Because if they had reduced it to zero the slave holding states would not have joined the union. It was a compromise.

The Senate with equal respresentation for each state kept the small states from being overrun legislatively. The house , with represintation based on population clearly fafored the large states. The electorial collge was to force presidential candidates to take needs of small states into account. I would say this is like talking to a brick wall, but the wall would be smarter.

I would say that you could spell representation correctly, then your aspersions might cast.

I know how that works, the bicameral legislature with the reps and the sens....works that way today, gerrymandering and all.   But, the 3/5ths was used to boost the representation in the south and to keep it slave.

Why you are going thru grade school pedantics over something that is not at issue is  banging your head against a wall, but not talking to it.

Yes and still 3 presendents won by the Electoral College and not the popular vote.  Hayes lost the popular vote by some 250,000 votes, Benjamin Harris lost the popular vote by some 90,000 and George W. Bush lost the popular votes by some 540,000 votes.

No the 3/5ths was, from the anti slave factions view, an attemt to limit the representation of slaveholders. Keep in mind that the slave holders wanted 100% representation for slaves. It is a half empty half full thing. Keep in mind that of the original 13 states 6 still had slavery so pushing for 0% would have stoped the process before it got off the ground.

Really????
Just how does that work?
The small states have fewer electoral votes than the large states,just like they have fewer repesentatives.
If you go back and look at the constitution the electoral college was appointed by the state legislatures thus removing the appointing of the president and vice president from the general population.

Congradulations vincentML you got it exactly right, the 3/5s clause was to reduce the power of the slaveholders!!!!


The rule is one vote per each citizen. The south wanted to have representation for their chattel also. So by allowing them to have their chattel be counted their power was increased not reduced.
