Sinergy,
Thank you for the clarification on the gatorade. I've asked that question a few times. Gotten no answer. I started to feel like the ugly stepchild nobody hears...hehe.
I realize you were not replying to my direct question but never the less you answered why I am always thirsty when I drink gatorade.

Which would mean, the mere fact I am thirsty means I am already dehydrated. Then I drink some sugary substance and it makes me thirstier?

My soon to be father in law is the president of the energizing c company. Alacer.com. Or he was until his recent illness. I'll start trying that when I work out hard.

ModeratorOne -> RE: Atkins diet (6/22/2004 9:07:28 PM)

If you want you can always make ghetto gatorade. Not sure if I mentioned this already. Its been a while since I looked at this thread and didnt feel like reading back but...

The electrolytes are: Sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium, chloride, phosphate, sulfate, and bicarbonate. Sweat contains sodium, chloride and potassium, so those are the ones that heavy sweaters have to replace. Of course water must also be replaced.

Take a 2 liter bottle of water
1 packet of koolaid any flavor unsweetened
I use liquid sucralose as a sweetner*
0.75 tsp morton lite

This will give you 103 mg sodium and 121 mg potassium per 8 ounces.

If you want, you could add 1/2 tsp of baking soda to replace any lost bicarbonate. For more sodium and less potassium, use 1/2 regular salt and 1/2 Lite salt

Liquid sucralose aka liquid splenda can be purchased at www.sweetzfree.com Its kinda pricey but a little goes a LONG way! I can use less than a tsp of the stuff to sweeten an entire cheesecake and it doesnt have the maltodextrin or dextrose filler that the granular sweetner uses.

sub4hire -> RE: Atkins diet (6/23/2004 2:59:11 PM)

Is the liquid sucrose like stevea? I'd really prefer water. Anything sweet makes me more thirsty.
My Dom keeps telling me to drink a half of a gallon of water before working out. Usually I can get about 50 ounces down..but not the whole 64 without gushing and having a sick feeling when I work out.
Now, once working out thats a whole other story. I can drink the water like a camel would.
I know there is smart water out there. But it has that bad aftertaste.

Am I too picky?

Estring -> RE: Atkins diet (6/23/2004 4:22:33 PM)

A half gallon of water is alot to drink at any time. And you are right, those smart waters taste like crap.

Im idly wondering how many PETA people are followers of the Atkins diet.

I prefer stevia to sucralose when I drink my Yerba Mate. Thats about it. Stevia has this licorice bitter flavor to it and its difficult to get the quantities right.

True, something sweet might make you more thirsty, but this isnt like coke sweet. This is more to make the flavor more paltable since you want to get your electrolytes in.

Liquid sucralose is liquid splenda. Its splenda with no maltodextrin filler in a concentrated liquid. The commercial stuff they use in diet drinks.

Honestly, I wouldnt reccomend drinking that much right before a workout. I drink very little while working out too, and drink a lot right after.

I found that when I drink too much before or during a workout it will actually slow me down and sometimes cause me to have stomach cramps. I go through about 2 liters at the gym. Usually its water or cold mate. Sometimes I make the ghetto gatorade if I am spending more than 2 hours at the gym and I think I will need it.

Smart water has sucrose syrup in it I think (one of those vitamin water things do anyway)

If you are gonna drink one of those, I still suggest making your own and that way can modify the flavor and no need to get all that sugar.

iwillserveu -> RE: Atkins diet (6/28/2004 6:51:49 PM)

I was going between rooms, but I think the radio had an ad for carb free bottled water.

sub4hire -> RE: Atkins diet (6/28/2004 8:36:09 PM)

Let's say I am making kool-aid. How much liquid splenda do I use for 2 quarts?
I know that sounds like an obvious question but whenever I've tried the liquid fake sweeteners I've had problems mixing them right.

I make ice tea now. Rip open 14 packets of splenda for 3 quarts. The stuff that is supposed to measure like sugar just is'nt the same to me.

I'm going to try...leave out the sugar in any form. Even gatorade and I don't believe it has much sugar in it...it leaves me thirsty. So leaving out the sugar.

"If you want, you could add 1/2 tsp of baking soda to replace any lost bicarbonate. For more sodium and less potassium, use 1/2 regular salt and 1/2 Lite salt "

Not sure what baking soda water tastes like...but I'll let you know.

The little packets of splenda don't measure like sugar, they are more concentrated. The pourable boxes of splenda have a filler so they measure like sugar and are better for cooking. I didn't know there is a liquid splenda too.

ModeratorOne -> RE: Atkins diet (6/29/2004 3:37:03 AM)

The granular splenda measures like sugar.

Every tsp of splenda is half a carb leaving you with 24 carbs per cup of splenda due to the maltodextrin used to bulk it

The packets have the sweetness of 2 tsp and each packet has 1 carb. I think its a dextrose maltodextrin combo.

Liquid splenda has no carbs since there is no bulking agent used. Its highly concentrated.

I use a dropper and 1/4 of a tsp to fill a gallon of koolaid.

Using liquid splenda will take a while to learn how to get the quantities right, but I personally love it.

For a counter point I'd like to mention the Real Men of Genius Bud Light radio ad. The one where the guy wonders if the apricot he had was 13.6 carbs or 13.5 as he opens another pack of bacon.

A calorie is a calorie is a calorie. (OK, it is really a kilocalorie, but ...[:)])

ModeratorOne -> RE: Atkins diet (7/11/2004 8:01:38 AM)

an apricot is 3 or 4 carbs.

I didnt hear the commercial and a calorie is not a calorie.

Studies have shown that you can eat more calories, lose more weight and have an improved lipid profile on a lower carb diet.
Also the way certain foods are metabolized in your body has an impact, not to mention hormones such as insulin, leptin, ghrelin and many others. Also, keep in mind fat and protein are far more satiating than carbs and you will feel satisfied for longer on less food. No more insulin surges and carb sleepyness either.

I can say for myself that a diet high in whole grains and complex carbs was horrible for me. Monitored I was at 1600 calories a day all the way down to around 800 calories a day tested over a period of 6 months and even at 800 calories a day on a diet high in complex carbs, I am talking quinoa, splet, kamut, etc. not twinkies and oreos here and I gained weight. At over 2500 calories a day on a low carb diet I lost weight.

I also became highly insulin resistant due to the amount of grains I was eating in my diet, my triglycerides were out of control, I was hypoglycemic and had some other health issues that all went away within the first 8 months of my low carbing.

I am not saying low carbing is right for everyone. I do think it would benefit all people to avoid things like white flour, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils and highly processed junk foods but to each their own.

Garry Larson was a genius. I remember so many of his Far Side cartoons. Such a twisted and hilarious mind he had.

dixiedumpling -> RE: Atkins diet (7/11/2004 3:26:39 PM)

iwill is a genius for thinking up posts that won't die.

i thought PETA stood for People Eating Tasty Animals. i'm a member of that group.

i've never tried Adkins. i've done Weight Watchers and it worked for me. However, i wasn't cured of wanting to eat volume so i skimped on the protein and filled up on carbs which have fewer calories per gram. The result is that my hair fell out. And i don't mean just a little of it. About 40% of it fell out. The dermatologist said it was the shock of losing weight and likened it to a woman giving birth and her hair falling out. Then i read in Prevention magazine about how low protein diets will cause hair loss.

Right now, i'm losing weight, but i'm following my own plan. i eat some protein every day. But i don't feel like i'm in a race or a competition as i did with Weight Watchers. Since the first Monday of last November, i've lost 63 pounds. i'm going slow and i hardly ever weigh. i usually wait for a doctor's appointment so i can be surprised right along with them.

i'm still overweight, but i'm more satisfied with how i look now. And i don't get out of breath screaming at the dogs to "get down!"

Protein and carbs both have 4 calories per gram.

I highly recommend picking up Protein Power http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0553574752/qid=1089643150/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/104-2925121-5063906?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

and Protein Power Lifeplan http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0446678678/qid=1089643150/sr=8-3/ref=pd_ka_3/104-2925121-5063906?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

Not to start on the Protein power plan, but the books are very technical in nature and it discusses issues of hair loss as well as many others and their relation to protein or other types of nutritional deficiencies. The first book is older and discusses weight loss a bit more, in the second book they discuss more studies, macronutrients and shifted from the weight loss umbrella to a Plan for Life and optimal health, more than just weight loss. I highly recommend both of them. I don't recommend reading the second without the first.

Even though they are pretty technical, it isn't a difficult read for the average person to understand. I really like the Eades a lot in case you cant tell lol.

"Proteins and carbs both have 4 calories per gram".
Ya know, i thought about that little misstep later. i was thinking about how most animal based proteins come with a dose of fat included making them calorie dense choices unlike salad dressed with rice vinegar. When i did WW, i ate a lot of salad and preferred to use up my points with fruits and veggies and high fiber bread. i could probably be a vegetarian w/o missing the taste of meat.
