150-280 depending on amount of colour, length of hair, etc. To compare to Melbourne or Sydney, a highend salon cost would depend on who you see ( for example, the senior stylist may be closer to $300-400). Australia does have a very high cost of living though.

And yes, I'm a big fan of a glass of champagne or a cappucino or hot chocolate while getting my hair done. Not to mention a yummy slice or piece of cake! I have almost fallen asleep while getting a full head of foils done.

I live in Baltimore and less than a mile from DC so most places around here charge high prices than not. Before that I lived in Allentown,PA which was more of a rural place but even they charged high prices unless you went to the cheap cut places. Being however that I was only an hour from Philly and an hour and a half from NYC, most women I knew went to one of those two places to get their hair done.

The salon I go to is in Del Mar (San Diego county) which is a very affluent area and attracts extremely wealthy clientele. This salon has also been written up in Elle, Vogue and Cosmo.

My hair is not forgiving. My hair is so thick that I can only get an elastic around my pony tail twice, so it has to be layered or it becomes unbearable. Layering this much hair isn't easy and I've found that less experience/less trained stylists tend to leave big, thick layers that are amazingly obvious. On top of that it's curly and I have a cow lick over my right eyebrow.

The last place I went was more pricey than where I go now, and was in the Sierra Foothills. But it was (is) an Aveda Concept Salon, and that's much of what I was paying for.

Where I go now isn't quite as posh, and is in the general Sacramento area.

The gal I used to see in the foothills is now in an affluent part of the SF Bay Area and charges much more. If I move down there I'd go to her again in a heartbeat.

I pretty much stick to the "cheap" places, but my haircut is very simple...just a pixie style, strictly wash and wear. I spent years fighting my hair, trying to make it do anything else but hang there......and I lost the battle. I do my own color too....I go to Sally's, buy the creme developer and the color for about $11, amd then can continue to color my hair for about $6 once I buy the developer. I prefer the Feria line. Depending on how short my hair is, ie frsh cut vs a longer style, I can actually use half of the color at a time. It's not that diffucult to do at all.

I'm very low maintenance anyway......no makeup, just moisturizer. Pert shampoo, I use Humectress leave in conditioner, and air dry. If I have to get "duded up", it's still pretty simple, a little color on the eyes, and lipstick. I never learned how to do the make-up thing, I was too much of a tomboy to worry about it...when I try the full face thing, I end up feeling like I've got a plaster mask on my face, and can't stand it.
