A Taser is the defense weapon that shoots prongs and has wires. If you miss, your only option is to use it as a direct contact stun gun.....which means you have to be touching distance to your target. Stun guns and Tasers are battery powered, which means if your batteries are dead, you're defenseless. Based on body size, physical condition and drug use, stun guns and Tasers are sometimes ineffective. You're only going to get one chance to get someone with a stun gun, after that you've lost the element of surprise, so you better hope there's only one intruder. And lastly, how are you going to practice using that weapon?

I've carried pepper spray in the past, when I took the train to work. A lot of the same issues apply, you have to be within a few feet of your target, you lose the element of surprise after the first one, and it's not effective on some people. I'll also add that even in an outdoor setting, you're going to end up getting some of that pepper spray yourself.

With a handgun, I know I can hit a target up to 10 yards away. I don't have to be within arms reach to defend myself.

sure,.. there are pros and cons to anything.. tasers are not something I have even had a chance to research at this point.. but i have also not researched gun laws etc either.. that really depends on where you live and the various requirements.. and too.. a person could have both or a variety of weapons.. a safe room too wouldnt hurt.. or finding a place like the Turks & Caicos where dangerous attacks are uncommon..

One big problem with all possibilities tho is that you can't choose where and when you are attacked..

True, but you can train for it.

True, but you can train for it.

sure.. I am fairly cautious and dont take more risk than I need to but for me at this time, its not a high priority.. maybe one day i will do that or maybe not ever.. I just feel there are other things in life i need to do.. I do understand where you are coming from and your goals, your reasons for training and getting a gun.. perhaps if i was in the same place as you I would do the very same things.. or as some that live in the country and need to protect animals, etc and so have guns/rifles.. my comments are about me at this time and in no way a comment on your personal decisions, btw..

I got 100% on my hand gun test....

That's brilliant, I guess that means you are 100% certain never to have an accident with your handgun and that you are 100% sure that you will never accidentally shoot anyone who doesn't 100% deserve to be shot and you are 100% sure that a child will never get hold of your gun and shoot someone. Also I suspect you are 100% certain that your own gun won't get used against you.
I fucking love that 100% certainty thing, makes life so easy.

Are you 100% certain you'll never have an accident with your car? Are you 100% certain you'll never accidentally hit someone with your car? Are you 100% sure that a child will never use your car? Are you 100% certain that you won't have your car stolen and used in crime?

Don't like guns, don't get one. Your snark was rude and unnecessary.

Late to the party but yep. Jesus Christ. So unnecessary. Anyway congrats!!! I spent all last weekend at the range with my .357 (love) and the man's .45 Ruger (hate) practicing! Hells to the yeah! Good for you!

couple of points

If you're breaking into my home, you deserve to be shot.

we will have to agree to differ on this one, I reckon the vast majority of burglars are after stuff, likes phones, jewelry cash etc, they are not there to kill you. Most burglars will run a mile as soon as they think there is someone in the house or that they have woken the householders up. You are only really in any danger if you go to confront the perp but you yanks have this idea that it's worth killing someone and it's worth putting your own life at risk to protect a few bucks and a mobile phone.
secondly

We have two gun safes and we use them.

everyone on CM says how careful they are, even keeping the rounds and the guns in seperate places, it's all locked up, nice and safe. How the fuck is that gonna help when you wander into the kitchen and find a guy stealing shit? Are you going to politely ask him to hang around for a couple of minutes while you rummage around looking for keys and unlocking gun cabinets and safes?

I don't say that. I have a .357 sitting right here about a foot away from me and he has on his a Ruger .45 loaded safety off. In the kitchen we have a few more and there is another one in my truck loaded as well. So I am quite fucking sure there will be no fumbling when an intruder breaks in. I have pulled mine twice and one of those times I am absolutely certain it prevented a major incident from occurring.

There is stupid. There is goddamned fucking stupid. Then there is the mystery of how a man manages to operate a typewriter while demonstrating such amazing stupidity. Where on the scale falls the suggestion that we have to agree to differ on whether you get to break into my house?

ETA : Gas tank explodes, causing man to dislodge props, pickup, which is grounded, pins man on top of lit stinger.

The good news is, it'll all be over in, ...well, it depends on how much gas is in the tank.

you use the word stupid a lot, much like you use the word respect a lot in your profile.
I remember some guy once telling me over and over that I could trust him, I didn't.
Who uses a typewriter these days bud?

If they're the only ones invited into the house, absolutely safe.

You're starting to sound like a Southern Baptist preacher that freaks out when a grocery store decides to sell beer because they're afraid that beer will magically levitate off the shelf, open itself and force itself down some good Christian's throat.

Yup. My view is that if you don't like guns, don't get one. His view is that because he doesn't like guns, no one should get one.

Gosh, let's all be careful not to call a spade a spade, but if you will look beneath your fingertips, what do you find, ...a typewriter.

Hardy, do us both a favor. Wise up.

I owned a Makarov for several years. It reliably ate any ammunition I fed it, and was reasonably accurate. It's not a target pistol, so don't expect miracles from it. The stiff slide is no worse than any other blowback 9mm; you'll get used to it.

Good job. D: I have a feeling once Master and I get our first actual home, I am going to have to take a test of sorts. I hate guns, but...lol

Yeah, it's primary use will be my defense, although I know I'm going to have to practice, practice, practice with it.

It's funny. They gave me a choice of the two they had in stock. The first had a soft slide, but the safety was so stiff that it took two hands. The second, the safety was perfect and the slide was stiff. I took the stiff slide.

I've chosen a set of Pearce rubber grips and Master says after I've put a few hundred rounds through it we'll talk about changing the spring and possibly have some trigger work done.

lol..thanks Hill. Exactly. Normal and safe? I guess. I grew up that way. No kids in this house ever, I mean never, just the two of us, 2 consenting adults that have years of gun experience. I seriously don't think much of it, it's just a tool like any other, to be used as needed and however needed.
