Here's where I think you're getting confused tftb; dogs are not people. You seem to relate a dog to a person and that's just not how it works. Yeah all dogs have different personalities but there are certain things dogs are bred for and that's what they should be doing. You say this dog won't retrieve, won't play. Have you asked yourself why? You need to teach it to do so and it will also need the exercise. These dogs are not just the type of dog you need to take for a walk around the corner and then put back in the house all day.

I'm hoping this training class you say you are taking will teach you more about dogs because honestly, you don't seem the type right now that can care for a dog. Plus you don't seem like the type that can show a dog that you are an alpha.

Have you ever thought about getting a cat instead?

I don't like cats much. Other people's cats are fine to say hi to and pet and make pur and stuff, but as a personal pet, they just don't appeal to me.

And my dad probably wouldn't allow one , he hates them and thinks they're worthless flea bags.

How do you teach a 9 year old to play, if they were not taught or shown or have liked to before? I assume she's not ball or fetch interested because her previous people did not do that with her or introduce her to the concept. A lot of dogs come into the rescue not knowing how to play. or caring to play because it is a foreign concept. Some are just to old and don't have that giddy up and go play ability any more.

She seems pretty content at 9 to laze about with me. The profile on her at the rescue the dog evaluation and experience on her said she was not a go getter, and instead preferred to be a couch potato and a lay about at home.

i took Calley for a walk an sprayed her in the face and gave a loud NO every time she lunged at the doggies n she stopped! we had to wash rinse and repeat a few times but by George i think she's got it. We'll try a short walk again tomorrow and see if the lesson took or it was just for the one time. She gets praised mightily when she walks past the doggies quietly. I had my dad come along in case she didn't calm down after the sharp no and spritz, so she wouldn't possibly pull me down.

Great, keep it up please, and shesh more than one walk's worth.

As for the playing, you may need to be very patient.

I'll walk her every day when i take my walk if I have made her stop her nonsense with nearly pulling me down and lunging any time a dog barks from behind its fence. When i say or it's just a one time, some dogs display the behavior you want after one correction, like when i told her to stay out of our kitchen, i never had to tell her to many times again, and some it takes 4 or 5 applications to sink in, and maybe more. She's a fast learning, she only needs told a few times in one day and then she, depending on what it is, doesn't do it again. The lesson seems to have sunk in she barked a few times, and a few times started to wind up in a rawer rawer rawer in her throat but stopped and looked at me and whined, i praised her for her good walking!

As a rule of thumb, about 3 times as long to correct bad behaviour as she has previously gotten away with it, so don't give up and let your guard slip after a few times. Also have very clear rules of conduct in the house, you initiate when she gets petted and she's on the floor or her dog bed, not next to you.

LadyConstanze She's an incredibly fast learner i only have to tell her twice some lessons.

This lesson only took 4 face sprays in one walk and she seems to have learned it.

I hope you're right but I wouldn't rely on it, dogs are creatures of habit and she had that habit for a long long time... Right now it's the novelty of the spray bottle, you want to be sure you can trust her all the time, if she's a fast learner she's also clever, which means she'll be testing you a lot. Think about it like learning maths, if you have trouble adding 2 numbers, chances are that you won't be great at crunching numbers because you are missing the basics. With dogs simple obedience is what for a kid basic math would be, you need a good foundation on which you can build

Dog aggression will not be cured that fast. It is more likely to take months to years of consistent work.

As to teaching a dog to play, do you know dog body language for "I want to play?" A dog that wants to play will crouch with its forelegs while keeping its rear end up and wagging its tail. So go out in the yard when you have the time and use a light tone of voice and show it a lot of affection. When it shows you the right body language throw the ball/rope/toy and watch the retriever go get it.

Chris, where do you keep getting these inappropriate dogs? If she is other dog aggressive that dog needs an experienced handler.

This 10000000 percent.

We taught her to stay out of the kitchen with just two corrections in one sitting, now she stays out of it all the time , with exception to the rare instance. Which is to be expected sometimes.

I'm not going to think yay you're behaving yourself i don't need to correct you any more, or take it for granted that she behaved on one walk, we're still going to work on re enforcing the good behavior and the proper way to walk past dogs who're going nuts barking an running the fence.

The underlying aggression won't no, but she now seems to know that i won't put up with her acting on her dislike of the barking dogs on the other side of the fence. We'll see she'll go with me everyday when i go for my 40 house walk, and we'll still sign up for the basic obedience class. It's good stuff to know.

yes i have seen dogs when they wanna play do a play bow and then wag like mad, and then they sometimes bounce up and down a lil on their front feet.

Tfb, I was taking care of a dog whose family jad a house fire.
The house was being rebult and they couldn't take her with them where they were staying.

She was cat aggressive (something I was not aware of when I agreed to take her).
I had 3 cats.

She could be food aggressive.
However, I was Alpha to her and she was never food aggressive with me and the rare time she got in the house without me she would start to go after a cat and I would firmly say No! (plus her name) and she would stop her pursuit.

Being her Alpha means being her Alpha all the time.
You have a very smart dog there.

The dog I was taking care of didn't much like to play either but she did like her toys for no other reason than she understood that they were hers.

Thank you, yes she's a smart girl and also has a high desire to please her people.

Yes, some dogs do like toys just cause they understand it's theirs, and not to play with.

Ginger would play, but not really with balls, she liked tug a war games, and she liked to cuddle my toys, because it was something i showed love and concern for.
