Even if Baxter helped organize a recent Occupy event, 4 of the 5 seem to not have a connection to the Occupy movements.

No, sweetie. 4 of 5 of them DID have a connection to the Occupy Cleveland Movement.

quote:

Are we now going to say that anyone who did anything for any Occupy movement anywhere, that if they commit any crime elsewhere that somehow the Occupy movements are responsible??

Depends on what their crime is, I suppose. Like most things. A DUI would not be. A rape of another occupiest would be. As well as damage to financial structures.

quote:

Again I don't quite understand the logic of one of them was at Occupy, therefore this bombing attempt is related to the Occupy movements. This logic just doesn't hold.

Because they planned it at an Occupy event.

quote:

I understand the ANARCHY part. But the attempt to try to connect this to the Occupy movement (i.e., that this is a planned part of the Occupy movement) is simply not holding water.

Planned. At. Occupy. Event. Oct. 21, 2011.

quote:

Just because Baxter might have been involved in both still doesn't say anything about this incident as an Occupy movement initiative.

Yeah.

Wright, 26, who reportedly confided details of his group’s planned attacks “against corporate America and the financial system,” according to court filings…

"destroying a bridge would cause great financial harm."

Wright and Baxter also discussed trying to blow up the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland, as well as attacking a new casino in the city, a NATO summit in Chicago and the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, according to the complaint.

Nothing to do with OWS. What was I thinking?

quote:

It still seems to me that we are talking about a group of 5 anarchists who tried to bomb a bridge....

On the same day that a couple of cities were trashed and some fake anthrax sent. It is ALL coincidence, I suppose.

But please, continue to downplay the actions of the occupy groups in this domestic terrorism.

Seriously, MSLA, have you ever stopped to consider that you might be doing more harm than good to your own side's argument? A lot of righties involved in this discussion are at pains to be, or at least to appear to be, balanced here. It's a bit embarrassing, that's all I'm saying.

This thread, like so many before and countless more to come, I suspect, turns on the question of whether a few nut jobs--anarchists who dream of blowing up bridges or a preacher who advocates beating LGBT youth, to take two current examples--represent an entire movement.

The answer seems to depend on how one views said movement and whether one seeks handy examples for discrediting it.

I'm not your sweetie. No need for the condescension. Only people incapable of actual argument resort to that kind of ridiculousness.

You have still not shown despite your very long post that the OCCUPY MOVEMENT planned the attack on this bridge. You have only shown that one person who was affiliated with an Occupy gathering conspired with 4 other ANARCHISTS to attack a bridge on the same day as Occupy Movement planned other incidents. Unlike the incidents that occurred in some other places (that were, in fact, part of Occupy) this was NOT.

I guess if they planned it at Baxter's grandmother's you would somehow be trying to implicate grandma, too. For heaven's sakes.

These were 5 anarchists who made a plan that was not part of any Occupy movement.

And I'm not even going to touch your comment that the Occupy movement would be responsible for an occupied protestor being raped by another occupied protester. Seriously? So ALL men are responsible for any rape that occurs anywhere by any man? So ALL white Christians are responsible for what Hitler did in Germany? Seriously? I really think you need to consider the logic of the argument that you are making. The notion that someone belonging to an identifiable group makes that entire identifiable group LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE for what the individual did is so weak as to be laughable. Btw, 5 anarchists doing this does not make all anarchists around the world responsible for this either.

Just as I would never condemn all Christians for what one preacher said, I don't think 5 anarchists represent the Occupy movement. I'm sorry, but this post's title of "fun loving Occupy bridge bombers" is simply inaccurate.

I dunno ... you were probably ruling out a fascination with Ron Paul too soon.
Either way, admitting you were mistaken is a good first step back and we're all proud of you.

Melissa from Occupy Cleveland provides these interesting facts:

Umm about the 5 arrested they are described as anarchists and oh here just read this psst they weren't part of Occupy afterall, even the FBI confirms this ;) : "The case began to develop when the FBI learned that some self-described anarchists planned to attend an October 21, 2011, Occupy Cleveland protest, according to court documents and members of the organization.
An FBI informant saw four of the men going through the crowd expressing displeasure at demonstrators' unwillingness to engage in violent acts. The men wore masks and carried walkie-talkies, according to the FBI affidavit filed with the court.
Authorities have kept a close eye on the Occupy protests across the country that have sought to draw attention to economic inequities in the United States. Civil liberties groups have argued the surveillance violated constitutional rights to free speech.
ALLEGED PLOTTERS LINKED TO OCCUPY MOVEMENT
The Occupy Cleveland group acknowledged in a statement posted on Facebook that the men arrested were associated with the movement. "They were in no way representing or acting on behalf of Occupy Cleveland," the organization said, adding the group was committed to non-violent protest.
"These were self-described anarchists who formed their own group," said one U.S. law enforcement official. "During the investigation, several of them repeatedly complained that the Occupy movement was too peaceful and would not endorse their violent activities."
Over the next several months, the five men considered a variety of targets for attacks, including this month's Group of 8 leaders' meeting, originally scheduled for Chicago, and this summer's Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, according to the FBI affidavit." ...

Then there's the smoking gun profile on the helpful citizen who actually organized this mess....

Mainstream Christians generally dismiss the end-timer cultists. Similarly, Occupy activists have dismissed these 'bridge bombers'.

So, what's the difference? Why should we accept the words of one bunch of mainstreamers who distance themselves from 'nasties who aren't part of us, despite what they say', but not the other?

The Davidians were a horrible example to compare with the attempted bridge bombers, to begin with Peon. You're at apples and oranges. They didn't go out and start the fight. The feds brought the fight to them, and fucked it up horribly and tragically. Waco never needed to happen.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough in what I said. Cultists like the Branch Davidians get dismissed by mainstream Christianity and Christians to begin with. They don't get invited to the Interfaith prayer breakfast, or the pastors luncheon. Their kids weren't all enrolled together at the non-denominational Christian school. The would-be bombers appear, from our resident Occupist poster no less, to have been a part of the Occupy community.
