What's ironic, is that we hold movie stars up as role model and idols. Movie stars. People who are paid to pretend to be other people. People who are paid to not be who they are. I find that odd.

Do we?
I get the impression that we more take a prurient interest in their private lives, which is a very different thing.

Fast reply

And all this started because your parents didn't wash your
mouths out with soap when you said a bad word.

As we are now all adults why do you think it persists?

It pays to do dumb shit. It also pays to do other people wrong. A guy is banging his neighbors wife as well as his daughter, and he'll get lots of attention. Used to be he would shamed and ridiculed.
You do something dumb and hurt yourself , as dumb fuck are drawn to do. And they'll give you lots of money for your dumb acts.
Doing the right thing and being smart doesn't pay. People these days want attention. They think they are somebody important.

I think you have something there, but your analysis may be off. We pay attention to the celeb's because we fantasize about living that lifestyle (or being their mate), and revel in their falls because it shows they are not perfect. We revel in the baser parts of society in a perversely glorifying way, not explicitly to glorify the behavior, but because it placates us since "at least we're not like them."

sex symbols yes role models hell no. ,That life style of being under a maginfying glass 24/7 and the poparazzi harrassment results in some of the most dysfunctionasl disturbed human beings on the palnet. Now in cases where they arent nuts they do sometimes make a difference and sometimes even the nutters do. Angelina Jole for instance but I doubt anyone considers here a role model

People magazine isn't all about their sex lives. These rags have everything to do with everything a celeb does. It's not just their sex lives. It's their lives all together.

While you and I can see that the attention placed on celeb's is not due to their wonderful character. Are they idolized? Most definitely.

Why were Paris Hilton and Nicole Ricci popular at all? While it's true they were sexually active and made no bones about it, did they have any benefit for society? No way. They were rich. They were sexually active. They played to their strengths. Snooki? Yeah. Right.

They make us feel better because, at least we aren't as depraved and vacuous as them.

Is this just the circus portion of "Bread and Circuses"?

Uh, yes.

I'm not sure we've evolved as a species that much. Popular culture is exactly what it states. That which appeals to the most number of people. Is it any surprise that throughout time this translates into fare that appeals to the lowest common denominator?

I have this argument a lot with people. That just because something is "popular" or even a person is "popular" does not actually say anything about whether that what or who is actually "artistic", "uplifting", "intelligent", "humorous", etc., etc.

I believe even in Roman times it was well documented that many of the upper class found the Roman circuses not entertaining, but simply a useful tool to keep the plebeians entertained. I don't think too many upper class Romans are on record as saying the Roman circuses were "edifying".

There is some of that. But some of us do use them as the example to follow. Some of it being that we as a rich society( rich in the sense of our total weath as a country and the fact that few of us truly have to contend with survival) we want to be entertained. The bonds of community have lessened. And with it our civility towards each other.
