Well, all this talk made me go get a hair cut - first time in 6 months except for the bang trimming I had 2 months ago. Turned out the last person did my layers wrong, which is why it's felt thin, and I was worried about hair loss due to my anemia, lol.

I got the new girl's name and will stick to her!

Oh, with my coupon it was $11.95, so I saved so much money I can get a one hour massage elsewhere [:D]

i got very spoiled, my aunt used to do my hair. she passed away many yrs ago due to ovarian cancer and i couldn't find anyone i liked to do my hair. throw in a bout with alopecia and i didn't get my hair cut for many years while it grew back much thinner than it had been. i did eventually start cutting it myself and got pretty good results for ten years. i finally broke down and went to a local place and had it professionally cut as i was changing my shoulder length style. i paid 20 bucks including tip and at that i felt it was a little pricy for just a cut. i may go to the local cosmetology school next, they're always looking for heads to do. if i find someone good i may follow them after they graduate. but there's no way i'm spending more than 20 bucks for a simple cut.

I think that if you go to very inexpensive places, that will work fine if you have simple hair that requires a simple, straightforward cut (e.g., all one length, no bangs). Any kind of styling, particularly for more difficult hair, will take more time, and thus be more expensive.

Color, to my mind, is a completely different thing. Coloring is a science - and those who are really good at it tend to come at a premium. I find I can usually tell who is paying more for their color.

But at the end of the day, I think it really matters who, specifically, you are getting your hair done by. I've seen people walking out of expensive salons looking worse than when they came in. And I've known people who charge less for their services because they do not operate out of an expensive salon, who are every bit as good as the best salon. It all depends on who you are with. I've also known men and women who follow their colorists and stylists around (for example, one stylist opened up their own shop - didn't have all the high end perks, but you could get the same great haircut and style for significantly less - and the stylist got to keep all the money instead of having to split it with the salon). I know there are underground salons in the city, also, that cater to aspiring model/actress types who need to look good, but don't always have the budget for expensive salons.

for hair cuts. I am assuming the 28 dollar people are more up to date on new styles and such. But other than they can what makes them worth so much more?

Well, based on my hair....I'd say $3.50 plus a tip ("shave more often") would be valid.

Amen. If you saw me in person, you'd have no clue that this isn't my natural color.

There are a lot of reasons for high numbers in salons. Some have to do with the"fluff" of the place. For instance, wine or champagnes (most salons limit that to two drinks only due to lawsuits), finger foods, kids not screaming, relaxation, etc. Also has to do with the product they use. I use Italy products, they tend to be a bit better for your hair than say matrix. I love Matrix but don't use it. And also the experience of the stylist. Most places like Supercuts or Mastercuts do not charge a lot of cuts because they are what the industry calls "cookie cutter places". They are trying to get you in and out and get the next client in the chair. They work more towards quantity than quality. I charge fifty dollars for a cut. That is the starting price. And color, well..it's a lot. lol.

And I soooo agree with Oside girl. I would rather have steak than hamburger. And since My hair is one of the most beautiful things (I feel) about Me, I will go to no limits to make sure it is taken care of. My hair cuts total about 70 bucks (tip included). Hair is for protection and adornment, why not splurge and show it you love it? lol.

Ok, I'm with you on color. My gf got her hair colored in an expensive place in Miami and I could see the difference between Clairol. Her hair also didn't get roughlike straw like the hair of friends of mine who use cheap color regularly.

ShaharThorne -> RE: So what makes some hair cutting places worth charging 28 or more dollars while some charge 8 bucks (4/5/2012 6:36:44 AM)

I usually pay $12 for my haircut at what used to be a Procuts (new owner, new name). I try to keep it short because it is so thick and gets tangled easily. I color my own hair (need to do that this weekend) which Mom helps me out on that.

TFB, nice bob!

Color is a science, when you go to school for cosmetology, that is one of the hardest classes. There are so many things you have to know about it. It's like being a chemist, and an inventor at the same time. That's My favorite part though, color.

It's so funny, I used to get accused of dying my hair when i didn't. Now that I do, no one believes I do. I am picky and I am VERY happy with the results from a $8 box.

I personally pay around $75 for a good haircut and that's just a cut and nothing more. When I get it highlighted it usually costs me around $200 to $275. For me, I like to know I look good once it's done. I want to know that where I go has reputable certifications, years upon years of experience and is highly respected. I also go to get waxes and pedicures every 2 weeks and I'm super, super, picky about those. Master thinks I'm crazy because I keep complaining that I have hated every single person I've gone to in Baltimore so far. He doesn't understand the differences but I notice them. I notice the stray hair they missed, the fact that when I get home I have to fix the pedi they messed up on, etc....

Then again I don't eat at McDonalds either. If I want a good food I'm going to pay more for it and it will be worth every penny.

Unfortunately I'm still trying to find a place in Baltimore that I like. Sigh. It's so hard to find another good one when you move.

Wow! I guess if I had a really well-paying job I'd get all that stuff done too, or at least get a pedicure now and then and go to a salon not called "____ Cuts", lol. But $200 is my entire monthly "fun money", so a $30 haircut, DIY eyebrow waxing kit and a bath salts foot soak at home will have to do me.

Hahaha, I know what you mean. I used to dye my hair with the box dyes, and once I stopped and let it all grow out, people started asking me if/how I dye my hair! I guess it's that I have thick silver streaks on dark hair, and since I'm still in my 20s people think I must be trying to look like Rogue from the X-men and not, you know, prematurely going gray. [:D] But the Dom prefers it that way, and I get a lot of compliments on it, and it's a hell of a lot less bother and mess, so it's staying.

I don't have a well paying job either. I just find that I would rather spend my fun money on me instead of other stuff that I really don't need and most of the other stuff I enjoy is free...reading, hiking, biking, going for a walk in the park, lying around with Master doing nothing, watching a movie on tv, etc....

Ah, ok. I like going out to eat sometimes, having a smart phone w/ data plan, Netflix, new clothes and books, etc so that all cuts into it.

tj444 -> RE: So what makes some hair cutting places worth charging 28 or more dollars while some charge 8 bucks (4/17/2012 6:19:45 AM)

I have very fine hair and i learned long ago to KISS.. which is why i have the simplest hair cut possible.. long with bangs.. any fool can cut it.. I have cut it myself also.. it takes all of 2 minutes to do.. so for cutting my hair i go to the cheapest place i can.. cut it straight across the bottom and trim my bangs please.. [:)]

Now, coloring my hair is an entirely different story.. its very fine so i need someone that knows wtf they are doing with hair color on delicate hair.. I had a colorist in Vancouver that did a fantastic job on my hair and it wasnt cheap.. I tried my hair darker and then I took it lighter with her and it looked great.. and it made me feel great too.. I cant remember the exact cost, probably about $200 or so.. doing that every 3 months or so.. But if i want to color my hair thats what i have to do.. going cheap just means someone screws my hair up so bad it breaks off at the roots.. (awkkkk!) and anytime i was foolish enough to try box color.. it always, always, always went red on me.. and I hate red on me.. I havent colored my hair since Vancouver cuz i need to find someone with experience/knowledge that i can trust enough first.. maybe when i get back to SoCal I will hunt around and try to find someone..

I agree with everyone else, your hair cut looks great on you..
