I heard about the documentary in question a few years back, there were a lot of accusations of bias.

From where, http://www.nationalcatholicreporter.org? In related news according to Scientology anyone who has concerns about scientology doesn't actually have valid concerns about scientology, they're just lashing out because they're a pedophile. [8|]

When we talk of abortion opponents I think it is important to remember they include domestic terrorists responsible for the largest number of individual acts of terror in this country. That communitty aided and abetted Eric Rudolph and was the reason a terriorst and a murderer was on the loose for 2 yrs. The idse they are pro life is contradicted by the terrorists and murders spawned by their zealtry. If they got there wish and planned parenthood was defunded they would be resposible for the death of thousands through the act of takingaway all the prevention services. Zealots are dangerous. They cut funding all that will change is the other services that save lives abortion is a fee based service. Right wing group think is anti abortion and anti child. When they start supporting healthcare efforts for children and nutrional support where needed for kids I'll believe they are pro life not pro life pre living

No that article pre-dates the programme. The guy who did the programme is well known in my part of the world as he used his status gained from campaigning against child abuse to lead in campaigning for all sorts of other issues, which in part led to the documentary getting a huge amount of coverage, causing a fair bit of controversy at the time. I don't know if the Scientology point is to suggest I don't like any criticism of Catholicism but if it is then its wrong because I've criticised the institution a great deal in the past, and a bit on here as well including on this thread. Its tempting to blast them all as I have also done in the past but I think criticism should be commensurate as there are well meaning people in the Church too.

I'm pointing out that calling a BBC documentary biased while citing the nationalcatholicreporter is a joke.

Fwiw, the National Catholic Reporter is independent of the church and tends to lean left. In 1968, the local bishop officially condemned NCR for its for its "disregard and denial of the most sacred values of our Catholic faith." The paper continues to draw conservative criticism today.

The NCR website includes an Accountability section with a fair amount of coverage of the sexual-abuse crisis.

I didn't say the BBC documentary was biased. I said some criticised it as biased. I can't say personally as I didn't see it. The article is of course from an interested source but the points, such as the stuff about the text broadly referring to abuse of the confessional rather than child sex abuse, can be found from other sources too.

As I tried to explain to Kirata for quite a while before giving up, snark doesn't actually constitute a valid rebuttal.

Given the sorts of claims often made by certain parties, it has always seemed to me a much better than deserved response in most cases.

Being officially condemned doesn't show that they are any more unbiased than nuns.

Just look at their mission statement, they very clearly have an angle:

Mission Statement:
NCR provides lay-led independent reporting and commentary serving the People of God as they work to renew the life of the Church and prepare the way for the Reign of God.

Fair enough. But I honestly wasn't sure if you, or folks reading you, were taking NCR as a mouthpiece of the Catholic hierarchy, which it is not.

Is it a sock puppet for the Pope no, is it a publication completely biased in favor of Catholicism yes.

Hmm. I'm not sure if I'm sold on that, since it would imply that their coverage was factually unreliable, and I haven't read enough to know if that's true.
